Ever since I realized that you could make pizza at home, I've enjoyed experimenting with different styles and ingredients. So, when I saw that this book was available, I jumped at it. After all, this book probably holds the secrets to amazing pizza...The book itself is sturdy and doesn't come with a dust jacket, which I appreciated. In my kitchen, dust jackets end up torn and smudged because my cookbooks sit right on the counter where I'm cooking. The book includes sections on the science of pizza making and the importance of quality ingredients. That's about where the book lost me. There wasn't a single recipe in this book that I could try with the ingredients on hand. In fact, quite a few ingredients would have had to been custom ordered online because they're not ones that the average grocery store even carries. Did I mention that he insists you only cook on pizza stones and not one, but two and use a peel to move the pizzas in and out of the oven? For what it would have cost me to attempt a single recipe, I could have ordered pizza for my family multiple times. So, here's my recommendation...if you want to become a professional pizza chef or have the time (the dough recipe alone takes three days!) and the money to experiment, absolutely buy this book. You're going to love it. If you're a busy mom just looking for some new ideas for pizza night, this book isn't for you.

In 2011, I took a wonderful pizza making class in New York City's Little Italy, and I've been making decent pizza at home since then. However, after 5 years, I found I wasn't getting any better at stretching out my pizza dough, and the quality of my pizza dough itself wasn't always consistent. Frustrated, I took The Pizza Bible out of the library and was immediately attracted to the lush pictures of every type of pizza I'd ever heard of and some that I hadn't, (St. Louis style? Cincinnati Red?) I was a little put off by some of the writing. As 11-time World Pizza Champ, there are at least 11 recipe intros of pizza making heroism that I originally found a bit over the top. In any case, I decided that my pizza making wasn't going to get any better on it's own and I purchased the book.Tony states that professional grade, high gluten flour along with diastatic malt powder are essential to amazing pizza dough. So I held off awhile because that was annoying. I could find a bunch of the kind of flours called for on Amazon, as well as the malt powder, but they weren't all on Amazon Prime and I didn't want to have pay shipping on 4 different 5 pound bags of flour. However, on Tony's website,[...], Tony sells sample packs of assorted flours and throws in a small packet of the malt powder. The person I contacted there was super helpful and accommodating and I placed my order. Then I made a batch of the Master Recipe dough, which Tony gives as a sort of lesson for your first attempt. It took 3 days, but I could tell right away it was different from my old dough recipe. It was lighter, bubblier, softer and stickier. On the third day I barely needed to stretch it- I was able to softly press it to the correct size in a minute or two. Then there was the taste. You know people say "it's even better than what you can get in a restaurant?" but it never really is? THIS IS! Seriously- my 8 year old noticed! My husband, who thought the whole need for me to order 15 pounds of flour through the mail was a scam, literally ate his words. Not only was the crust tender and delicate, the flavor was incredible! Nuanced! I made something with nuances!! I right away emailed the nice man who helped me choose flours from Tony's shop to thank him, and he told me that once I graduate the next step, which is the dough using the starters, it will make it even better. I can't imagine. I can't wait.If you want to make great pizza, get this book. Yes, you will need to order special ingredients and buy special supplies. You will need to invest time and refrigerator space. Suck it up! It's worth it!

