Aesthetic Theory (Theory and History of Literature)

From the Back Cover

The culmination of a lifetime of aesthetic investigation, Aesthetic Theory is Adorno's major work, a defense of modernism that is paradoxical in its defense of illusion. In it, Adorno takes up the problem of art in a day when "it goes without saying that nothing concerning art goes without saying". In the course of his discussion, Adorno revisits such concepts as the sublime, the ugly, and the beautiful, demonstrating that concepts such as these are reservoirs of human experience. These experiences ultimately underlie aesthetics, for in Adorno's formulation "art is the sedimented history of human misery".

Adorno's Aesthetic Theory is not the first book you want to grab if you neither have a solid foundation in the basics of the German philosophical tradition, nor have spent some time reading other, more simplistic texts on aesthetics. This book is paratactic — some paragraphs run for several pages. This is intentional; Adorno's hope is to force the reader to think in a radial fashion, returning, like a spiral, back to ideas already presented, but framed differently. This aggravates many. It is also a posthumous work, so it's quite unrefined. Inasmuch as it might be foolhardy to snip choice quotes out of their paratactic contexts, thereby squelching the experience Adorno is trying to force the reader into, it is also foolhardy to believe this represents Adorno at his best.Reading Hullot-Kentor's Translator's Introduction is a must. If you heed his suggestion and read the Draft Introduction first and then approach the beginning as he states, the text in general will make much more sense early on than if you try to start at the beginning and dive off the cliff into the chaos of words. Finally, for those who can surmount these caveats, I believe you will, about one-third of the way through, begin to appreciate the effort for not only its choice snippets, but the work as a whole.

This book feels like reading a great mind as his thoughts emerged on the page. It happens to be Adorno's last unfinished work, and almost seems pre-production in its thought process but has been faithfully translated from German as it was left...be warned you will come away as if you just penetrated a mind in mid thought and heard everything word for word. Read in small bits it begins to make sense as your subconscious mind rearanges his thoughts into an order that become relateable. Adorno gets to the Meat of what Art is and threatens to be, as much as elucidating what it becomes...ergo, from passionate hands to ears and eyes, to passionate hearts, so go the journey of the arts. Had it been more cogent I would have made it 5 stars. There is an oceanic depth to his discussion and points...dive deep with him and come away with sand and silt dripping from your hands gouged from the bottom of the dark abyss that is Art.

Extremely dense, and it probably shouldn't be your first Adorno, but if you know what you're getting into, this strikes me as a very nice edition. [I know some German but am not fluent, and would certainly not call myself an expert on Adorno, so take my evaluation for only what it's worth]

Happy with purchase.

Adorno is not famous for his writing style. His prose is dense, and sometimes impenetrable for the English reader. Yet, I think Adorno's Aesthetic Theory is one of the greatest books of XX century philosophy along with Heidegger's "Being and Time", and Wittgenstein's Tractatus. I think there are three levels of reflection in this book. The first is that AT is a sociology of art. Adorno traces the social and economic conditions of how modern art becomes to being. Industrialization and modernization have a great impact on aesthetics because perception and reality are fundamentally altered. Adorno makes the case that the destruction of nature by industry propels modern art to find its reality elsewhere by becoming abstract. Art does not want to imitate nature since nature is already destroyed. It escapes to the realm of idea(l)s in order to critique the current state of being. Aesthetics is the second level of reflection. Aesthetics in modernism becomes an instrument of social critique. Before, in the time of Kant and the idealists, aesthetic was the study of beauty and artistic genius. Now, according to Adorno, it becomes the study of social disintegration in which the artist is just the "unfortunate" medium to express it. Yet, Adorno is not a complete pessimist. He sees in aesthetic reflection a tool for utopian transformation. This transformation constitutes the third level of reading AT -the philosophical or utopian. Modern art, because it critiques this world for the sake of a better one, is also philosophy. Since philosophy was the discipline that established how the real and ideal are separated, modern art also shows this gap, and treats beauty as a poor substitute for happiness. Beauty, once idealized by the elite, becomes a sign of art's powerlessness to transform the world. This impotence, still, is a sign of art's utopian power. This kind of paradoxical reasoning is typical of Adorno, and it is loaded with political significance. Art promises something that cannot be delivered, but who delivers then?

