Loved the series, easy reading

I loved every single one of these books. The characters were awesome and great for each other. Could not put these down at all. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Awesome series and an awesome writer.

I enjoyed it but felt like it was written by someone for whom English was not necessarily 1st language. No problems with that, I couldn't write anything in a 2nd language. My reference was just the use of certain words and phrasing. Also the constant use of smirking instead of smiling. Silly little irritants. Otherwise ok. I love Paris and was there recently so was fun to visualise certain places. I'd have loved to have found La Boheme and met Jeanne and enjoyed her coffee.

I can't say enough Good about this book and all of Alix's other books. I loved all of her books. She has a way of drawing the reader into the story and making you miss all of your appointments just so you can keep reading. It is a pleasure to read her books because her editor(s) know how to form a complete sentence without all of the mistakes I see in most of the other books (except Non-fiction). Reading a book by Alix means I won't have to re-read everything just to figure out what the author was trying to say.LaBoheme was a great collection of wonderful characters with fabulous stories to tell. Thank you Alix for bringing those characters to life. I enjoyed every minute and only wish you had another 1000 books for me to read. I did get the free book when I signed up for her website, but by then I had already read all of the books. So if you haven't read all of her books yet, go sign up and get the free one first. I know you'll like them as much as I did.

I bought this book mainly because I had an interest in developing a hard sci-fi story. I was looking for the type of practical advice that I wouldn't necessarily find in a generic craft book (for example: how can I design my own planet??). This book was exactly the type of resource I needed. I have about thirty pages dog-eared at the top and another twenty dog-eared at the bottom (my system: if there's something interesting near the top of the page, I dog-ear the top; if there's something interesting near the bottom of the page, I dog-ear the bottom). "The Creation of Imaginary Beings" and "The Creation of Imaginary Worlds" were especially helpful, not to mention the essay on building a future.For those of you who are more interested in some basics written THROUGH the sci-fi genre, there are a couple chapters worth your time (especially the ones written by Isaac Asimov). Though I consider most of those chapters a little below my skill-set, I was still humbled by Stanley Schmidt's "Seeing Your Way to Better Stories," which I dog-eared a couple times.All in all, I came in looking for specific, concrete advice on world-building in the sci-fi genre. I wasn't disappointed.

I just got this book and have only been through a few chapters, so far, but it has pointed out some important things for me. I suspect this would be a good read for anyone who writes or wants to write.

Here are the essays -- the old essays -- everyone in the science fiction field references. I decided it was time to stop letting everyone else tell me (for example) what Heinlein's Rules For Writing were, and read them myself, un-paraphrased, un-modified, and in their original context.

A different aproach to -How to write... - book, not by explaining how to actually write something but a series of essays where the authors explain how they write and what rules they follow and what's important for the story. I find it very interesting, specially because these are renowned authors, with decades of experience.

There is lots of good practical advice by the many authors inside this book.

Not quite as good as the book written by the editors of Asimov that gave examples, but I still found this useful and have carried it to my writer's meetups.

This is a book of essays. Some are much more interesting than others. Overall... a good book.

Bought this for my husband. He really finds it helpful!

One word.. Helpful.!! Even though you feel overwhelmed by having to read this book and then your textbook, it's worth it if you want to understand what you're reading. The material in the this book is broken down in a more simplistic, straight forward manner that it complements your textbook. I am not big on reading and was very skeptical and unmotivated to have to read an additional book to understand the material. But to be honest, it was worth the money and additional time spent reading it.

I bought this as a refresher on work I did before I retired. Good material and easy to comprehend.

Very helpful book. Much better job explaining fundamentals than textbook.

I really love to just teach myself things outside of class because some professors just cannot teach no matter how smart they are. By actually reading through the book, doing examples, and then doing the problems in my own book assigned by the professor, I was able to do extremely well on homeworks and tests. I also understand it all, which to me is much more important. Now I plan on getting a For Dummies book whenever I can just because it teaches so well at the basic and even deeper level.

