Review

This book provides clear and inspirational hope for anyone with a dyslexic child. Like many excellent books it is written from personal experience. I strongly recommend it. Author: Sian Griffiths, Education Editor, The Sunday TimesThis book shines a light on 23 successful people with dyslexia and demonstrates that having dyslexia should not hold you back from achieving your potential. With the right support and an inner determination, success can be within reach. These personal stories, generously shared, should be inspiring for all who live with dyslexia. Author: Kevin Geeson, former Chief Executive at Dyslexia ActionI would recommend this to people diagnosed with dyslexia and their families. One invaluable message is that perseverance and determination can help people achieve. Another is that talents in the dyslexia profile may be underrated at school but are of tremendous importance to society afterwards. One interesting recurring theme was the importance of parents and the difference they could make in helping their children believe in themselves; more than one said "that costs nothing". Author: Bernadette McLean, Principal of the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre, UKShining through these highly personal accounts of difficult schooldays and the struggle for understanding is an overwhelming sense of optimism. Dyslexia has shaped these personal histories, but has not limited their ambition or ultimate success. For many, the role of parents is a central unifying feature, parents who believed their children could achieve, regardless of academic success, and who provided the confidence and encouragement they needed. This is a book for parents to buy for their young people, to read together and to find inspiration and encouragement, and it also provides a refreshing perspective for those working in education. Author: Dr Teresa Regan CPsychol AFBPsS, Principal Educational Psychologist, Catalyst Psychology Community Interest CompanyIn my experience every person with dyslexia has amazing potential waiting to be untapped. Sadly, this potential is often missed by our exam focussed education system. But once dyslexic people find their passion and talent they can achieve extraordinary things, as this wonderful collection of interviews demonstrates. I hope this book inspires young people, educators and parents to focus on what dyslexic people CAN do, not just what they can't. Author: Kate Griggs, Dyslexia Campaigner (Xtraordinary People) and Founder & CEO of Untap.itThis is a wonderful book. Author: Dr Brock Eide and Dr Fernette Eide, authors of The Dyslexic Advantage: Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic BrainRooke, a writer and columnist in the UK, began to research dyslexia when her daughter was diagnosed at age 13. She found, through talking to physicians and other families, that dyslexia is more of a learning process style than a disorder and that there have been many high achievers (e.g., Albert Einstein, Agatha Christie, Steve Jobs, Steven Spielberg) who were able to learn around their diagnosis. To encourage dyslexic students, their parents, and their teachers, Rooke presents the stories of well-known peoples from the arts, sports, and business world who talk about how dyslexia affected their childhood, how they overcame their problems, and what special strengths they used to succeed in life. VERDICT This book will be an inspiration to all who work with children, especially those with special needs. Author: School Library JournalThe examples in this book show us what dyslexia gives you: perseverance, determination, tenacity, patience, tolerance, empathy, creativity, problem solving skills, bravery, humour and an ability to think differently. Surely all qualities required to be successful in life. My son has all of these attributes in 'bucket loads' and, whilst I am still a long way from believing my son's dyslexia is a blessing, I think a book like this also helps me realise that it is far from a curse. I appear to have a creative, sure to be successful, dyslexic in my life. Author: Louise Heron, mother of Alex HeronThis collection of very personal stories from such high profile dyslexic people brought together in one book will act as an inspiration for those who struggle daily with dyslexia and also as an eye opener to those that don't. It will help them to better understand the impact that a learning difficulty can have on everyday life and the importance of providing appropriate emotional and practical support. Author: Stephen Hall, Chief Executive, Dyslexia ActionThis is an enlightening read...I have read this with a number of pupils with dyslexia, secondary school age, all of whom have either listened to it as it was read, or who have read it with minimal support...each individual was inspired in their own way and it has certainly helped them to look beyond the difficulties they currently experience, to the very real possibilities and opportunities for the future. Author: Claire Hague Source: Patoss Bulletin, Summer 2016, Vol. 29 No. 1

This book is an invaluable resource---and easy read---for anyone who wants to give hope and support to a child with dyslexia, or who seeks to better understand the challenges faced by a partner or colleague. The book celebrates what dyslexics CAN do really well, and provides many useful tips for navigating a world full of words. Although many of the people featured are not well known in the U.S. this won't stop you enjoying the book. In clear, simply told stories, a diverse range of people--a comedian, a dancer, a poet and Virgin's Sir Richard Branson for example--talk about the way they work best, how they learned to overcome challenges at school, and how their challenge can be used as a strength. The book is touching, inspiring and shaming--some of the treatment these people received from peers and teachers is truly shocking. Read it and learn how you can help the dyslexics in your life, and how they can help you. Am I alone in wishing there was a U.S. and an audio version of these powerful testimonies?