I borrowed my Kindle version from the local library.I wish I would have had the energy at four in the morning to write this. That was when I finished it. You would have thought this was my usual fluff of sci-fi/fantasy. But, no. This was supposed to be my bedtime book. Science research, no monsters to chase in sleep. So much for dreaming.I am intrigued about the brain, the mind. I am of many minds, and the book made that clear. So no dull fall to sleep, dry science. Mr. Eagleman kept the reader engaged with personable examples.I think what kept me awake the most were the questions. This book presents so many. Culpable. That word came up numerous times. I like looking into a world that David Eagleman portrays, even if getting there might be frightening. It is better to rehabilitate than incarcerate, but first we need to figure out what is normal and what isn't. AND what actually helps make us all better beings.

I was that annoying kid in high school math who would raise his hand with an answer before the teacher had finished asking the question. My strategy was simple. During the question, if I was comfortable that I knew the answer, the hand would go up. I knew I had a few seconds before I was called on, and the odds of being called on were low -- unless no one else raised their hand. A bit after I felt comfortable that I knew the answer, it would become available for me to open my mouth and say it. I was normally right, and usually would then be asked how I had reached that answer. This was always the hardest part, and I struggled internally to deduce how this could have happened. Such an explanation was usually right too.In high school math, I knew something I did not quite understand until reading this book, and did not verbalize until writing this review: that we can know before we can say, that our reasoning can be at first non-conscious, and then, with effort, be piped up to our feeble consciousness, as if it had taken place there. We give great credit to our consciousness, very little credit to our brains. It should be the other way around. As it turns out, our conscious experience is a small, dim fragment of our actual experience. When a perception finally reaches our consciousness, it has been washed clean of noise, twisted according to our expectations and prejudices, and packaged into something more familiar. Most everything that happens in that brain never reaches the surface of awareness. If you think your brain is a second class citizen, and your consciousness is driving things, then read Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, by David Eagleman. Turns out that much of the action is below consciousness. You know this from your reactions to brake in a dangerous situation before you are fully aware of the danger, or to pull your hand from the stove before you become aware of the pain. The decision-making process of the unconscious brain is not always revealed to our consciousness. In one study, men rated some women as more attractive than others from photographs, but couldn't explain why. Turns out, the pupils of the more attractive women had been artificially dilated with Photoshop. The unconscious brain knows that dilated pupils are an indicator of sexual arousal. You must read Eagleman's book. When you are finished, you will marvel even more at what the hundreds of billions of neurons in your head can do, understand yourself a bit better, and maybe even understand that your "self" is just a constructed reality.

I liked this a lot. Pretty clear that we are finally getting a handle on our brains really work. It's a contest in there! And WE are not really in charge of it.Now, if someone could just give me a way to "paternalistically" update the brains of those around me so they are not so STUPID, we might have something worthwhile. Just kidding. If you read in this literature, we ALL think we are right and they are wrong - no matter what the topic.

Next to The Alchemist, this is my Second All Time Favorite! Definitely on the top of my bookshelf and I must read it again before I leave this world. This book gives amazing insight into the mind, that we do not see, hear, read or talk about on a regular basis, or even at all. Simple yet complex with an amazing delivery.I actually referred this book to a friend of mine who was having problems with her teenage daughter, and guess what, they're best of friends now. That speaks volumes in my world! I've never seen a book do that, and my explanation of what's in the book would have just watered down its value! Great work Mr. Eagleman!

A review of Incognito: the secret lives of the brain (2011) by David EaglemanDavid Eagleman is a neuroscientist with expertise in genetics, evolution, animal behavior, philosophy, and criminal justice. He has a studied eye to the future and how his discipline may inform our sense of self, of justice, and free will. The book disposes of any notion of what we see and hear being an accurate representation of the physical world, the possibility of our objectivity, and blame as a fair basis for sentencing. As a consummate scientist he rejects reductionism in favor of the emergent qualities of the aggregate of simpler systems. Neurons, hormones, and transmitters, will never explain consciousness. Most of what we do is programmed by genes working neural systems that never arise to the level of consciousness. These systems have overlapping and competitive functions that get resolved by trial and error. Occasionally, especially at the learning stage, consciousness may have to intervene in the conflict of rival functions--as when we are learning to ride a bike or field a fly ball. But eventually these behaviors become totally removed from the thinking process. He does not over emphasis inheritance at the expense of the importance of the interaction of genes with experience and environment. Eagleman theorizes that consciousness arises as a function of the number of inborn options we have available to resolve behavioral problems--humans having the most options and so the most consciousness. I loved the book because of its breath and originality.Jerry Woolpy

