Disappointing book, in its lack of depth. It starts well, with an excellent review of Norway's history, background, customs, and travel tips/recommendations.But I found the title to be misleading -- unless by "Norway", you are only interested in the area defined by Oslo, Bergen, Lillehammer. Apparently there's little see farther north. Not a word regarding Trondheim, for example. I had expected more, based on other ratings.The author's use of the word "Snapshot" should be taken literally... :(

This guide seems geared towards older tourists who are most interested in driving everywhere, eating good meals, and sleeping comfortably at night. Does not appear to be useful for active, athletic and adventurous types who want to explore the beautiful outdoors off the beaten path. Furthermore, it contains nothing at all about the northern cities of Trondheim and Tromsø, and the “land of the midnight sun.” It’s hard for me to understand how a guide book could completely leave out one half of a country, as if it had nothing to offer. Quite disappointing, since I ordered this for a family member who is headed to Tromsø in just a few weeks.

Just what I needed, information on Oslo, Bergen, and the Norway-in-a-Nutshell fjord tours. Small enough I can take it with me. It's a couple years old (2015) so I've looked for updated info online both at his site (.../europe/norway/guidebook-updates) and some other basic transit info at links he provides. Rick comes through again.

Good overview of Norway, especially Oslo. Coverage of the rest of the country is hit & miss. Coastal areas and fjords are better represented than is the center of Norway. I would rather have had more detail and, on reflection, should have purchased the more thorough book. But this one did help me use the trains to areas I've never before been to, and enjoy a tremendously beautiful country.

I purchased this book because I planned on spending a day in Oslo during a trip to Northern Europe. I didn't have a chance to do any research before my trip and I ordered this book thinking it would be better than nothing. This book was a great guide. I felt that it guided me toward the important sights in Oslo and I found the information that it gave to be very helpful. There were free tours where he said there would be, the hours of operation of certain places were all correct, and I was able to read a good deal about some of the sites that I visited in this book. I highly recommend this book if you are traveling to Oslo. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the rest of the book as I didn't have chance to venture outside of Oslo, but I would highly recommend it if you are traveling to Oslo.

Covered Oslo well but not the rest of the country. Trip Advisor forums were more helpful.

Edited to update: I wrote this review below while still doing my research on our 16 day Norway trip and I'm back to update. Our trip consisted of Andalsnes (not covered in this book), Alesund (not covered in this book), Geirangerfjord (not covered in this book), Bergen (good coverage, we scanned the pertinent sections into our phones), the Flam Railway (covered but he puts a higher importance on it than I do), Balestrand (again good coverage) and 5 days in the Lofoten Islands (not covered at all in this book). I stand by my review that I was very disappointed with the lack of coverage of this country. However, the small portion of the book we did use did give Rick's usual reliable and accurate information. Everything below this is what I wrote before we left.I've been to Europe 4 times and every time used a Rick Steves' guide book as my main source of planning. Though I am still in my planning stages for Norway, I am already disappointed with this guide.He leaves out large portions of the country including all of the northern areas. Gives way too much attention to Oslo, book space that could be devoted to more fjord coverage, the main reason people travel to Norway.He has a short paragraph on Pulpit Rock with no real valuable information on the logistics and doesn't mention kjeragbolten at all.I will use this guide but will be doing a lot more research on the Internet this time to plan probably half of my trip due to the lack of information in this guide. I can't speak to the accuracy or helpfulness of its contents until I return.

Rick Steve’s once again proves that he writes the best travel guides available . The detail he provides is extraordinary but I really love the way he has the book organized . It’s intuitive - making it very easy to cruise around the book while you are planning . I also bought Lonely Planets Norway guide and I tried to use it but found it confusing and poorly laid out . This is my 5th Rick Steve’s travel book and he doesn’t let me down . Hey Rick - write books about regions or special events . We are planning a trip to Oktoberfest and want to know all the ins and outs like only you can do . Please ?😄

We could have wide prosperity if we controlled our money. How can you get out of debt if all you do is borrow money to try to get out of debt. You can never do it that way. It's a good book and offers solutions-workable solutions.

I have long known that our news media is "controlled" like never before. But what I read in this book is every U.S. citizens worst nightmare. It is extremely important. Like I said, a MUST READ.