Excellent read. Loved it!

If you are looking for a book filled with British Creative Successful dyslexics then this is the one. My students did not know who these people were and therefore were not interested in hearing about these individuals.

Analects, in case you were wondering, are "selected passages from the writings of an author.” I mention this definition here because it seems that the only time we use the term “analects” is when we consider the writings of Confucius. Was there once a larger corpus of writings from Confucius, and is what we have today distilled from some larger body of work? If so, then I wish we had that entire larger body of philosophical work, the same way we have a good many books from classical Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle; but that being said, I certainly am glad that we have the Analects as a distillation of Confucius’ philosophy. His Chinese name was K’ung Fu-tzu, 孔夫子, and the Latinate name that he bears today was probably bestowed by Jesuit missionaries to China in the 16th century. By any name, however, Confucius is a great philosopher who speaks to us today just as clearly as he spoke to the people of Chinese antiquity. He lived a long time ago – when he died in 479 B.C., the Spartan defense of Thermopylae had taken place just one year before – but it is astonishing how current and relevant his words and ideas remain.“Analects” is, of course, a Latin- and Greek-derived term; in Chinese, the book is 論語,the "Lun Yü." It is divided into 20 books, and contains a total of 512 Confucian sayings, most of them quite short. On this re-reading of "The Analects," I encountered some sayings that were already familiar to me: e.g., “To say you know when you know, and to say you do not when you do not, that is knowledge” (II.17, p. 65). Yet on this reading, I learned many things that I found new.Perhaps because I’ve been reading a good deal of classical Greek philosophy lately, I found some striking parallels between Confucius and the Greeks who wrote sometime after him. For instance, when “The Master said, ‘Barbarian tribes with their rulers are inferior to Chinese states without them’” (III.5, p. 67), it made me think of how the ancient Greeks considered any non-Greek-speaking society to be βάρβαροι, barbaroi, barbarians. I found myself thinking of the doomed tragic heroes of ancient Greek drama, men and women brought down by their tragic flaws, when I heard Confucius reflect that “In his errors a man is true to type. Observe the errors and you will know the man” (IV.7, p. 73).Confucius knows that his disciples aspire to government service in the bureaucracy of the Empire – hence the prevalence of sayings in which Columbus offers advice such as, “Do not worry because you have no official position. Worry about your qualifications. Do not worry because no one appreciates your abilities. Seek to be worthy of appreciation” (IV.14, p. 74),Additionally, in an acutely status-conscious society, Confucius’ listeners are very interested in what will help them achieve the distinction of “gentleman.” With considerable focus on the value of benevolence, Confucius suggests that “The gentleman understands what is moral. The small man understands what is profitable” (IV.16, p. 74). And in one of my favorite passages from the Analects, Confucius remarks that “the gentleman hates to dwell downstream for it is there that all that is sordid in the Empire finds its way” (XIX.20, p. 155).Readers who are interested in the Judeo-Christian philosophical and moral tradition may be struck by the ways in which Confucius disagrees with one of the primary moral imperatives of Christianity. In contrast with Lao Tzu, who in the "Tao Te Ching" tells his disciples to “do good to him who has done you an injury”, Confucius says, “What, then, do you repay a good turn with? You repay an injury with straightness, but you repay a good turn with a good turn” (XIV.34, p. 129). In other words, the only thing you owe to someone who has wronged you is straightness, directness, honesty. For Western readers, many of whom have been raised in the tradition of “whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also” (Matthew 5:39), this may be the most challenging passage in the entire "Analects."At the same time, Confucianism invokes the Golden Rule in a way similar to all the other great moral, philosophical, and religious systems of the world. In response to a disciple’s asking, “Is there a single word which can be a guide to conduct throughout one’s life?”, Confucius replies, “Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire” (XV.24, p. 135).Perhaps because it is the dawn of a presidential election year here in the United States of America, I found that I was particularly interested in one particular example of Confucius’ advice to his disciples: “Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is disliked by the multitude. Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is liked by the multitude” (XV.28, p. 136). Good advice in the state of Lu during the Zhou dynasty, and good advice in any modern nation nowadays.I had this edition of "The Analects" with me when my wife and I were traveling in Beijing, home of the second largest Confucian temple in the world. Walking in the Forbidden City, my copy of "The Analects" in my jacket pocket, I wondered how many readers, imperial or otherwise, referred to their own copy of this book while traveling between and among the buildings of this most impressive city-within-a-city.This edition of "The Analects" includes a glossary of names and places mentioned in the book, an appendix on events in the life of Confucius, a textual history of the book, and a chronology of Confucius’ life. Particularly helpful is another appendix, one that describes the characters of the different disciples with whom Confucius speaks in the Analects. For readers of Confucius’ time, and indeed for followers of Confucianism nowadays, the differences in character among disciples like Tzu-kung, Tzu-lu, and Yen Yüan would be as self-evident as the differences in personality that Christians see among Saint Peter, Saint John, and Saint Thomas in the New Testament. This Penguin Books edition of Confucius’ "Analects" is a very fine way to acquaint, or reacquaint, oneself with one of the most important books ever written.