Good book; heavy on facts, a lot of quotes from actual Rockstar/DMA employees. Content is well-organized, and while it does mostly center on the Houser brothers, there's quite a bit on R* and DMA in general. The only issue that I have with this book is the editing. There are sentences that make no sense, and there is an unusually high number of typos. Sometimes the context is enough to understand what the author means - sometimes not. But if there is one thing that is absolutely infuriating it's the misspelling of "pixelated". Kushner is absolutely hellbent on using this word (as many as three times in one chapter), and each time he spells it as "pixilated" - which, while an actual word, means something completely unrelated. And while this may seem like a petty thing to bring up, the frequency of this is what makes it.. annoying.Overall though, great book, definitely worth a read.

If David Kushner's other book (Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture) is about success and business souring a friendship, then "Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto" is about the cold business world destroying wild dreams and ambitions.Sam Housar is a man who came to America with such wild dreams. The president and co-founder of Rockstar Games wanted to create video games that reminded him of the movies he enjoyed in his youth. Not only that, he wanted to make games immersive and sophisticated - an art form that older generations could no longer stereotype as 'children's toys.' But after the multimillion dollar success of the Playstation 2's "Grand Theft Auto" trilogy, Sam and his rebel crew at Rockstar found themselves caught in the crosshairs of an American culture war fueled by puritanical politicians and parents. Pressure only worsened as Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, was struck by fraud investigations. Suddenly, making envelope-pushing video games was no longer a dream job... collided with cold reality, it was hell on earth. The Hot Coffee scandal in particular really drove the boys to the brink. "Jacked" does a good job of showing the immense amounts of tension and soul-crushing strife in the aftermath that forced many to leave the company and others to view their stressful work environment as a place that wasn't quite so fun anymore.Meanwhile, behind enemy lines and spearheading the attack on Rockstar (or at least trying to make a name for himself as a crusader for justice) was an embittered Miami lawyer. Having already had moderate success against Two-Live Crew and Howard Stern, Jack Thompson trained his litigating guns on a new scourge that was not only threatening the youth of America in his eyes, but putting his young son in danger on a daily basis: violent video games. And Rockstar made just the type of product that got Thompson's infamous press releases rolling."Jacked" fascinated me. I followed the entire controversy and free-for-all between Thompson, politicians and Rockstar Games during my college years, and this book recounts those warring days in perfect detail. I remember the blowup over "Kill All the Haitians," Hot Coffee, the numerous proposed bills, and Thompson's persistent trolling of GamePolitics.com. I was there for it all - and "Jacked" was a wonderful trip back in time as well as a fulfilling journey behind the scenes.Speaking of Jack Thompson, the book's portrayal of him is surprisingly sympathetic. For gamers, he has come to represent a kind of mustache-twirling supervillain, a destroyer of fun wherever it may be. In stark contrast, the man presented here is a concerned father who only wants to make the world a safer, cleaner place for his son. Of course, if one were to dig up Thompson's lengthy, rambling, bile-filled press releases (which "Jacked" doesn't quite reproduce) they might see a different side of the disbarred lawyer... perhaps a man driven mad by a crusade that has consumed him. Each chapter is headed by an illustration or quote that makes the story feel like it's straight out of a "Grand Theft Auto" playthrough. As Rockstar gets in larger amounts of trouble, the chapters are illustrated with increasing 'Wanted Level' stars. I loved this little element - it made the book even more of a fun ride.Perhaps the book could have gone into more detail about some things. For example, Kushner left out any mention of Volition Inc. and how Sam Housar might have felt about the GTA clone "Saints Row" series - especially "Saints Row 2," which some gamers jumped onto as a response to GTA IV's focus on heavy realism and man-dates. The Sam in "Jacked" doesn't strike me as the type of person who would be too happy about that. All in all, this was not only a great book, but a captivating page turner. I was sad to see it end so quickly. Like "Masters of Doom," "Jacked" has all the right elements for a fantastic movie: drama, humor and heartbreak. If you're like me and you've spent hundreds of hours between "GTAIII," "Vice City" and "San Andreas," you'd be doing yourself a huge favor by reading this book.