Mr. Hellyer’s book was an excellent review of the western worlds corrupt banking system and the polices that make the 1% rich as Midas and the other 99% their respective slaves. Though slave seems harsh it is an accurate appraisal of what is going on, unfortunately the media is nothing more than propaganda lap dogs we can expect no help from them.As far as UFO’s are concerned he is ahead of the curve talking about them except for HUD secretary Catherine Austin Fitts no one speaks aloud about our governments relationship with them.there are several chapters in the Bible that match these creatures and their agenda,to a tee I get very nervous when I hear such thing and so should everyone should else.If you buy this book and read it give it to a friend when you’re done, since ignorance of what is going on is how the 1% stay in power.

Paul Hellyer has a passion for the truth and is not afraid to be the first government official to publicly proclaim the reality of the extraterrestrial nature of the craft that crashed in New Mexico in 1947. He shows how the secret cabal of elite powerful individuals that organize under names such as the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Bilderberg Group.However, this is book of hope..that if the people of this planet can overcome the wickedness of the cabal by resisting their plans, we can sustain the goodness of the Earth for generations to come.

I found this book to be very informative, but also depressing. As a lifelong believer in "movers and shakers" acting behind the scenes pulling all the strings like the Wizard of Oz, it is refreshing to read an authoritative source confirming these facts. I had no idea how the worldwide banking cartel imposes it's economic slavery on all of us. After reading this, you may feel insignificant and powerless; but you will also realize how corrupt our government really is and how greed, power, and stupidity is an endless cycle.

Wow! This guy is great. I like the way he keeps both feet on the ground while he explains the unthinkable. He would know. He was there.

This cookbook is beautifully designed. The unique concept has encouraged me to try more meatless options with confidence. Damaris talks about the food with love and honesty. Most of the recipes are shown with perfect illustrations.

My husband and I are vegan and we both love this book. There are carnivore, vegetarian, and vegan versions listed for recipes, which is so helpful for people that are transitioning between diets, or just trying something out. There is something in it for everybody. We both highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who loves food and wants to cook some delicious meals.

I enjoy this chef on her television show, had thought some of the recipes from her show may be in the book. (but not so). I enjoyed the read of the book and may use a few of the recipes.

I've loved Damaris's recipes and the instruction that goes along with them, while watching Southern at Heart and now Bobby and Damaris! Her Facebook Live shows are fun to watch. So, buying the book was a no-brainer! The side dishes are so different from what I'm used to seeing, but so suited for the upcoming holidays. The desserts sound scrumptious, and I'm starting easy, with a pound cake! The book is a fun read, as each recipe has an explanation or story to go along. The photos of Damaris and Darrick are cute, too! I'm seriously thinking about buying the Kindle version so that I can plan meals and shopping lists while sitting at the doctor's office or waiting at the car wash!

My favorite is the Meatless Meatloaf. This is my 'go to' book when I need a veggie alternative for my husband. I so enjoy finding the way Damaris creates a dish and then gives me a meat alternative! I am a carnivore and hubby is a vegetarian so the options are endless. I keep my cookbooks out and a friend came over, saw it, and could not put it down! I surprised her with a copy of the book the next week. Thank you Damaris for giving us this gift of your meat alternative recipes!!!!

i love damaris and her book does not disappoint. not only is it gorgeous to just look at, but the recipes are delightful and i love all the tips about making swaps to make a recipe vegetarian or vegan

Love, love, love the book! I have gone back and forth between vegan, vegetarian and meateater so much over the years it will make your head spin, mostly for health reasons. The one problem I always ran into was how do I feed the rest of my family that aren't cutting out things without having to make 2 different meals? This book answers that question with the solution of giving ideas of what proteins or other things to add to sub out veggie ingredients for the rest of the family. Great concept that is friendly to everyone and not just focused on veggies only

I love reading and hearing Damaris voice in my head. I like she puts many options in her recipes and makes it easier to understand how to convert my own recipes into plant based. Thanks for such a great book.