I own the Oxford World's Classics edition translated by Raymond Dawson. This was my first reading of 'The Analects' and while it was not quite what I expected, as it does not contain a truly coherent philosophy or even a consistent mode of presentation or authorship, it was nevertheless an incredibly rewarding study. And I say study rather than read because while it is quite brief (82 pages) there are a wealth of "chapters" that will leave you pondering--in a good way! If you are worried about the stereotype of vaguess and aloofness in Chinese sages, you needn't fear 'The Analects'. The main thing that can obscure some of the "chapters" is their reliance on Chinese history and most of these are briefly cleared up in Dawon's notes. 'The Analects' can be picked up and put down at a whim due to the informal structure and you will never feel that you lost the flow of it should a few days pass between readings. While I can't compare it to another translation or the Chinese, I found Dawson's translation to be very smooth and highly consistent throughout, and he supplements the introduction with helpful notes on his translation of key terms. This is an edition primarily for the newcomer rather than the scholar (not to say it is in anyway "dumbed down") as it is wonderfully concise in its introduction and notes, never saying more than needs to be said. However, in my case, I certainly wouldn't have minded more scholarship and context. Dawson uses Pinyin rather than Wade-Giles, which is a welcome shift in my eyes, as Wade-Giles often feels overwrought even if it sometimes comes closer to the true pronunciation, and there is a nifty conversion chart included in this edition. This edition like all of the newer Oxford World's Classics is neatly designed with a beautiful cover and good quality paper.

Confucius - The Analects is a rather intriguing book since it aims to tackle information regarding the well known Confucius in a cogent manner. The book is laid out in a fairly straight forward approach with no frills that's an extremely quick read.Within the introductory section, there is some background material featured, while a tad later on the book features notes on particular translations that the book offers. Knowing how complex translations can be, it's a well-thought out approach to delineate what the book means by each translated term, instead of assuming that the reader will know. Not only that, but also, certain words have various meanings, so to be able to narrow down with precision what was stated is greatly appreciated. For individuals seeking veritable gems of Confucius, this book has dozens of them.Reading this book will certainly help the individual realize how the culture was at the time, and why the information presented here was so vital to the upbringing and society in ancient China. The totality of the book is seamlessly interwoven to give you everything you need for comprehension, while not an iota more. This certainly helps since other books can be longwinded at times.Taking all into account the book definitely belongs in the libraries of individuals who value such knowledge with resounding depth. Confucius was definitely a master of his craft, and this book exemplifies that quite trenchantly.