I could follow the two main characters well enough. But there were a lot of other people covered, and I had trouble keeping them all straight.I did love the small chapters. Let me finish a chapter very often and move on to subsequent ideas.Did not really know a lot about the GTA game before reading this. Was pretty educational too.

This book was so good that I bought the author's other video game related book masters of doom and I'm gone to read it right after this review. As a life long gamer and as a fan and GTA player had to read it as I said I'm a life long gamer but right about now I'm at the stage where I want to know what's going on behind the scenes and how video games are made and the people who may them and their motivation and is not my first video game book about the subject I guess I'm trying to get inside game developer's mind because one hopefully I can make may own game's one day. That could only be half as good as the game and the author (David Kushner) and other video game book author have written about it's a great book and if your a life long fan of games like I am pick it up

history of GTA game and Rockstar and its founders. The book is pretty long for a business book and it is more entertaining and history. appreciate insights into important events

As an avid fan of Rockstar this book was a little disappointing. Overall it was well written and informative, but I suppose you can't hope for a happy ending in non fictionI expected a good deal of bias. I figured Sam Houser would be portrayed as likeable, while Jack Thompson would be slandered. However, I felt sympathetic towards both men at the start of the book and sort of hated them both by the end. Additionally, Rockstar's actions throughout the GTA controversies and the working conditions, apparently for all of their games, left me feeling a bit guilty for supporting the company.Overall, I enjoyed the book a great deal, finishing it within a day, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth, despite the fact that Kushner tried to show how they had "grown up" with GTA IV.

I enjoyed Masters of Doom a lot more. This one was semi interesting but lacked any unified story other than the censorship people vs the rockstar games....not really worth a whole book in my opinion.

Starting from the humble beginnings of the 2D top down original game to Grand Theft Auto IV, this book chronicles the hardships, the luck and the controversies that went into making these series of violent yet innovative bar-pushing games. A great read that even manages to humanize Jack Thompson, once the enemy of gamers everywhere.

I really hate writing a bad review but seeing all the 5 star reviews here (prob people paid to write a review) I have to be honest and give it to you guys straight- an honest review. This book is really not worth the money. Its primary goal is to get people to a score of 150 and the book demonstrates this nicely. What you will get is a very basic overview of the authors sob story of doing all the prep tests 1 through 70 something only to scrape by with a 150, very basic concepts that look like dumbed down versions found in powerscore bibles, with no practice problems, and a useless book that you will probably never finish reading on your kindle. Stick with a prep course, or the LSAT trainer, or Powerscore bibles, or Blueprint books, or any other (or a combination of) very reputable prep sources. Save your money

“An LSAT PREP TEST GUIDE FOR THE NON LOGICAL THINKER” and that is exactly what this book is. The LSAT is hard for many to wrap their heads around. This book brings that balance and evens out the playing field for those who struggle with the exam. The story behind the author should be seen as inspirational. We often hear the boasted stories of those who have scored in the highest percentile, but what about those who are fighting to get there, those who are fighting to get a 150+ score. Here is your encouragement and here is your guide.