I've been making pizza for about 20 years, with pretty good success (at least, that's what my family and guests have told me). Recently, I bought Ken Forkish's "The Elements of Pizza" in the hopes of taking my pizza skills to a new level. Shortly after, I bumped into "The Pizza Bible," and bought that too. I learned a lot from both this and the Forkish book, but this one is my hands-down favorite of the two. Gemignani tells you in the clearest fashion, WHY he does things the way he does them. That gives you a deeper understanding of what you are doing, helps you figure out precisely what he's telling you to do, and gives you the confidence to experiment with shortcuts or other modifications. This stands in sharp contrast to Forkish, who often tells you what to do but not why, and when the instructions are less than transparent (e.g., Forkish's description of how to ball the dough), it's impossible to figure out what he means. Another major contrast between Gemignani's book and Forkish's book is that Gemignani is very efficient - he doesn't repeat himself much. He gives you lots of details in the "Master Class" section of the book, and subsequently he gives briefer instructions, on the assumption that you learned something from executing the class. In contrast, Forkish is highly redundant, repeating many of the instructions in every recipe. You could probably distill Forkish's book into one that is half as long. Gemignani provides a comprehensive tour of many different pizza styles, with a couple of recipes for each style. So, why do I say, don't make this your first book? The problem here is that Gemignani is a craftsman, and he wants every reader to be a craftsman. (His motto is, "Respect the Craft.") That means pizza doughs that take 3-5 days to concoct, and having not one pizza stone, but two, and having both a large and small-volume digital scale. And it's true, all this craftsmanship does make for a better pizza. But even without a single digital scale, and with only one stone, and using a recipe with a dough rise-time of only a couple of hours, you can still make a pizza that will be competitive with most national chain high-quality pizzerias, and will simply whip the pants off a low-quality chain like Pizza Hut. Yes, your pizzas may sometimes be shaped a like Australia (or worse, Africa), and in a side-by-side taste test your 2-hour dough won't be as good as a 3-day dough, but they will still be great. Also, there are a lot of great pizza topping possibilities that involve only a few ingredients, yet you might not think of yourself. A beginner will benefit from a book that provides a lot of suggestions (like red onion, potato, pancetta, and fontina!). The recipes here - while terrific - are extremely esoteric, complex, and often reference obscure artisan brands, which will be either tough to obtain, or it will be impossible to know what would be an appropriate substitute. Start with a book like Evan Kleiman's "Angeli Caffe Pizza Pasta Panini" (out of print, but still available, last time I checked), which gives you a simple dough and a lot of recipes. Fall in love with making your own pizza, then graduate to this book.

It took me a few weeks to get through the book. It appeared to drag at times as McCormack didn't really keep my attention very well the first half of the book. When he got to the story of his 2010 Ironman win, I did find it captivating, and I finished the second half of the book over two evenings. McCormack has a well-documented reputation for being cocky and over-confident, and he tries to explain it in the book as his "strategy" to get into the heads of his competition. While that may be the case, the way that he documents his life and tells his story certainly lead me to the conclusion that its not a strategy, its who he is. I took away some points he made with regards to nutrition during Ironman distance events, but otherwise, I thought it was simply an 'Average' read. He is a great competitor, not so much as a writer.

I'm new to the world of Triathlon and had heard of Chris McCormack through his reputation as being one of the most amazing, record breaking athletes to walk planet earth so that's what drove me to read his story. The writing is much like the athlete. It starts off as bombastic, ego filled with a lingering tactical intention behind every word. Then as you pass through his tactics and the mind games he plays on his opponents, you reach a deep philosophical center.Macca made me a fan when he talked about athletes who skip the growth process by using performance enhancing drugs in their obsession to gain a greater result. Never have I read such an introspective stance on the issue of drug use in professional sports. His insights are the result of years of racing at the highest level and should be a must read for anyone who hopes to compete in this sport.

I am a triathlete or at least a wanna be. I'm an age grouper and I started as a bottom 10% finisher. I am now finishing around 50%, but more like top 25-30% on the bike. I'm generally slow, but anyway...This book was awesome. It is an inspiring story and educational if you want to learn about triathlon training. It's not a training guide, but if you have ever trained for a big race you will be able to relate to this story, GUARANTEED!!!GREAT BOOK!!! I knew nothing about Macca before reading this book and I have way more respect for the guy now!!!!

True champion. Arrogant as, exactly what I'd expect from a winner and this guys is one. Super read about his journey to the top via a couple of detours. My take away was that commitment sometime isn't enough, if the focus is missing.

Interesting if you want to know about a great triathlete. It's a fast read that gives the reader some insight in to Chris's life. He seems to think he is psychologically superior to most other athletes when in reality, most of the professional athletes probably just yawn and take Chris for the mouthpiece he is. Having said that, most of the book is about the life and times sprinkled with a few gems of race info that I found very interesting. Love him or hate him, he is damned individualistic and confident and I am sure those qualities make him the mentally tough competitor that he is.