I was looking for a book to provide me with a broad perspective on the internet. This book met my needs. The author has had a long and deep involvement with the international public and private entities that created and oversee the internet. As the author notes, the foundation of the internet at its creation, not too many decades ago, was trust. The engineers and technologists who built the internet trusted each other so trust is in the DNA of the internet. Obviously, trust is now in short supply; hence, the book is entitled "The Darkening Web."If you're interested in why its darkening, Alexander Klimburg will give you the reasons. The hardware, the software, telecoms providers, governance of the internet, and great power politics all play substantial roles in the difficulties inherent in maintaining and sustaining the internet. It's a wonderful resource, but preserving this resource is threatened by powerful competing interests. The author sharply criticizes the U. S. for its efforts to dominate and control the internet. The Snowden disclosures gravely damaged much of the international trust in America's oversight and use of the internet for national purposes. He also devotes major sections of the book to Russia;s and China's efforts to seize control of the internet for their national purposes. One Chinese undertaking that the author discusses, which I had not previously heard, seeks to create what amounts to a credit card score for its citizens use of the internet. Go to Chines government websites and your point score goes up; go to Chinese government disfavored websites and your score goes down, way down. Post a favorable comment about the government and your score rises; online criticism of the government gravely damages a citizen's score. It's like a rewards program. A good score will result in perks from the government; a bad score and you don't get to make that special trip to Shanghai. A diabolical approach that may prove quite effective, in my opinion. The book considers cyber power. It looks at the efforts by powers, other than great powers, to pursue effort to project power over the internet. Israel, Iran, and North Korea have all sought to do so. Some of the attraction of the cyber battlefield is the attribution problem. A given event occurs and it's not always clear what state or non-state actor to attribute the cause. The presence of criminal elements who may be allowed by foreign states, Russia and China, in particular, to pursue acts on the internet that advance national goals without the direct involvement of clearly identified national agencies further complicates the attribution problem. The author discusses terminology - whether to use the term "cybersecurity" or "data security.' He prefers "data security." Terminology affects the competing visions for the internet between the Free Internet group with the U.S. and Europe as advocates and the Sovereign Internet group led by Russia and China. I found this enlightening. Can you be secure on the internet? The answer that I came away with was a resounding "no". But I enjoyed the 370 pages of the book and, if the topic interests you, I recommend it.

Having read Griffith & Klimburg's book "The Darkening Web - The War for Cyberspace", I have the following thoughts: 1.) Given what they write about happening in the '80's, 90's and Millennium that I had no idea about, it seems clear that no matter how much I read, I have really no idea about what is actually happening right now. 2.) As we attach more things online thus becoming more imperiled and exposed, the world wide web is likely to fracture into country-centered disintegrated internets in an attempt to protect users within these discrete internets, each under a government's control. The author advocates for the existing "multi-stakeholder model", but in the end I think fear will overcome trust and the current world wide web will break up. For most of us it won't matter personally in how we use the web, but the government will be putting digital fences around what it's alright for us to see... actually (or ostensibly) for our own protection.

Excellent book. If someone really want to know about "cyber-wars" should read this book, extensively documented.

excellent read

This features the internet role in international politics, effect on democracy, internet management, origins, as DoD Arpanet, and history of founders and hackers. Massively researched, showing a breadth of knowledge, the book presents a broad overview lacking detail. It's meta data on internet management, security and protocols. It touches on the current issue of Russian intervention in the US presidential election. Policy considerations emphasize tension between offense and defense along with NSA collecting but not using information on citizens. Though denying emphasis on security, the book serves as a primer on cyberwarfare. There is informative on programs like Echelon and Prism and history of hacking and hackers as well as more altruistic developers like Jan Postel. I was surprised to learn that RSA was hacked in 2011, along with other examples. There is a good introduction to attempts at legislative control and international agreements like the Helsinki accords of 1975. After a history of origins and development of the internet, there is in-depth discussion of the major players in cyberwarfare in the United States, Russia, and China. Klimburg then gives his vision and fears for the future of cyberspace security, effect on society and as a vehicle of political and military conflict. Policy and theory gets more abstract than practical.Klimburg says that up to now pretty much anything goes. Those days may be coming to an end, as governments and corporations seek to control the internet, both to monitor the behavior of users and for state propaganda. He divides considerations into components: internet security, economic development and crime and Internet governance, resulting in three different focus areas of data security, cyberspace, and governance. He sees an overemphasis on data security at the expense of the social components. Interesting is the Orwellian social credit score, proposed by some members of the Chinese government. He contrasts American fondness for freedom of internet usage versus Russian and Chinese attempts at censorship and control. He contrasts the naive philosophy of Obama democracy spreading to the more realistic use by Vladimir Putin. US emphasis is on offensive Internet strategy, an extension of Obama administration emphasis on war on the ground at the expense of missile defense.Russian interference in the recent US election was caused in part by fears of US history of regime change and internet promotion of Arab Spring. Klimburg contends that the West doesn't understand Russian aggressive attitude on the Internet, that may be because other nations are ignorant of Russia’s own burden of cyberattacks from Ukraine, among other enemies. The West has eroded the trust that is the foundation of the free Internet by engaging in indiscriminate surveillance activities, such as some of those enacted by the NSA and disclosed in 2013 by Edward Snowden. The first cyberattack on critical infrastructure occurred in 1981/82 when the CIA tricked the KGB into stealing Western pipeline technology that had been programmed to turn malicious at a certain point. Critical infrastructure, power grids, banking data, etc. will be subject to cyber attack.Klimburg speculates on how the Internet will develop over the coming years as he asks whether it will remain “free and open” or be controlled by the state. He cites two international factions the Cyber-sovereignty bloc, led by Russia and China, versus free internet adherents in the West. The United States holds that the internet is a non-state domain, while nations like Russia, China, India, Brazil and much of the developing world are moving to restrict online freedom. The “great cyber game” may result in criminality and illegality corrupting the free internet. It's sometimes hard to separate futuristic speculation from reality. The epilogue aggrandizes the internet to a struggle for the soul of democracy. Ultimately, Klimburg concludes, the battle for a free Internet “is nothing less than the struggle for the heart of modern democratic society”. He doesn't compare internet significance to finance and war or to environment, population growth and poverty. The book needs organization diagrams as well as an acronym list and glossary.

