This is a wonderful resource for the barbecue chef, whether you are just getting started, or looking to refine your skills. I had not read the original, and am so glad someone gifted me this one. It's a real gem!One disclaimer: I have not actually tried any of these recipes or barbecued according to the instructions given here. Not yet. I live in Seattle, and it is still monsoon season here. We often have a cold, rainy 4th of July. But soon it will be warm enough to dive in. In the meanwhile, though, I have been reading, checking the format, and eying his ideas.The most obviously appealing factor here is accessibility. The instructions, headings, chapters, and graphics all make it very easy to find exactly what you want to know...because although I am entirely capable of reading all 500+ pages of this tome, most of you will choose to flip through it for something in particular.One question I came away with regards the practice of soaking hardwood if it is being used to smoke the food. I have read elsewhere that this is not a good practice, but this writer advises it. I will probably try it both ways and see which works better for me.Back in the 1960s and 1970s, it was a common practice for mothers to rule the kitchen and fathers the barbecue; thus, at my mother's side, I learned everything from how to make flaky pie crust, to cooking main dishes and use leftovers wisely. (In those days, we had no microwaves, few palatable frozen foods, and so cooking was not a hobby or even an option; someone had to know how!)But the barbecue was this thing done by men, and so I wandered out to the barbecue when it was time to be served a burger or more often, the incredible salmon my folks and the neighbors caught on weekend fishing trips. Oysters shyly opened their shells when ready to be gulped down; everything on the grill appeared by magic, almost. I paid no attention whatsoever to how any of it was done. And during my first marriage, it was pretty much the same. There's the barbecue; here's some meat and buns; let me know if you need anything from the store. I turned back to the kitchen (where women go) to make a big fruit salad or boil corn.Reel forward another dozen years. I have married an immigrant who is not even slightly amused at the notion that he should barbecue anything, ever. I tried handing him the meat and buns and pointing at the barbecue, and he gave them right back to me. I explained that I actually did not know how to barbecue; neither did he, and furthermore, if I wanted to eat barbecue, I'd better learn. And so I began as most novices do, squirting hideous petrochemicals onto charcoal and newspaper, and producing indifferent (but barbecued!) burgers and dogs.Over the years our eating habits have evolved. I don't eat much meat anymore, and was interested to see the cedar plank salmon cooking method laid out here. I will try it. I have had moderate success in wrapping salmon in foil, but I am always interested in new things. I was delighted by the number of vegetable oriented dishes provided, if a bit frustrated by the vast amounts of olive oil recommended. Yes, I know, a barbecue will dry vegies out if they aren't lubricated, but all the work losing weight is undone if one has to drown the mushrooms, tomatoes, and eggplant in the very most artery clogging oil that exists. I may try substituting a little sesame oil or a dash of soy sauce; we'll see. But there are so many great looking recipes here that I can't wait to get started!One of the joys the barbecue provides is the capacity to eat well and save money. My family is not cheerful when they see the cheap cuts of meat I grew up on, and leftovers? Not even. Here are some great ideas for slow-cooking and smoking meats in ways that nobody could walk away from. Although one has to buy charcoal, more money is saved by not using the cooking unit in the house and the energy it requires not only to cook, but to rid the house of all that heat! City dwellers don't have summer kitchens as rural folk used to do, but the barbecue on the deck is a fine substitute.If you don't own a barbecue, read the author's suggestions before you make your purchase. He does not try to sell you on a particular make or type, but does offer salient considerations that should go into your decision if you aren't absolutely sure which type you want.Summer comes late here, but the sun peeks out here and there even in May, and I will be watching for my first wonderful opportunity to try indirect heat and smoking for the first time. Meanwhile, I can enjoy that barbecue experience vicariously by continuing to check out new recipes and put sticky notes on the most interesting pages.A great gift for Mother's Day or Father's Day, depending on who does the grilling at your house!

Very informative book. My husbands grilling skills increased 100% after reading through this book. He says it's top notch for teaching techniques and the only downfall is that some of the recipes have ingredients that are not readily available (though they sound delicious!). Of course it has a huge selection of meat recipes but it also has a decent vegetarian and vegetable side section, which I appreciate. The author also included a chapter dedicated to drinks (soft and hard) and suggested food parings.