Awesome for a deformables solids course. Really gets down to whats important and I think it complements lectures better than my textbook

Published by Bradt Travel Guide, this book on Mozambique (one of the world's most unknown travel destinations) is an excellent travel resource for all travellers. The attention to detail in describing all the places is guided by a genuine wish to reveal the beauties of this African destination. This book is literally the only travel guide book that is dedicated exclusively to Mozambique and it is describing these off-the-beaten-track countries that Bradt excels in.Mozambique is a wonderful travel destination for traditional tourists, luxury travellers, backpackers and Peace Corps volunteers alike. The nation is finally emerging from its trauma of civil war to be one of the finest democracies in Southern Africa. This Portuguese-speaking country has an extensive coastline of 2400km and is much bigger than Texas or South India or France for comparison. This country also comes with an bewildering array of tribes and languages in its different parts and the book goes a long way in helping you navigate it. The author has taken an lot of effort to structure his book in a way that travellers can clearly choose for themselves the chapters that they want to focus on. The ten provinces of Mozambique (plus the capital region of Maputo) are all covered through their separate chapters, focusing on their provincial capitals and secondary towns. In addition to extensive information on the main cities/towns, the book has separate chapters on the Quirimbas archipelago, Bazaruto archipelago and the Ilha de Moçambique island. This book structure is significantly different from the province-based chapter organization in the previous editions of this book. This is a welcome change because tourists are not civil administrators and the information that they seek is based on popular destination names within the country. The chapter on the Ilha de Moçambique island is covered in loving detail by the author and describes at length the Portuguese and Arab influence on this important piece of land.The author Phillip Briggs is a noted Africa safari specialist and thus the reader will find that this book contains a wealth of information on the wildlife of the country. Sadly Mozambique has suffered the most horrible poaching and wildlife massacres in Africa and hence most of the land-based mammals have been sorely depleted. The marine wildlife has also suffered similarly due to pollution and maladministration. Yet the author still goes out of his way to provide us all important information that makes Mozambique a wildlife travel destination. The chapter on Gorongosa is extremely well-written and useful. No less great are the two section on the Nyassa province (containing the beleaguered Niassa reserve) and the Limpopo nation park. The author provides important travel information on the roads and chapas available to travel this under-developed and under-built country. The lion-hearted updater Sandra Turay has done a marvelous job in traveling the country to visit all the major parks, restaurants, hotels and hospitals so that the guidebook contains the most up-to-date information for 2017.Mozambique is unique for various reasons, especially for its Portuguese speaking population and its extreme under-developed status. Any travel guide book purporting to cover it cannot do it by covering the region as a whole but must rather focus on the country separately so that travellers are aware of its peculiarities when compared to other Southern African countries. This book does an amazing job on that aspect and I count it as a great blessing for the people of Mozambique. That statement might sound like hyperbole but given the sparse information available on this country(even online) it would have been a daunting task for first-time tourists to traverse this country if this guidebook did not exist. The love of traveling Mozambique by the author and the other contributors is evident throughout the book and that is the most important ingredient in any guidebook. The only quibble that I have with this book is that the chapters on central provinces of Zambezia and Manica are quite dry and sound superficial as if they were written just to nominally cover all the provinces of Mozambique. This is entirely understandable because these places are still somewhat hard to access and don't have much to offer even for the most enterprising of tourists. All in all, this book is the jewel in the crown of all Bradt Travel guidebooks, though the book on Northern Tanzania Safari or Somaliland by the same author might give it a run for its money. Having this guidebook is an absolute must for all travellers to Mozambique, regardless of whether you are luxury tourist to one of its many beach paradise or a poor budget traveller like me. Please read it and even those who were not planning on there (also like me) will be enthused to visit this sun-blessed, forest-conserving nation of smiling people.

I 100% recommend this book. Although this book is for those who have already grasped the basic concepts of algebra/geometry, it is easy to understand. Mike does a wonderful job explaining each concept with just enough detail. The bits of humor in this book keep you going when you're bored. The practice questions at the end are really helpful because they are more challenging versions of the chapter content.After going through every chapter (be interactive! highlight important parts, takes notes, do the practice questions), I recommend writing down the general idea of each chapter on a flashcard; that way, you don't have to reread the chapters again. Through this painstaking 1 1/2 month process, I am happy to report that I got a 790!(Note: the most important part about improving your score (math or English) is to take actual full-length practice tests.Spending lots of time going over wrong answers, after correcting it, is the best way to improve. That being said, this book is most definitely needed to help achieve a near-perfect or perfect score. Use this book as a supplement to regular practice tests- be sure to finish it through at least once!)