Inspirational, motivational, and unconventional describes Chris's story. I've read this 3 times, and bought the audio book, which I plan on listening to over and over. Chris's story is entertaining, moving, and down to earth. How he accomplished his achievements is unique and should be shared with anyone who wants to set and achieve a goal. Chris is a story teller, and has a great story to tell! Thanks for sharing, Macca!

I enjoyed the early part of this book, learning what makes Macca tick, why he's big on smack talk. But as the book went on there was a never ending stream of arrogant boasting stories of his accomplishments and harassing of other athletes. I had to give up about half way through the book. Its among the worse books of the genre. Ironwar is the same book but done VERY well. Go look there for what this book promises.

Totally awesome book! First time I ever seen Macca was on a Wheaties box. His grinning face was on our breakfast table for over a year. Don't know why they're doing the old Mary Lou Retton, Bruce Jenner and Ali boxes nowadays. I want Macca back! This book is a great introduction to triathlons by the greatest triathlete on the planet. What I admire about Chris McCormack is his honesty. That's right. He talks about his failures as well as his glories and doesn't sugarcoat his mistakes. The chapter about his mate Sean Maroney's death and later his mother's short fight with breast cancer was a real tearjerker. But he was able to persevere and dedicate his first Ironman World championship to them. This book is more than a book about athletes, but a treatise on life experiences. Since I'm writing a novel with a triathlete as the male main character, I found this book invaluable with diving into the mind of a world class athlete. My character had doubts about his biking ability. His father was an Olympic swimmer and his mother an Olympic sprinter. Yet he was a big man. Although before I read this book, I didn't know 175 lbs is considered heavy. My guy is 6'2" and 179 lbs. His girlfriend encouraged him to attack on the bike and he'd been training with uphill mountain biking and sprints to build is leg power. He'd always been confident about his marathon abilities, so hanging back on the bike had been his biggest obstacle. All this was written before I came across Chris McCormack's book. Imagine my surprise when Chris outlined the exact strategy for my character to win. Obviously my character made mistakes such as attacking on the uphill close to the summit and losing it when he almost fell on the downhill [I mean, in fiction you have to pull out the bunny rabbit ran across the road moment], but Macca's descriptions of his races helped me with the realism of my race scene. My editor may still cut it out, but at least I enjoyed writing it, and I am going to cheer for Macca to beat Crowie for the 2012 Ironman World Champion. At the end of the book, Chris talks about honesty and not cheating. I immediately thought of Lance Armstrong and John Locke. What good is temporary glory when it is bought off the back of underhanded methods? I'm really glad he tackled this taboo topic, because at the end of the day, each person has to look inside themselves and like what they see.I also love the relationship Chris has with his wife, Emma-Jane. Theirs is an undying love, close friendship and emotional consideration that all romance novels aim to achieve.Macca said if you're too focused on the results and not on the process you'll burn out. The same can be said for writing. Enjoy and love the journey and savor the destination, but never cheat or take shortcuts.