If you are at all looking to get better at grilling or smoking, this book is a must read. Even if you are looking to buy a new grill, read this first. I though I knew a lot about grill. Then I read this. WOW! Was I ignorant. Not anymore.

This is a great book for anyone getting started with outdoor cooking. Easy to read, straightforward, and pretty much foolproof recipes and techniques. A great manual to hand to your kids when teaching them how to get started on the grill and backyard BBQ'ing. They'll learn the right way, and not develop a lot of bad habits (That's right, I'm looking at you, smash-the-burger-on-the-grill-to-make-the-flames-shoot-up guy!) As your skillset grows, you'll probably find yourself reaching for other books more frequently.

Now before I start...yes, some "purists" are going to chime in that its mostly grilling and not "barbeque." Don't care...most of us understand what most people mean when they say "barbeque" anyway. Moving on...This is a great book. I had a previous edition and gave it away. (I do stuff like that.) It's especially good if you're looking to broaden your horizons and move beyond an occasional burger, grilled steak or ubiquitous boneless skinless chicken breast. Not that those can't be great...but one can master those in a couple weekends.OTOH...if you're the type that wants to explore the culinary world: it's worth checking out. Want something from China? Or Southeast Asia? Or the Middle East? Or the Mediterranean? It's covered. Add in some Caribbean & South American flavours and there's a whole lot to explore. And he didn't skip the regional flavours of the U.S. either.I've given a few of these away (mostly the older addition) and they've all been well received. That said, if the culinary taste buds strictly stop at "meat & potatoes," this is not the book for that. This is for the person that wants a steak on one night, some jerk chicken another night, and something from Africa or Asia the next.

Great book for recipes for "barbeque" and grilling. Well written, easy to read and understand.Because I am new to using a smoker and true barbeque I was hoping for a little more "how to" instructions. With that said, I love the book and would recommend it to anyone for the recipes and tips.I used Steve Raichlen's simple recipe for barbequing short ribs (Memphis Style rub, pg. 194) and took a shot using my limited knowledge of how to smoke ribs. They came out fantastic! All the shows I have watched say you learn with experience, I believe it. I can't wait to try more of his recipes for pork, beef, chicken and some of the more exotic meats!

Steven Raichlen is the BBQ King, imho.....his vast knowledge of all things grillable and all grills is invaluable. Recipes are easy to follow and the addition of sauces, sides and desserts is wonderful! I'm not a very knowledgeable person as far as BBQ skills, but I have every confidence that this book is going to teach me and I'm gonna be great lol! P.S. his show is awesome, too! I learn something new every single time I watch it

First, full disclosure I bought this book on Kindle and regret not taking the time for the actual book. Personally, I like to write in the margins, high light and (gasp) make copies of graphs, diagrams etc. but I wanted it quickly and will also purchase the book.It is a very useful and practical book for an OD professional or a business leader that wants hands on control versus employing a consultant. While practical it is a break down of their methods and approach. It is also directed towards a "Matrix" management model, some discussion of other forms of design and their pro's and Con's would have been very useful. The authors are Jay Galbraith mentees so don't expect a critique of matrix management.If you buy into matrix management and the clear advantages in a collaborative environment that has broken down the silos, it is very useful and directive. They have addressed some of the early pit falls of matrix management's question of accountability but don't expect direction to design a "command and control" environment, which would not be an option for most situations but may be required in some.As my rating would indicate, it is an exceptionally useful and instructive book. The steps in their process are clearly articulated as are the underlying issues you are trying to get at. Most impressive, to me was, the way they lead you through the decision you have to make and the questions the various stakeholders have to answer. They walk you through those questions and discussion to arrive at a decision. The book does assume you have a working knowledge of Galbraith's STAR Model, I found that I had to review this model to fully utilize this book. The willingness to be this open and instructive was much appreciated and the advantages greatly outweigh these minor critiques.

I was working late one night preparing for a new client meeting regarding redesigning the corporate center, and I found Leading Organization Design by Gregory Kesler and Amy Kates immensely useful. They have captured ways to address some really tricky issues.This book is a great addition to the organization design literature. Full of a wide variety of case studies, it includes fresh concepts, frameworks and tools that are practical, intuitive and easy to apply for an organization design practitioner. Hats off to both of them for a book that could easily become a classic.

