There are just so many books out there that either assume you are an idiot or an expert: this book presents example after example taking you from the basics to a great understanding of iPhone Development with Xcode and Swift.Each example gradually builds up, working with what you have already learnt and uses small apps that are sufficiently complex that they do represent the real code that you will want to use. Because Swift is building on an existing heritage of code, there are many obscure ways of using the iPhone SDK to achieve what you want and need. This book gently takes you through each step, showing alternative approaches as you work through the book (particularly with Xcode there are many different way to do the same thing, but this book gradually shows you those ways); equally, with the different toolkits, it is obvious that Apple has migrated between ways to do things (e.g. function parameters to closures). This book gives you an excellent starting point for what ever you want to achieve.It is one of the very few programming books I have ever read (and worked through all the non-trivial examples) from start to finish, finding new nuggets in every chapter. Even at the end, when I finally went through their overview of Swift, I found answers to aspects of the language, that while I could use, I did not fully understand.A word of advice: Do not second guess the authors, and assume that because you would have done it differently, they are wrong: frequently later in the chapter they point out shortcomings in their original code and show how to improve it or explain why they have taken that particular approach. Equally, if your project shows errors *always* read the next page, as often more work is needed before a project will compile (and when they tell you to compile & run, do not proceed further with code until it does!) Trust their code: apart from the minor changes Apple made to when you need to unwrap variables (see the errata on the Apress website), I typed in every project and any problems were my typo's, not their code.

I've bought a lot of programming books on Amazon for just about everything imaginable. Without exception, most have had flow issues where either the example didn't pan out or the instructions skipped a beat, leaving you stuck in the middle of a project. This can be extremely frustrating because you virtually cannot continue.I'm into Chapter 4 of this book and so far the text has been SPOT ON. Not only is the detail very clear, but the authors explain everything and the purpose behind it. This has given me a new appreciation for iOS and Xcode. There's even a little dry humor to levitate the complexity.I'm running on an older Mac Mini with only 2gb of memory and keeping up. The only issue so far was keyboard related whereby I needed to disconnect my system keyboard because the iOS text and numeric keyboards would not pop up or disappear for "done/tap out."Bottom line: this is the best programming book I've had the pleasure to study. I highly recommend.

I have just completed reading this book. It is a very good introductory book for iPhone development.There are few small mistakes but nothing critical to prevent you from understanding.Sometimes, I wish they would have gone a little "behind" the topic (theory). For example, explaining what exactly happens to an object in foreground when another object appears on top of it. The Presistent chapter is not explained very well, specially the part on sqlite3. Had to read about it over the net.I don't think this book suits people with no programing experience and for that matter, Object Oriented Programming.I would have given it 4.5 stars, but there is no such option.In my opinion this book and Big Nerd Ranch iOS (actually all Big Nerd Ranch books are superb) are the best introductory book for iPhone.In my opinion, Big Nerd Ranch is a little better (5 starts in my opinion) but it is now a little outdated (for Xcode 5 and Objective-C, no Swift).I would highly recommend this book!!!

The book walks you through everything you need to create an app. And with the latest release of xcode you can now port your app to your device. Very cool. For me I found I needed to know swift really well to fully grasp the concepts. Also I would have liked some exercises to challenge me to do something on my own to help reinforce the concepts.

Like you, I've had many many tech books over the years. I can honestly say; this is the best one's I've ever purchased. *I'm not friends with any of the Authors... Just tellin' it like it is. All the code works perfectly. Instructions are complete. I wish all books were this tight.

I was expecting the book to talk more about Swift, explaining the language and why certain methods were used. It doesn't do that. Maybe it's my fault in that my expectations were different than what the book provides. I know Objective-C and was looking for a book that would help me learn Swift. This book assumes you know nothing about iOS development and you're just starting out. The first 100 pages I basically just skimmed through because it didn't really explain Swift as much as it explained how to use Xcode and what the various controls were.If you don't have any iOS coding background and what to learn how to code using Swift, this book will help you. If you already know how to code and want to learn how to use Swift to code, this isn't the book for you.

Great book. Perfect for the experienced or beginner programmer. Takes you step by step through creating apps in a simple and easy way to understand! Would recommend this book for anyone who want to develop apps for apple using the new easier swift language.

Upon receipt of the merchandise, you will get a jolt: how can such a skinny booklet justify spending $75? Its contents are specific exercises, to be performed using the data files in the accompanying DVD. It walks you step by step and the underlaying intention seems to be to teach the basics, for you to extrapolate to your own needs. Not a word about why, just do what I say and shut up. Obviously, someone will write the manual later on... I gave it three stars because it really teaches you the basics... I did not fill the remaining two stars because of my too many why's... A tad expensive (it wants to be $34.95)...