About the Author

Cal Ripken, Jr., is baseball’s all-time Iron Man. He retired from baseball in October 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. His name appears in the record books repeatedly, most notably as one of only eight players in history to record more than 400 home runs and 3,000 hits. In 1995, Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played (2,130) and voluntarily ended his streak in 1998 after playing in a world-record 2,632 consecutive games. Among his other on-field accolades are American League Rookie of the Year (1982), two-time American League Most Valuable Player (1983, 1991), two-time Gold Glove recipient (1991, 1992), two-time All-Star Game MVP (1991, 2001), and 19 All-Star Game selections. He also was named to Major League Baseball’s All-Century Team in 1999. Ripken has made a tremendous impact on the sport and on fans everywhere. In 1999, Babe Ruth League, Inc., changed the name of its largest division (5- to 12-year-olds) from Bambino to Cal Ripken Baseball. Currently, more than 700,000 youths play Cal Ripken Baseball worldwide. He is using the platform that baseball has provided him to construct a baseball complex in his hometown of Aberdeen, Maryland. The one-of-a-kind facility consists of Ripken Stadium, a state-of-the-art 6,000-seat minor league ballpark that is home to the hugely successful Class A Aberdeen IronBirds. Adjacent to the minor league ballpark is the Ripken Youth Baseball Academy, consisting of eight youth fields, including a youth-sized replica of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a synthetic training infield, a bullpen area, and batting cages. Ripken resides in Maryland with his wife, Kelly, and their children, Rachel and Ryan. Bill Ripken, a 12-year Major League veteran, began his career with the Baltimore Orioles in 1987 under the direction of his father, Cal Ripken, Sr., and alongside brother Cal Ripken, Jr. This was the first and remains the only time in Major League Baseball history that a father simultaneously managed two of his sons. After five and a half seasons with the Orioles, Ripken, who would later return to Baltimore for a year, played for Texas, Cleveland, and Detroit. In 1988, he was second among American League second basemen in double plays turned (100). At the plate, Ripken led the Baltimore Orioles in hitting with a .291 average and 28 doubles in 1990. Ripken, a second baseman by trade, had a fielding percentage of .9927 in 1992, the best of any Major League second baseman that season, and his career fielding percentage at second base (.987) ranks among baseball’s all-time leaders. Ripken was voted by his peers as one of the players most likely to manage a big league team. Ripken is the co-owner and executive vice president of Ripken Baseball Inc., a baseball sales and marketing company founded in 1999 and based in Baltimore. Ripken is involved in all aspects of the business and regularly instructs at youth camps and coaching clinics. Through his work with these programs, he has become recognized as one of America’s premiere baseball instructors. Ripken also is involved in the continued development of the Ripken Academy in Aberdeen, Maryland, and the management of Ripken Baseball’s minor league teams in Aberdeen and Augusta, Georgia. Ripken lives in Fallston, Maryland, with his wife, Candace, and his children, Miranda, Anna, Reese, and Jack. Scott Lowe joined Ripken Baseball in 1999 after eight years working in college sports publicity. Lowe initially served as the general manager of the company’s camps and clinics division, developing Ripken Baseball’s youth camps, coaching clinics, and other instructional programs. Presently he writes and designs Ripken Baseball’s Coach’s Clipboard e-newsletter, which is distributed to amateur baseball coaches around the world on a monthly basis. He also oversees the creation and distribution of Ripken Baseball instructional products and is involved in the development and implementation of the company’s coaching education and other baseball instructional programs. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Maryland College of Journalism in 1991, Lowe spent two years as an athletic communications assistant at Princeton University. He was the assistant director of sports information and served as the athletics marketing coordinator at Drexel University in Philadelphia from 1993 to 1995 before returning to the Baltimore area to become the assistant director of athletic communications at Loyola College. Lowe served in that capacity before being promoted to the position of head sports information director in 1997. Lowe left Loyola in 1998 to form his own baseball camp business prior to joining Ripken Baseball in September 1999. In addition to his full-time position at Ripken Baseball, he has served for three years as the head coach of varsity baseball at the Park School in Baltimore, compiling a 45–19 record and leading the Bruins to three consecutive MIAA B Conference playoff appearances, including a trip to the 2006 championship game, after the school had failed to reach the postseason the previous seven years. Lowe resides in Owings Mills, Maryland, with his wife, Robin, and children, Devin and Sydney.

This is a very nice book that can help parents, new coaches and even many that call themselves coaches, but all they do is throw pitches and hit balls to players. I played for over 35 years and now becoming recreational coach. The first part of the book helps you understand your duty as a coach and be a better communicator to avoid future misunderstandings with parents, children, umpires, etc. The second part a large number of drills and fun games that will certainly keep children engaged. In my baseball experience I never did most of them, but I can see that this book will help me succeed as a coach. I strongly recommend Parents, every coach or wanna be coach to read this. I have helped coaches for the last 4 or 5 years, and I can tell you neither one of them read this book. I can understand why my kids don't love the game as much as I do. The reward you get after reading it completely justify the few bucks you spent. I am a parent as many of you reading this. I have a full time job, and as many of you sometimes I don't want to drag everything and drive to the field to play a bit of baseball with the kid(s). There is many things you can try and do in your own backyard after reading this book. Parents, give it a try with your young children. They will have fun and may like the sport. Now, I know my kids will have a second chance, but primarily it will be their decision, I will just show them the way as well as my new pupils. Something I learned while reading. I can't forced them to be what I wanted for me.