The concept of this game gets top marks. You play the children of the gods of various world mythologies in the modern world, but unknowingly because the gods have been mingling among humans in secret these past centuries. So surprise! That deadbeat dad who left your mom? Turns out he was actually Thor. Or you always thought your mom left you in an orphanage because she was a drug addict? Well, no it turns out she was the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet. Family is complicated and you're a demigod. This gets more fun when you end up chased down and beaten up by biker gangs being manipulated by one of the kids of your Uncle Loki who thinks roughing you up will teach you a lesson, or the son of Susano-O decides to throw a skinned horse through the window of the restaurant you work at because of a perceived slight.Add to that that the whole reason you even know about your godly bloodline is because your folks all had to go to war against the titans again and have had to leave the world in the care of the next generation--you guys. And oh, by the way, horrible monsters called titanspawn are going to frequently tear free of that divine war and show up on earth to conduct acts of terror. And who gets to stop them when that happens? Well you and any demigods you know who don't hate your guts.So there's lots of drama in this setting, which is a hallmark of White Wolf/Obsidian Path products. Like a lot of their products, they also do enough research to really feel like they know what they're talking about (until you start doing your own research and figure out just how little they know what they're talking about). But the book is pretty and the concepts are engaging, and it's a fun game to play as long as you're okay heavily adding on to it and rewriting stuff to make it work. The downsides aren't many, but they're frustrating and really hurt the finished product. The powers you get for being a demigod are frankly pretty terrible. You can make your hand glow like a flashlight. You can cause small plants to grow. Even at the very top end, if you buy any of these powers all the way to the top, most of them are still pretty terrible. There's a few that are insanely broken compared to the rest (though frankly that puts them about where you'd want powers for your godling character to be) like the one where you make a holy symbol of truthfulness and the person you're talking to just believes your story about whatever you're telling him unless people sit him down and line up the evidence. This is a pretty good one. Most of them just aren't. You end up feeling pretty weak--and it doesn't get any better. Apparently there's two other books in this series that give you better stuff. I haven't seen them, but you may want to check them out and see about yoinking the powers from one of those maybe.Another big problem is how the titanspawn are handled. I like the idea that maybe there's minotaurs in the cornfields on the outskirts of town, dragging off drunk cowboys from the local bar, knocking them unconscious to wake up in an improvised corn maze to try and escape. That kind of monster of the week is fun. But Scion takes the approach that titanspawn are largely retreaded to look and act like modern tropes--so you get hideous things like centaurs with engine blocks growing out of their ribcage and exhaust pipes for wings--because people used to ride horses, but now they ride motorcycles...get it? You get fire giants in trenchcoats and dwarves in flannel shirts and mining hardhats. Some of it is pretty cringeworthy. Medusas that bite girls with their hair snakes and turn them into lethal barflies that get you out into an alley and turn you to stone...that's actually a little cool.So yeah, lots of concept and a solid game but lots of implimentation and mechanics you'd be better off coming up with by yourself. Take it for what it's worth--you can have a lot of fun with it. A lot of the thinking behind it is kind of cheesy and the decisions the mechanics are pretty underwhelming, but if none of that ends up bothering you, you can end up with a really fun game.

This book is great.Introduces a new branch in RPG's playing as the son (or daughter) of an ancient good and developing his/her legend.Receive power and mystical gifts such as enchanted swords or powerful cellphones or cars (you can). The game system is easy to use and the preset adventure (characters for beginning players included) is great. The Fatebinding mechanic is nice and represents an endless canvas of possibilities for story-telling and of course, fun.The combat system is the flaw. It is boring, not dynamic and slow. All your adventure can be fast and exiting, but when you get into fights the game turns into a nightmare. For GM and players. Some things are not explained or included in the book such as the jaguar warriors the game mentions you can have as followers but when you look for them in the book, surprise!, There are none. So you have to talk to your GM to make adjustments and balance things and improvise (which in my opinion is good most of the time for storytelling, but not for mechanics and not for a core book).I recommend this book if you can take the time improve (or create a new one) the combat system (based on other games from White-Wolf) it will give you hours of fun and legend. And skip the centaurs presented in this book, that was not a good idea at all. Keep the original concept and things will be better.

I like the game so making sure I have the core rule books is kinda important right? Yes it is! Well anyway, the premise of the game is that you're child of one of the gods from an ancient pantheon. It's a blast and you should try it.

Good RPG using the white wolf system! Its a great system if you Story tell in a loose and fun fashion! If you like modern fantasy and the ancient gods you'll love to play/run this game!If your interested out play groups podcasting a Aesir saving the world game:http://ragnarokandroll.podbean.com/Jim

If you enjoy the WOD series this is a great addition especially if you like any history mythos. Easy to start and you dont have to be familiar with WOD to play as the book describes in detail how everything works from combat to getting around.

Scion hero is a great rpg, you can play it in almost any period of time with great possibilities of epic encounters and events that could change the fate of the whole world. The rules are simple and straitgh foward, even tough a very few of them lack some more deep explanation, like the necessity of touch in the Heal power. Even tough those minor details don't hurt the game. Another master piece from White-Wolf

It's a wonderful game and it's so hard to find that being able to order it online was a real treat. This is the first book of three corebooks (and a few companion books), so it's got all you need in order to be able to run an adventure. That includes character creation for your players and a pre-built adventure and characters for the GM if you're just starting out and don't want to make your own. It uses the same tick system that other White Wolf games use and generally I found it to be a well balanced game. Plus, who doesn't love a bit of mythology? On a note for the seller, it came in a timely manner and as described.