We think of attacks by nation states as something like taking down our power grid. There are more serious issues to understand. For example creating events that lead governments to take control of the Domain Name Registries allowing complete control of what you see on the Internet and complete loss of privacy by knowing what you look at on the Internet.

I bought this book as a gift. I haven't read it. I read quite a lengthy review in the Wall Street Journal and thought of someone who would hopefully enjoy it.I'll evaluate the article in the WSJ. Since I didn't read the book. I was very impressed with it.

I've never gone through anything more challenging than caring for someone I love with dementia. I had an opportunity to hear David Troxel in person at the Central Ca Women's Conf a few years ago. His experience in the industry of Alzheimer care is incredibly insightful & helpful to those he has taught on the subject.I'll forever be grateful for his words of encouragement, hope & insights into the world of Alz a form of dementia. This book will give you the emotional tools you need to handle the overwhelming & unimaginable experiences that come your way thru this challenge by reminding us of human dignity & the approach that's so easy to grasp because it's exactly how we hope to be treated if we are diagnosed with a form of dementia.I don't think David Troxel mentions it in this book, but at the conference you find out that he had both his parents diagnosed with Alz, so while he has been in the industry for over 30 years he is also personally acquainted with having a loved one diagnosed with dementia.Give yourself the emotional tools you need by reading this book!

My mom has moderate stage Alzheimers and it's been tough. This book really gave me some insight into the disease itself and also some tools on how I can better communicate and interact with her. Instead of being sad and missing the mother I always knew, I'm redefining my relationship with her which has helped us both. Additionally, the book offers some great resources which we've already tapped into.

Don't know where to start with Mom or Dad? Try this great read on. Consider that being loved, having dignity, and knowing they will be remembered is where life resonates for an elder. This quick read creates an awareness around how to be loving, provide dignity, and supporting recall of a life well lived. Find resources, perspectives, and support context for turning sadness and fear into connection and vitality.

Very usable information and does a good job of explaining the role change that must take place to build the therapeutic relationship between the patient with dementia and their loved one and/or care provider. I recommend this book to all people who work with persons with dementia.

I have the original publication which tells the Alzheimer story frankly...including thoughts from the victim about their fears in the early stages. A nurse friend recommended it to me when I was unsure of how to interact with my sister-in-law...it gave me priceless insight. If you have a loved one trying to cope with the changes in their life (& yours) it will help you both. I've given copies of both the new & original book to many friends.

I highly recommend this book for caregivers of people with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. This have given me lots of help in managing in a respectful and caring manner our family member with memory issues..

Good ideas for care givers, gave me a lot of ideas on how to engage with my father. Ex. Instead of asking where he went on vacation, feed him questions like did you enjoy the beach? It's allowed me to have more meaningful conversations with my dad. Reading the book gave me peace with his reduced abilities. I really liked the suggestions for how to prepare memory books for home care.

Great information just had family member diag. With vascular dementia.