It's a practical guide to all the necessary steps one must take in order to ensure alignment of all the components that enhance or inhibit your organization's ability to work smoothly. Kates and Kesler provide a practical framework that is written for the line manager who needs to redesign and the HR practitioner who helps make it happen. Easy to follow, simple to use, and a must-have for anyone who has this challenge in front of them.

I have worked with Greg before, so I was really pleased to hear that he was capturing his wisdom about organization design into a book. His collaboration with Kates is an approachable and example-filled look at all the major themes that a leader should consider in organization design. Even if you are not in the midst of a major organizational change, you will find ideas in this book to help you take organization effectiveness to the next level.

This is great stuff. Straightforward and lucid, but far from simplistic - they capture the nuances and complexity you have to understand to succeed in designing an effective organization. Kesler and Kates obviously have a wealth of experience in OD with many big-time sophisticated organizations, and it's great that they're willing to share so much of what they've learned over the years.

This is a great mix of practical, how-to content, combined with a lot of research on what great companies are doing in the field of org design. There are some very new and big ideas in this book for how companies approach growth markets with organization. An easy read and you will mark up the pages and put stickies on the ones you want to come back to.

This book discusses both organizational design choices and how to execute on changing a company's reporting structure. A lot of attention is given to how important the right balance of power is in a matrix organization. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about organizational design in general and those embarking on as restructuring of reporting relationships in their organization.

Mark D. Marshall and Helen O. Leung are faculty members in the chemistry department at Amherst College with over 30 years of combined experience teaching physical chemistry to undergraduates. If you are taking physical/quantum chemistry and use Mcquarrie's book, this is a must-have. After buying so many solutions manuals, its nice when they come with ALL of the answers, and not just "selected" answers or odd/even answers.Additionally, this book tends to show ALL of the steps (at least assuming you have at least a minimal level of competence) required to solve the problems, and includes clearly worded explanations when required.Though a class in physical/quantum chemistry may only be a 1-star (if you're not planning on continuing into it for specialization), this solutions manual definitely deserves 5-stars.

This book is handy when you have tons of homework to finish in a small amount of time, and you just want to get the answers down and learn the material later. I know, not the best way to study, but everyone's different.I don't recommend this book for studying, only for getting the final answer. The explanation of the answers is hit or miss. Some will tell you most steps of the process, but the majority of them skip several steps and don't tell you how they arrived at their result. It's frustrating because McQuarrie's text is difficult to understand sometimes and I wish I'd had a second explanation of the material.

Detailed, answers every question in at the end of each chapter. Very helpful. I did not give it five starts because it there are some questions that leave unanswered questions. But for the most part this is a great study helper.

Rev. Dr. Clinton A. Chisholm has been researching the truth claims of the Ras Tafari movement since 1970 and in 1990 he published an audio book Rastafarianism Evaluated. He has been in live, televised and other recorded discussion sessions with noted Caribbean Rastafari brethren such as Mutabaruka, Bunny Wailer, Dr. Ikael Tafari, Dr. Leahcim Semaj and Miguel Lorne. He served as consulting editor far the 1998 book Chanting Down Babylon: The Rastafari Reader. The Rev. Mr. Chisholm studied at the Jamaica School of Music, the Jamaica Theological Seminary, the University of the West Indies, the University of Sheffield (England), the International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism & Human Rights (France) and Biola University (U.S.A), He holds two Masters Degrees, an honourary D.D and is a Fellow of the International Academy. In his revelations on Selassie's names and titles (pp.24-26), he shows how ignorance of Ethiopian history and customs leads to the crucial fallacy that Selassie was anything more than the 'king of the kings' of Ethiopia, only.The much revered Rastafari reference book, the Kebra Nagast, comes in for a diligently argued position contrary to popular Rastafari belief (pp.27-31). Chisholm meticulously argues to disprove any idea that Jesus was either Black or must have had dreadlocks.Philosophical (as well as historical) arguments see him through his Revelations regarding the claim that Rastafari is superior to Christianity. Here he educates as he repudiates fallacious claims regarding religions intrinsic to Africa.On the critical side, Chisholm, devotes about 20% of the material in this book to a collection of articles and reports on debates relevant to the book's thesis, in the appendices. These could have been better organized under chapter headings. It is intense and yet highly focused and so no attempt is made to assess the Rastafari Movement sociologically, as is customary in academia. Therefore, there is no attempt to praise the Movement for anything.A generous section of notes, index and a bibliography are provided, indicating its scholarly character. However, technical errors although few, would include the following: the failure to identify, on page 23, penultimate paragraph, Theodore as identical to the earlier mentioned Tewodros; a note on page 37, appendix 1, cites page 63 instead of page 64; and, on page 38, 4th paragraph, the 1st and last lines should spell 'complimentary' instead of 'complementary'. Nevertheless, despite those critical observations, Revelations on Ras Tafari is indispensable for every intellectual and serious student of Rastafari, Caribbean studies, Caribbean History, Sociology and Theology.