I bought your PWN the SAT: Math guide for my daughter last summer and used it in conjunction with PrepScholar.com.My daughter improved her SAT 260 points to a 1580, and was almost perfect on her math (790) after scoring 620 just two months earlier.Your book was instrumental as she ran out of practice questions on PrepScholar well before she was ready. Both your readability as well as the quality of practice questions made all the difference. We purchased the other top 3 selling SAT math guides, and they weren’t close to as useful as yours.

I am a tutor in Central NJ and an adjunct math instructor at a local college. I have reviewed most of the study guides out there and this one wins -- although Philip Keller's The New Math SAT Game Plan is a close second. Both of these books really get into the mindset of what is required to do well on SAT math, but Mike's book is a little meatier. If I had a student who contacted me late for prep, I'd go with Keller's book since it is more streamlined, but otherwise for the student who is allowing adequate prep time I'd go with Mike's book.I was skeptical to purchase and inspect Mike's book with "Pwn" in the title, but with all of the glowing recommendations I decided to give it a try. I'm in my 50s and had to google the meaning of "pwn." Apparently, it means to own or dominate used predominantly in the vernacular of video gamers; it seems Mike is a gamer himself, but brings a lot more to the table. Notwithstanding the colloquialism used in the title, this is a serious book that is written to and for a teen looking to optimize his or her performance on SAT Math.Mike is an extremely intelligent individual whose book reflects his 2400 score. He knows his stuff inside and out and understands the roadblocks that prevent students from doing their best. Not everyone is a 700+ scorer, but everyone can and should get the score that accurately reflects his or her best test taking on the big day. More importantly, he writes in a casual,lively, entertaining tone. It is easy to see that he genuinely cares for his audience. It makes more sense to use an SAT book written by someone with the personal credentials to write it rather than the "written by committee" textbooks of the national prep companies. It really is a hidden gem. Amazon gets two thumbs up for selling these types of specialty books that most likely would not be given shelf space at Barnes and Noble to compete against McGraw Hill, Barron's, Kaplan, Princeton Review, and all of the other publishers that have the publishing clout to get shelf space. Sometimes the most popular isn't the best. McDonald's overall revenues exceeds that of Peter Luger steak house, the best steakhouse in NYC, but it doesn't mean you get a better meal there. Mike's book is the Peter Luger of SAT math texts.Great job Mike!

Best Math SAT book on the market, hands down. I am generally good at math, but my math PSAT scores were low and did not reflect that at all. However, I was able to get a 790/800 (only one question wrong!) the first time I took the real SAT, and this book helped immensely (and yes, so did diligence and hard work). Much thanks to Mr. Mike. This book teaches you strategies, gives shortcuts that are hard to find elsewhere, and actually drills you on the hard stuff. Also, this book is humorously written and not dry like pretty much every other SAT book. If you are looking to get top scores, this is the review book for you.

Math tends to be my lowest section, so when I saw the reviews on this book I figured why not give it a try? It was very easy to understand and simple. I loved the humorous, conversational tone of the book which made it a lot more student-friendly. I love how he has an index of techniques for each practice test. It really helped me when I reviewed my practice test; I got the questions right immediately! I really appreciate the author's effort toward putting out such a great book. If you actually follow the study plan/suggestions that he offers in the book I think it can really help you. You should also take advantage of the opportunities available to the Math Guide Owners (you'll know what I'm talking about if you buy the book). I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to raise their SAT scores and just understand math better in general. I look forward to pwning the SAT thanks to this book :)

This book is so good because of how entertaining it is. Most study books are dry, and as a result I had trouble convincing myself to read them, even to improve my sat score. This book, however, really is fun to read. It helped me review a lot of math concepts that I had forgotten, and it was great because I didn’t need to work on my English score, just the math section. It got me to a 790 on the math section which is pretty much as good as I could hope for