Being I love mythology this game is the best. This history and all the detail put in to the game makes you feel as if you are playing in a tv show. You can get alot out of this game when you know some mythology and studying it because when you bring it to the game you can feel the history of your god/parent.

Written by Wes Moore, it is the story of two boys with the same name, coming from the same Baltimore streets, both missing their dads from a young age and growing up in a female-headed household as so many people do. But, one Wes Moore becomes very successful in every sense of the word - taking after Colin Powell, while the other becomes wrapped up in "the game" (i.e. the illicit drug trade) and is eventually locked up for a bank robbery. . The author (the successful Wes Moore) questions why? You may have heard the interview with the author on NPR, I did.The book is ultimately about destiny, whether it's our own self-expectations or other people's expectations that determine the output of our lives. It also goes a lot into the social injustice in America, both racial discrimination and poverty, the school system, and the havoc that crack has wreaked. I'm only halfway through and it's very well-written, switching between the two Wes stories. With the same name, it can be hard to remember which is which, but luckily there are other characters that place the story (like their friends, moms and siblings). And of course, once their lives start to diverge, it's quite easy to remember where you are at. The successful Wes Moore is quite an amazing person, one who traveled to South Africa and noted the differences and parallels. His paragraphs on the manhood initiation ceremonies were some of the most fascinating, making me think about the lack of male role models and formal coming-of-age ceremonies in the US. With all of Wes's accomplishments, including fighting along with the 82nd airborne in Afghanistan, and working for Condi Rice, and now as an investment banker - I wonder if he intends on following Barack Obama's footsteps and going into politics. There is a controversy about this book and it has to do with the family of the police officer who was killed. I learned about this on Amazon.com. My feeling is that the policeman dying is a great tragedy, and the other Wes Moore is no way excused from that - and is in fact serving out his life in prison for being involved. However, bringing to light the desperate circumstances that young men and women find themselves in and questioning how we can change the game, change the options, is a valid and noble goal. Maybe the next murders can be prevented. I think this book has the potential to become a classic in the genre of African-American stories, revealing the history of the late 20th century the way that other books have written about slavery, or the Jim Crow south or the civil rights movement. Because, on top of being an interesting and relevant topic, it's also very well-written and engaging. The end of the book has a long and comprehensive list of organizations, nonprofits and charities that could make a difference in the lives of people like those in this book.

Our son, who is a high school junior, was assigned 'The Other Wes Moore.' It seemed an opportune time for me to read the copy that was on my bookshelf. Our son and his older brother were adopted when they were three weeks old. They are African-American and my wife and I are Caucasian. We live in Maine which is as far removed from large inner-city slums as living in the Land of Oz. The urban environment describe in Mr. Moore's work about Baltimore and New York City are similar to the city our sons' birth-mom lived. Our two sons have three older siblings who were not given up for adoption and lived in such an urban hellhole. Therefore, you can imagine 'The Other Wes Moore' hits very close to home. Our son said to me he was acutely aware while reading Mr. Moore's book that it could easily have been him and his brother living in Baltimore or the Bronx with limited options and life-altering decisions. Please keep in mind these are friggin' kids, people. They are not even remotely equipped to emotional and intellectually handle such an environment. Man, most adults couldn't handle it.Passages of Mr. Moore's book made my stomach hurt. It is a wonderful example showing how the trope "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" to rise out of poverty is pure B.S. The author clearly understands that he had an extended family who personally sacrificed in an effort to save him from being claimed by the streets. It does take a village. The other Wes Moore, however, was not so fortunate despite also being quite intelligent. 'The Other Wes Moore' is snapshots of events which occur between their early childhood in 1982 through to 2000. Mr. Moore writes in a sensitive manner and does a good job explaining the mood of the kids living in black slums as well as the enticements and many obstacles in their way. I grew up in a rural Maine paper mill town. Alcoholism was a big problem but, compared to what is portrayed in 'The Other Wes Moore', our small community had it made. Our country is littered with ghettos which are landmarks of generational racism towards minorities. Mr. Moore's book like other such works as 'There Are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in The Other America' by Alex Kotlowitz effectively humanize the inner-city predicament. The challenges of living in slums are not someone else's problem. It's a national disgrace and requires a collective effort to rectify or at the very least ameliorate. The author did a public service by writing the book. I'm gonna go hug my sons.