Yeah, it's a "workbook" format -- as advertised -- BUT: there's absolutely no explanation of what you're doing or why. It's 63 pages of "click this icon; save that file; click 'Done' ".With some context, these might be useful exercises. Without any, they're pretty much what you'd do to figure out how any new app works - only it costs $75.00! I just got ripped; don't YOU do the same.

I wish I could have seen more of the inside of this book, it was not what I wanted. I wanted a manual of Fireworks so I could learn how to work the program.

I'd heard that Fireworks could do web graphics much better than Photoshop so gave this book a try based on my previous good experience with a Noble Desktop book. It completely met my expectations and now I am amazed at how easy it is to mock up and prepare graphics for my websites. As for the comments of the gentleman who wanted more explanation of why you do things -- it's true, this book is nuts and bolts on how to get things done. But I'd have to disagree that you need the "why." I already know what I want to do -- this book tells me how to do it, in the most concise and efficient way possible.

Beautiful stories and exceptionally detailed artwork! I've been slowly acquiring these fine tales over the course of several months including Blue Beard (on March 12th of 2014) Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper ( on July 24, 2014) The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods (July 24th 2014 as well) and The Master Cat or Puss in Boots (on September 3, 2014) so with the addition of Little Red Riding Hood as part of this collection I feel like now I have finally completed the set (having already purchased Beauty and the Beast & Jack and the Beanstalk separately). Marvelous illustrations (as I mentioned before) with five tales for the price of one make this a wonderful bargain. Only reason I'm rating it 4 stars is that it does not provide an active table of contents so that you could access the stories in any order you choose. Otherwise I'd say it's "Nearly Perfect in Every Way" and a great buy that I do recommend!

Five classic Perrault stories with full color illustrations which are exquisite. (Even in black and white on my Paperwhite they are excellent!) Puss in Boots in this book is a black cat and so his boots really stand out. As for the story of Bluebeard, this one could be classed as a little gruesome! (Kids will love it!) What happened to Bluebeard's other wives? When he goes on a business trip he tells his present wife that she may go everywhere but enter the small closet. Guess what? Temptation is too much and she opens the closet only to discover the bodies of the murdered wives! When Bluebeard comes home he finds out what she has done and says she must join them! Will she be saved or go to her fate?!In Little Red Riding Hood, both Little Red and the grandmother get eaten. Will the huntsman save them in time? Cinderella AKA Cinderwench gets to go to the ball two nights in a row.Wonderful classics now in an easy-to-read format, preserved for always.Please note that the Kindle version appears to open on Page 4 for some reason so you need to scroll back to the beginning before starting to read.

This book is filled with old favorites, told in easy language and is fit for kids of all ages (including me!!).I'm not sure who is enjoying the stories more - my grandson (listening to me read) or me (reading)!

A fine and complete edition of a classic book, it is one worth reading even if you're familiar with most of the stories just for having a more complete background and overview of the entire collection from Charles Perrault.

All the old and good ones from my childhood now being shared with the great granddaughter when she is over. Lots of fun and I like the time spent sharing my love of reading.

These stories are oldies but goodies told quickly for those with short attention spans. My grandsons loved these. That is an accolade if ever there was one.

So, I don't think this was worthwhile for me as my grand daughter has been exposed to the ipad and wanted these stories in color. For some time, she was in "love" with my Kindle but it has lost its appeal. (Not for me, I bought the Kindle touch knowing that if I had the Kindle fire she would capture it.) I know, that's selfish but effective.

Great book, it actually is more on the data/storage/indexing side than Manning's Information Retrieval (which is more on the NLP side), but that what I like about it, it nicely complements Manning. If you are coming to IR from databases, read this one first, if you are coming from NLP read Manning's first, but read them both (i.e. don't be fooled in thinking you can get away with just getting one and not the other).

This book is very well organized and covers all the issues associated with information retrieval very well. It is not a light book, I plan on going back and reading it again after a first pass. I am reading this book concurrently with Lucene in Action by Michael McCandless and it is cool to see how the theory is applied in practice.Lucene in Action, Second Edition: Covers Apache Lucene 3.0 I am returning to relearn IR and this book is making it fun.

I learned a fair amount from this book. It content is well organized. The discussions are clear and supported by good examples. I found very few typos.My main concern about this book is that it is a bit dated at this point (late 2016). I hope the authors come out with a new edition soon. Still, the basics of the subject have not changed that much, so this fact alone should not discourage you from reading.

I don't really love it, but I'm going to have to defer to other reviewers because I don't think I'm going to make it through. Call if overconfidence in my own abilities, lack of respect for the stated prerequisites, or just plain old age, but this book is too much for me. I guess I thought i could get some snippets of code and make a homemade search engine or something, but it turns out that instead it just brought back memories of the class I dreaded most from my college career: Statistics 201 (or something.like that). Seems very well written from the introductory material that I did make it though, and if I was more mathematically ambitious I would keep plowing on through and surely pick up some good information. Like most of my big, bright ideas, the actual implementation phase is what kills me.