This was a pretty fun little book, telling a short, poignant story that (I imaging) at least someone out there can relate to. As the parenthetical statement indicates, I am not a girl nor am I a gamer (filthy casual, over here), but this story was still universal enough that I could grasp what was going on and find some enjoyment in it. Doctorow's script contains a likable protagonist who experiences online gaming for the first time, and gets drawn into what some may see as a seedier part of the MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) gaming culture. I won't go into too much more detail than that for the sake of sparring spoilers for those who haven't read this yet, but let me just add that this is a heartwarming tale that is a bit predictable at times, but is an ultimately enjoyable romp.The art was what drew me to this book in the first place, though, as it looks like a creative marriage of Bryan Lee O'Malley's (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Seconds) and Hayao Miyazaki's (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) distinct styles. Wang's style creates a very stylized world that I would very much like to see more of, but we sadly see more of the characters than the backgrounds. For instance, there are six unique races to choose from in the game world that takes up about half of the story (likely more), but we only focus on the protagonist and a few side characters, all of whom cover two of the six races depicted. I would very much like for this creative team to collaborate together again, if for no other reason than to see more of this digital world that was crafted for the book.In case that wasn't clear enough, I feel that this book was very short and sweet, but perhaps was too succinct. There are fantastic-looking elements of this book that I would have loved to see explored in more detail, but the brevity of the book doesn't allow for that. With all of that said, I did enjoy this book, but it is a very quick read (I finished in on my lunch hour) and I would have liked to have seen more of it.

In Real Life is a stunningly formatted graphic novel, by Cory Doctorow and cartoonist Jen Weng, that highlights the benefits and dangers of the online gaming world from the perspective of an impressionable youth named Anda. Anda is enticed into online gaming through an all girl group that initially serves as a source of inspiration and guidance for Anda, but as she participates and rises through the gaming world as KaliDestroyer, essentially her alter ego, she realizes that the virtual world like our own isn't always what it appears on the surface. The content of the novel covers self identity, autonomy, and their development alongside the technological world. The paneling and stylistic choices taken to portray the game by the creators allow the reader to relate to Anda’s experiences. The story itself seems cut short and brought to a quick end, but the overall journey is comprehensible and an important piece of work for adolescent or young adult readers coming up in the digital age.

I don't normally read graphic novels. Single issue comics yes, larger graphic novels...not normally. I grabbed Nimona up on a whim and absolutely fell in love so I told myself I was going to start trying to pick up more. I came across a review on Goodreads for IN REAL LIFE and thought..hmm that looks like it could be cute. I'm a girl gamer so maybe this will hit home and I'll find something else I truly love. Sadly that was not the case.I loved the art style and all of the colors in every panel were vibrant and beautiful. In addition the world building was done quite nicely as well. The characters I sort of have mixed feelings about however as I feel like while it took child labor (in foreign countries) which is a serious issue and didn't really do anything with it. Yes it was brought to the attention of the readers and yes the protagonist tried her best to help the player/person it was affecting but it felt forced. Most of the character interactions other than Anda and the Chinese boy felt forced and lacked much feeling or substance.It did make for a very quick read and I am still glad I picked this graphic novel up however I just wish it would have hit home like Nimona or I Hate Fairyland did.

I love me some great graphic novels and this has got to be one of the best that I’ve read in a long while! Pair an awesome storyline with a kick ass female character and video games, and voila! You get In Real Life! I’m not even kidding when I say I read this in about 45 minutes because it was just THAT good. It was so refreshing to read a story where a girl (emphasis on girl) gamer goes through a story making mistakes, but also inciting changes in the world around her.Anda was such a real character and I loved her perseverance to do what was right, not for herself, but for those of whom she didn’t even know. SO cool! I wish I could’ve had that sort of resolve at sixteen years old. I love how everything was wrapped up too, and the length of this graphic novel was just right. Everything was basically perfection.

Jen Wang has this amazing art style and way of telling stories that make you relate to the characters almost instantly. This is the first story I've ever read involving video games that didn't over exaggerate the fact that it was about video games, you know? Makes me think of the web series, "the guild," where yes, they played a video game together but they were real people with real issues behind the screen. Very nice to see.(P.S. I read the Prince and the dressmaker before this, which made this an instant buy for me. If you read this, give that book a shot too!)

I was disappointed by the length. It took me less than an hour to finish. There's barely any dialogue and the story just kinda... happens... without a lot of filler or character development beyond what's required by the story. Still, the drawings are great, and I suppose I could've guessed the length by the genre and the preview. I'd recommend it, but if you're one to read and then dismiss, maybe spending $14 for a book you'll finish in a day isn't wise. Give it as a gift when you're done reading it.