this was a magnificent book. the reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is NOT a history of the wars of the roses. it only covers the period of lancaster vs york. however, it covered this in a complete manner, going back to the roots of the war during the reign of richard ii (many books start much later. you lose some of the causes and influences that way. good for red roses, bad for white roses). who, how, why he was disposed of his rule and who took the kingship is crucial to understanding the later claims of york over lancaster.add-in note - i was just reading another book that started in 1420. when it got to a clash between gloucester and a beaufort, there was a quick note about who they were, but not nearly enough context to understand it, unless you know the subjet well already.. with this book, you have the context the understand who the bueaforts are and why they are reallllly important, as well why there would be contention around them. --- end notethe author concentrates on the people and their motivations, rather than just the mind-numbing actions. the corruption of the councils during the two minority kingships, the struggles of the power groups, the influence of france and burgundy, the reform movements that failed due to queen margaret, etc. one ends up knowing the main flow of events and why things occured as they did.ps - you need to print out the genealogy charts. you can't keep track of the players and their interrelationships without a score card. her charts have been simplified over most charts one sees, so that you can see what's going on easily.

One of the best history books I've read in a while, and I read a lot! The author hit the perfect balance of content with readability. Doesn't get too bogged down in detail yet covers all the bases. The subject can be a very confusing one, with all the various names and Titles becoming tedious at times. But Weir handles this beautifully and I rarely found myself having to go back and re-read a portion like I do with other books on this period. Excellent background story on King Richard II and the lead up to the wars. I can't believe how much great detail on the character's lives she was able to include. She makes the connection between characters. She seemed to answer every question I could have thought to ask. What was the motivation of these people? What in their background made them this way? She avoids the overly academic dull prose and gets straight to the point. She avoids the impulse of many history writers to write mainly to impress their peers. Instead it is beautifully written, flows along in a logical manner, and makes for a book even non-history buffs might want to read. My only complaint is that the book ends with the reign of Edward IV and we don't get to hear more about Richard III, because I bet she would do a wonderful job with that as well.

While I'd always been aware of the so-called Wars of the Roses in British history (I knew it was the Yorks and the Lancasters and it finally ended for good when the two houses intermarried and formed the House of Tudor), it doesn't tend to be taught in American schools. Which is why it's perfect that Alison Weir has a whole book just about that period in English history: The Wars of the Roses.It's a confusing story, to be sure: it seems like virtually every man in it is named Edward, Richard, or Henry, and they're all related to each other, besides. But Weir does her best to distinguish each of them, and she traces the conflicts not just from the point that they formally began, but from the point where they are rooted. The fighting doesn't get started until about halfway through, but it would be well nigh impossible to understand without all the preamble. She sets her stage carefully, and, much to my relief, when the fighting begins, it doesn't turn into a straight blow-by-blow battle narrative. I find descriptions of war maneuvers to be boring beyond measure, but Weir tells us enough to give us a sense of the battles but not make us feel like we're sitting through a military history lecture.As always in Weir's work, it's well-sourced (she uses sources contemporary to the events being described, and traces language use back to ensure that she's giving the proper context to what was being reported) and well-written, with a definite sense of narrative and not just fact-dumping. One minor quibble, though, with this book is that it doesn't quite see the Wars through to what I thought to be their end: the ascension of Henry VII and his marriage to Princess Elizabeth of York. While I was hoping to get a bit more information about the end stages of the Wars, I definitely enjoyed getting Weir's take on the period she covered, and would recommend the book to others curious about this period of English history.

Finally, a book that makes sense of the Wars of the Roses! Turns out that the whole thing - that convulsed England, Wales, and Scotland for decades - was about the macho pride of about 70 people, the very high nobility. Weir does everyone a favor by giving genealogical charts of the major families involved; I bookmarked them on my Kindle, because it was helpful to refer to them often. Part of the problem, of course, is that one person could be known by 1) his real name, 2) as Duke Somethingorother, 3) as Count Somethingelse, or as Bishop/Archbishop Evensomethingdifferent. One more table giving all the different names borne by an individual, would have been very helpful. Otherwise, the writing is clear, even vivid, and the author sets the motivations of the various characters firmly in context, giving some sense to what at first glance can be an impenetrable thicket of battles, plots, and treachery. Good book, well worth a read. This book covers only the first half of the wars and the Yorkist high point; now I need to go get the author's book on the second half, which covers the eventual triumph of the Lancastrians in the person of Henry VII (who was initially ignored by the Lancastrians - what a mess!)