Excellent book, topics are treated well and in a proper order. The bibliografís and exercises are right handed.

This book arranges lots of equations on information retrieval. But I rather think, the book Search Engines Information Retrieval in Practice is a little bit better than this...Not Brilliant.

The authors assume readers will hold a degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering and be familiar with analysis of algorithms and time complexity. Sadly, that is not me. I wouldn't know a probability mass function from a communion wafer; but, I nevertheless found the concepts explained in lucid ways that my lawyer brain could grasp, and the splendid organization allowed me to progress much further than my liberal arts background should allow. This is fine book, and a surprisingly engaging read. If you are not comfortable with such things, you may find the complex equations later in the book to be daunting; but, don't despair. The prose is clear and the examples offered easy to understand. Information retrieval is the lifeboat that will keep us from drowning in a growing sea of data. It's worth the effort to fathom.

Would have been a "5" but the publishers Skipped the INDEX and plastered advertising at the end. Pretty cheesy decision.On the whole, this is a book incredibly important for the well being of our children, and to bare down on the pricks of this case who call themselves lawyers -- they enabled an extremely successful, almost industrial-level, serial child rapist.Why? Because Epstein was Filthy Rich. In American Justice, money talks. And in Epstein's case, it screamed.Hats off to Patterson for walking on the wild side of non-fiction. The world of sane, healthy people, and all parents, owe him and the others a lot of gratitude for getting this story out to the public. Child Sex Trafficking is the scourge of the 1%. Epstein over here, and Savile across the Pond, each will become doors to this dark, foul world of sexual parasites feeding on the most vulnerable, just like the Vatican became a symbol for the same in the church. Hooyah.

Researched and written with John Connolly, an investigative reporter, and Tim Malloy, print and television journalist, James Patterson turned out yet again an interesting and page-turning book.Chapters remain short 2 — 4 pages in this 287 page book, including Coda and Epilogue.The subject is Jeffery Epstein, convicted in 2008, for soliciting an underage girl for prostitution. He serves 13 months of an 18 month sentence in the Palm Beach County Central Detention Center [the Stockade]. Wearing an ankle bracelet Epstein has "work release" privileges and allowed to leave prison grounds six days a week to go to his attorney's office, his office, or to his home on El Brillo Way in Palm Beach.In chapter's 32—33, Donald Trump bars Epstein from Mar-a-Lago when a member of the posh private resort complains to Trump his young daughter has been invited to Epstein's house, about two miles from the twenty acre resort. She goes, then complains to her father Epstein tries to get her to undress.Patterson writes, "...in no uncertain terms [Trump] told Epstein that he was barred from Mar-a-Lago" and Trump severs all ties with him.Epstein caters to ex-presidents [Clinton]; international politicians, royalty [Prince Andrew]; CEOs, Hollywood moguls ... you get the picture. His parties are infamous. His penchant for young girls, 14 and up, remains hidden from public scrutiny. The exceptions are those Eyes Wide Shut elite who pander along with his pedophile whims.Patterson, Connolly and Malloy have taken a sensitive subject and presented it with taste, in an interesting format in the Patterson drama to keep you turning the pages.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This is the story of Jeffrey Epstein and just a few of his victims. A man that did not come from money, and didn't even finish college, moved himself into some of the most rarified circles in the world just by his gift with numbers and knowledge of people. Amassing a great fortune, and having a reputation as a great man- smart and charming; one would think this would be enough. But he has a dark secret-an obsession. He likes under aged girls- "the younger the better". He would have them brought in to give him "massages" and would sexually abuse them. This went on for years with many young girls. When he was finally caught, he was charged only with one count of soliciting a prostitute and spent 13 months in jail of a 18 month sentence. How did he get off so lightly? How did he get away with this for so long? And even though he has been made to make restitution to many victims and is a registered sex offender, was justice really served? This book goes into all these question. I don't normally read true crime as I like a bit of distance between reality and my mayhem. This one, though.... the idea of it just would not leave me alone. My niece is only a year younger than Epstein's youngest victim listed in this book. That anyone could take these girls and do this to them.... it kills me. And then there's the fact that I had never heard of this case- nor had my family. How did it get kept so quiet? How was the time he served sufficient? What happened to his associates- and to the girls? There were so many questions. The authors took care, changing names and giving respect to the victims; and did their best not to sensationalize this case. Indeed, some reviewers even called it dry in parts, but I loved it. I liked that they added chapters in the victims (and Epstein's) point of view, so that you could better understand them and feel for them. I also liked that they added pieces of the police interviews. To me, this was the best way to do a story like this. I would give it a four star review. Four Stars On the adult content scale... by the very nature of this book I would not hand it to a young teen. It isn't written for a young audience. There is language, sexual violence... I would give it a nine