I really don't like to read. I believe I've had ADD since childhood. However, I'm halfway through it in just a couple of days. I read a little each night. I can't wait to get to the end. Awesome story so far Uncle Bill; thanks for getting me on track reading as it helps me escape daily life as I journey with you while reading your amazing book.Ps. I still have the flags, letter and money you sent me in the late 60s from Vietnam.Jeff Mueller

I'm not at all surprised that all the reviews so far are five stars. I seriously DID NOT want to put this book down. I got upset when I had to leave for some commitments over the two days I spent reading it, and I was late for most of them because I wanted to keep reading it. This book is an emotional rollercoaster! I still shake my head at how randomly he ended up in the business that truly changed his life, and just his traveling alone would have made for a great book with the endless supply of unique travel tales. But throw in a good (and way too dramatic!) love story, and I now wish I could find many more books like that to read. I hope he writes more. I just read his bio and it says he's writing full time now. I'll be the first in line to buy the next one!

Enjoyed reading Rendezvous Tahiti! As a Vietnam Vet returning to a changing world and trying to find his path in life. I was captivated by the descriptions of the places Mr. Stephan went to in his travels as a International Tour Director. The love and adventure keeps it exciting right to the very end. A must read!

GREAT BOOK

The book cover was the lure to reading this book, plus I fancied a literary trip to Tahiti as the weather in my area has been so bad this Summer. These are William Stephan’s narratives from 6 continents although the Polynesian Islands – and Tahiti in particular – are clearly where his heart lies. The memoir starts at the point of his return from Saigon in the late 1960s, where he had spent many a night atop his lodgings watching the military deployments during the war. As a result he suffered nerve damage in later years from coming into contact with Agent Orange. This is his memoir looking back at the life that awaited him in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.By chance he fell into the role of tour guide for AARP, and jumped at the opportunity to be paid to travel. Who wouldn’t? Remember, these are the early days of group travel when perhaps there was a single Pan Am flight only once a month to Papeete in Tahiti! How things have changed. And this is what makes this memoir remarkable – Stephan writes like a modern blogger, in short chapters, with terrific enthusiasm and open-heartedness, but the style is very much of the 60s and 70s, which makes for a curious mix.As he travels the world, the theme running through the book is the developing romance between him and his new found love on Tahiti, Amy, and the innumerable hoops he has to go through in order to win her over. A rather large stumbling block emerges, in that she is married to an abusive husband. But the path of true love never did run smoothly. At one point, during a long break in his tour guiding schedule, he decides to join a boat, the Vaitere in hot pursuit of his new found love, only she doesn’t know he is coming. Awkward. But a horrendous bout of sea sickness literally takes the wind out of his sails and he struggles with survival as the ship continues its path through the atolls and choppy seas. Delirious at times he uses these periods to reminisce about other journeys he has taken, and this is perhaps the aspect that doesn’t work so well. There are brief ventures to Siberia, Russia, South America, and Timbuktu, and although of interest, they are digressions marring the flow of the story. In the end, does he win the girl or not…..?This is quite some story and I was pleased that this memoir came to my attention – the writing is good, the story is interesting, so much more because it is a true story and there are some wonderful insights into life in Polynesia: the migration patterns, flora and fauna, the French influence, and he discovers the pleasures of a pousse-café, an alcoholic cocktail that originated in France and came to New Orleans in the 1840s (different specific gravities are used to create a layered effect). A readable memoir.(Oh, and have you noticed the face in the clouds on the cover, top left hand corner above the word ‘love’?)

The first chapter I read in this book captivated me. I thought for sure the author was talking about some movie star or celebrity or drop-dead gorgeous political figure who had captured his fancy. Imagine my surprise when I discovered he was talking about... But, wait, you'll have to find that out for yourself. A rare find, this book is a must read for anyone who loves armchair travel, fantasizing, exotic places, life, love, and lore. Oh, yeah, and unbelievable endings! Trust me (what, you're still thinking about it?), you don't want to miss this one. It will be just as fun a read six months from now as you'll find it to be today! Five stars! Unfortunately, that's the most I can give it.

This book is very intriguing and a pleasure to read. The description of Tahiti in the late sixties and early seventies is captivating. As a retiree I was also fascinated by these insights on a “tour guide” career so different from my own. Nevertheless having traveled myself as a student to Russia in the late sixties, I can vouch for the accuracy of the funny observations made there. At its core the book is also an endearing love story.

What a wonderful autobiography from a Vietnam American soldier who fought as ordered and suffered eventually from Muscular ! as a result of Agent Orange. Most of the story is a beautiful travelogue--like you are there--of many destinations for tourists--even remote ones. These experiences also have true-to-life negative experiences. Delicately woven into those experiences is a lovely love story that is true! You must read to the end to get the most heartwarming experiences.