I have coached baseball from tee ball to high school varsity, and this book is by far the most comprehensive, easy-to-read, practical book on coaching baseball that I have seen. The drills and organization tools make practice planning simple. The Ripken Way emphasizes FUN and keeping kids engaged in a game that requires a lot of patience and attention. The drills are broken down by age-appropriateness in a way that makes this book useful for coaches of all levels.

Very well written book on coaching baseball for all ages. I read this book to get more informed on how to coach 5-6 year old T-Ball. This book provided a very good framework for this age group. Many well timed photographs used to describe practice drills.Table of contentsPart 11 Responsibilities of Coaching2 Realities of Coaching3 Reasonable Expectations4 Baseball Practice BasicsPart 25 Hitting and Baserunning Drills6 Throwing and Pitching Drills7 Fielding drillsPart 3Practice Planner8 Practice Particulars for Ages 4 to 69 Practice Particulars for Ages 7 to 910 Practice Particulars for Ages 10 to 1211 Practice particulars for Ages 13 to 1412 Practice Particulars for Ages 15+Favorite parts of the book:Page 6As coaches, we need to be able to cater to the needs of the kid who can't catch one ball and still make baseball fun and exciting for the kid who can. It's a difficult balance but one that's important to understand at all levels.

If you are looking for a way to ensure you are teaching the correct skills and at the same time making baseball practice lively, this is the book. The Ripkens are, obviously, well qualified to talk about baseball, but I was surprised at the wisdom, perspective, and pace of the book. First things, as they say, first. This is not a book that you get if you want to be a crazy baseball dad or mom -- this is the book you get if you want to be able to teach and explain the workings of baseball in an interesting way. Can't recommend this book highly enough.I was in something of a rush and bought this book on the Kindle (which I love). Since it is a reference work, however, in retrospect the hard copy might have made more sense. I do a lot of flipping back and forth in the kindle, and bookmarks are okay, but right yet I don't think the Kindle software is nearly as efficient. Still, no gripes or regrets about this purchase -- I might just have to buy the hard copy as well.

We think anyone who coaches young baseball players should read and use this book. One of Cal and Bill Ripken's biggest goals is to get young players to LOVE THE GAME and have fun! We originally picked this book because it is written by the Ripkens (and we think Cal Ripken is one of the best ballplayers of all time!)The book is not just a list of drills but they also take time to discuss coaching responsibilities and philosophies and reasonable expectations. They include great ideas for practices and how to run games at the younger levels - we wish this book was required reading for ALL volunteer youth baseball coaches. Drills included are several for Hitting and Baserunning, Throwing and Pitching, and Fielding. The best part of the book is the Practice Planner, where they go over Practice Particulars for each age group (4-6, 7-9, 10-12, etc.) They also tell you what skills you should be teaching kids at what age level. I was amazed at the "basics" that my 8 year old son hasn't learned yet. The Ripkens want kids to learn and have fun doing it so they love the game.We found ourselves agreeing with everything the Ripkens had to say and we will be using the rest of the spring/summer to "backyard coach" our 5 year old, 8 year old and 10 year old daughter now that baseball is over for the year - keeping it fun, of course! We would love for our children to go to one of the Ripkens' baseball camps, but this book will have to suffice.