I realize it is intended for a young audience, but when you are giving such a little bit of information about each president, I would have highlighted the most important things. Take for example the entry on John Quincy Adam's which includes the fact that he didn't win the popular vote (important), with mostly other very trivial facts, like his swimming naked in the Potomac and the rather subjective statement that "like his father before him, John Quincy Adams got on many people's nerves." Nothing about what he accomplished for the good of the country is included. I prefer Ken Burns's book Grover Cleveland Again, which is more difficult, but contains more substantial information. Also, I don't like cartoon drawings only. A real picture of each president would help kids remember faces better.

I absolutely love this book about the presidents. It has the right information that keeps my childs interest and even has me learning new stuff. There is a fun fact (or two) about every president. And the illustrations make it fun for the kids too. My kids pick this book as a bedtime book.

This says *updated* but it stops at Obama. Just a heads up to anyone looking to purchase. Other than that it’s a very kid friendly way to learn about our nations leaders

My son loves it (4 year old). The only caveat, I added some real pictures of the presidents and glued them on top of the cartoons that are showed in the book. I also learned very interesting things about the presidents.

My son has been fascinated with history, especially Abraham Lincoln. He loves weird facts and learning new things others don't. This book has bypassed his plants vs zombies, his hilo books and other comic books he's been reading. He loves it!! He is in second grade.

My son enjoyed the book but I was annoyed to see it mentioned that bill Clinton lying a out his affair. I do not want my young child knowing this information.

At 8 years old he would not understand important facts like Watergate, Iraqi war, etc. He is however remembering the presidents by facts such as 'which president loved peanuts.'Good choice for elementary students, highly recommend the purchase.

We LOVE this book!!! My 6-year-old is a history buff, and this book (and the musical Hamilton) is part of the reason why! Fun, kid-friendly facts about each of the presidents and their time in office. Highly recommended!!!

I loved Legacy of Kings and so I was eagerly anticipating the sequel, Empire of Dust. I absolutely loved the sequel! There is magic, betrayal, murder, attempted murder, a little romance, and a lot of surprises. There were some plot twists that I didn't see coming and I love that! There were also some unanswered questions and I hate that! I need book three stat!One thing I love is how Eleanor Herman weaves a lot of factual history into the story. For example, one of the (minor) characters in this story was Artaxerxes, ruler of Persia, who in his youth, murdered eighty of his brothers to win the throne. Hephaestion and Alexander did actually have a close relationship with one another in real life. Just knowing these little facts makes me appreciate how hard it must have been to weave to together this epic fantasy with historical facts."This is the most enduring and most magnificent thread in literary weavings both old and new—the indestructible bond of our collective history." --Eleanor HermanThis book had me turning the pages to see what happened next. I had a hard time with Legacy of Kings the first in this series, but Empire of Dust was fantastic. I'm going back to reread Legacy of Kings as I think I missed out on what was going on. It's a bit like Game of Thrones - lots of characters in different areas - and I didn't appreciate what was going on in the first book. But now I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series. But I really need to reread that first one!

I loved this sequel to Legacy of Kings! There's so much double crossing and betrayal! The history has been expertly weaved with magical fantasy! I really loved reading from all the different point of views

This is the third and best book in the series IMO. Enjoy the magic, the mystery, and the adventure. Author knows how to weave a story.

Excellent follow up to the first book. Didn’t drag and I finished it really quickly. Can’t wait to read the third one