I've never read a voice like this--not because of the style, though. Yes, the writing is good and beautiful in parts, but if Hemingway really did say that Markham was a better writer than he, I disagree. For me, the complex long sentences tripped over their own feet at times, overextending metaphor where Hemingway's simplicity would have done better. No--it was the workings of Markham's mind, her philosophy and decision process, that I found truly incredible.Paula McClain's book Circling the Sun is a fictional memoir of Beryl Markham, and West with the Night is her actual memoir. I wondered at first why McClain would choose Markham of all people to fictionalize, when Markham had already spoken for herself in this memoir. I was almost irritated. After all, Markham is dead. She can't speak up and say, "that's not how it happened. Read the book I ALREADY WROTE if you want to know." Now that I've finished West with the Night, I understand why Mcclain wanted to write Circling the Sun.Markham writes about how she came to hunt with the Masai tribe as a child in Africa, and how she came to love and train horses (when there were no other women doing it), and how she came to fly planes (when hardly anyone, let alone women, was doing it), but she dwells not at all on her personal relationships or feelings, which for the curious reader should provide context and explanation of Markham's unusual talent and viewpoint.She writes more about the moody, wise, indifferent nature of Africa than she writes about her own feelings. We have no idea, for instance, what it felt like when her mother left Markham and her father to return to England when Markham was four years old. You don't even know from West with the Night that Markham's father practically forced her into marrying an older man at the age of 17 because her father was moving and didn't know what else to do with her. These events undoubtedly shaped Markham's courage and ambition, but West with the Night doesn't tell us how.West with the Night is the end result of some strange fomentation within the person of Markham. She writes without arrogance and with plenty of humor about all of her 'firsts.' To Markham, they were simply good ideas. She cared nothing for, or even seemed to think about at all, what other people thought of her. She moved in circles that other women never entered, and was treated as one of the boys. In making life decisions, like the decision to move to Britain, for instance, she was pointed solely by the needle of her own compass. She was happy flying and scouting game in Africa, but wondered what she might be missing. So she moved. Apparently, men followed her. I admit to my morbid curiosity on this point, and I may read Circling the Sun for McClain's take on the other parts of Markham's life.On the other hand, I may not read it. Markham's critics accuse her of not writing her own memoir (it's too good, they say, to be written by her), and of being a home-wrecker. Her critics look for opportunities to criticize her, for of course she is too unbelievable to escape jealousy. Our curiosity about Markham's personal life shares also this unbelieving desire to justify, to show how the rest of us may have gotten from Point A to Markham's Point Z if only we'd been born into similar circumstances. Really, all you need to know is that she did these things, in spite of fear, and did them well. She was luminous and rare. You can sit back and be inspired by her story without having to justify, explain, or otherwise take away from its magnificence by delving into a personal life she preferred to leave private.

West With the Night is a marvelous auto biography of Markham's time in Africa. She was raised on a farm by her father who bred race horses, and became quite an accomplished trainer and horsewoman herself. Since the road system was deplorable or non-existent in the 1930's, small planes delivered the mail and other essentials, and she trained to be a pilot. She conducted groups of hunters on safari, helping them to locate big game, especially elephants which were difficult to locate in the vast areas of Africa.Her crowning achievement was a solo flight from Europe to Newfoundland, 3600 miles, 2000 of it unbroken ocean, in a small plane with no radio and no electronic guidance systems. She had to let the engine die to ensure that she had completely consumed the fuel in a tank before switching to another tank and restarting the engine! It was an astonishing accomplishment for any pilot, and the first time for a woman to make such a solo flight. She writes with such intensity of the details of the 1936 flight that you feel like you're in the plane with her, gripped with the suspense and surrounded by the black night.Markham's writing is beautiful and at times poetic, especially when she describes the landscape and inhabitants of Africa. She lived in the wonderful era described so gorgeously in "Out of Africa", and even knew some of the people described in that book. She lived another 50 years after this magnificent feat, and I wish she had been convinced to continue writing.

To read this is similar to watching a time-lapse photographic record of an exotic flower bursting into bloom--all the more fascinating because the subject isn't a simple flower but a human being. By doing, one becomes!The story culminates in an epic, trans-Atlantic flight, but along the way it reads like a marvelous bed-time story--the kind that the Aesop's Fables author might have written if he had lived in Africa, observing human and animal nature in an era that feels farther removed from today than a mere century should seem.I enjoyed three things about this book: the beautiful language with which it is written, the observations of a world I will never see, and the affirmation that yes, it is possible to become all that one might be if only one takes that first step and then the next and the next.