I read a lot of reviews about the code not working, well mine did......If you are looking to pass the 1st tier with a score of 50 on the Spanish CLEP, get this book as opposed to the official CLEP guide if only because it comes with 2 practice tests. If you are looking to get a 63 or above, all I can say is you better have a good background in Spanish.I studied spanish off and on for about 6 months knowing I would need to eventually take this test (I chose Spanish because I thought it would be easy and the university didn't have a Russian program and therefore I couldn't test out of that). I started really putting the nose to the grindstone about a month before the actual clep test. If you ONLY need a 50, get this book and take the first test and see why you are failing while keeping in mind, THIS BOOK IS NOT MEANT TO BE A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE it can only show where you are weak. I would recommend listening to the listening and rejoinders quite a few times, BUT don't make this your only source of audio study; believe me because I relied heavily on the audio included with the practice tests and I could hardly understand the audio part of the test; the test may have some speakers that speak like some Spanish speakers hyped up on caffeine. I used this book in conjunction with Duolingo and a crap ton of translating on SpanishDict.com and only got a 55. If you want a 63 I would recommend 1. longer intensive study than 1 month 2. don't buy a college text book because they kind of suck and seem to follow some NEW AGE educational doctrine bull crap with more visual eye candy than actual hard core knowledge. 3. Learn a LOT of verbs and ALL of their conjugations including when to use imperfect, preterite, subjunctive, infinitve, etc. 4. learn the word "obras" because it seemed to be used a lot in my version of the test. 5. Did I mention learn verb conjugation? Well also learn indicative vs subjunctive vs imperfect vs...... spanish has a lot of verb tenses and conjugations.Just to give an idea of how hard I studied. It was at least 8 hours per day on weekends and 4-5 hours a day after work during the week about a month before the test. I had 1 year of Spanish in high school back in 2003. The result: I only got a 55. Your results will obviously vary depending on your dedication, experience, and aptitude.

This book was very helpful for reviewing certain aspects of the Spanish language. As long as you do each drill slowly and methodically in addition to the practice tests, you will succeed. I got one point above the score I needed to get 8 credits at the University of Arizona.Be warned: This book comes with an access code for REA study center. In the description, it says that you get two free practice tests and a free MP3 download for listening. You DO NOT get the MP3 download. If you need listening practice, go to https://www.laits.utexas.edu/spe/index.html. It was very helpful for me.

Bought it for my wife who was taking the Spanish clep. As she speaks spanish at about 70% proficiency, she needed to brush up. She studied about 3 days and did very well on the test. According to her, most of the questions were similar to those in the practice sections of this book.

Purchased this Kindle book a couple days ago to gain access to the practice test and study material online. I found the access code towards the back of the book and the code is for access to rea.com, but once I registered and entered the code I got: The code you entered entitles you to purchase the online diagnostic and study materials at a reduced price of $1.99. not what was advertised but not the end of the world but then the offer is only good for:CLEP Introductory Sociology: Introductory Sociology Package. Contacted Amazon for a refund as the main reason for my purchase was to access CLEP Spanish study materials and test not Sociology.

Can't comment on the information inside but the practice test are good, I think even harder than the actual CLEP test. Spainsh is my first lenguage, Bought this book after reading online from spanish speaking people that the test was hard. I did the practice test and score a 93. Did the CLEP Stest on April 7th and score 78, not bad for someone who always failed Spanish in high school.

I am writing this review on behalf of my boyfriend who used only this text for clep review. My boyfriend is a native Spanish speaker and passed with a high enough score to earn 8 credits of Spanish. The only complaint is that the brand new copy's online access code did not work. But he just chatted online with REA, told them what happened and they provided access. No biggie.Another complaint my boyfriend had after using this text was that the online test allows you to pause and play the audio version. This is not accurate on the actual test. You cannot pause and hit play on the test. You must hear the audio and answer within 10 seconds. So beware of this when taking the online practice tests.Using the practice tests, it predicated that he would score in the mid 70s (High enough to Clep out of 5 Semesters of Spanish). On the actual test he got a 60 (Very disappointing). He says the biggest problem was the audio portion.Hope that helps! Happy Clepping!

The book is definitely a help as I study for my CLEP.The included code for the online exam was the correct one, and the first test gives you a score, as well as areas that you need to work on to get up to speed.A valuable book to me this semester.

This e-book comes with an access code to get two practice exams online. Mine came with the wrong access code...for Sociology instead of Spanish. Now I have to pay $13 if I want the Spanish tests right away instead of the $2 the e-book purchase entitles me to.
