There is lots about Van Gogh in this well-illustrated book, but it is mostly about the place, the Asylum.Vincent's comings and goings to and from the Asylum; his fellow-patients, the landscapes and other subjects of his painting around the Asylum, his rooms in the Asylum, his views from the Asylum, the nature of his treatment and how he was treated at the Asylum. As such, it is a marvelous addition to the copious Van Gogh literature. I found it to be engagingly personal and entertaining, and I think other VanGoghphiles will too.

Although I’ve read MANY books on Van Gogh, I always learn something new in a Martin Bailey book.

It is great to know his environment while in health facility.

He wrote very little about this time in letters to his beloved brother Theo, so this book gives a helpful and sensitive impression of daily life behind the walls of the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and looks at Van Gogh through fresh eyes, with newly discovered material. I must be honest, I know nothing about Van Gogh except he cut off his ear. This is not to say that I don't appreciate a d enjoy his work, because I do. So this book was an eye opener in many ways. It is about his time in the assylum, and the time reading up to it. It does discuss the cutting off of the ear-which I found fascinating. Why would anyone do this and then send the ear to someone? We are extremely lucky that Van Gogh was allowed to wander the countryside and still paint! This book was almost overwhelming with the information provided. Still, I found it well done and thought provoking. I am no expert but enjoyed this a d would recommend. I rate it 4.5 stars.

This has been a truly wonderful reading and visual experience, seeing so many of Van Gogh’s most iconic paintings and learning how, and in what circumstances, they were created. The excitement is tempered by also learning more about Van Gogh’s emotional/psychological life, which certainly cost him peace of mind, freedom, health, and ultimately, life.This book primarily deals with that year at St Paul’s asylum separated into chapters by the type of paintings he created. Van Gogh’s inspirations came primarily from the natural world around him, the town of St Remy, and a few people he saw regularly during the year. His brother Theo sent supplies on request and paintings were sent to Paris for show or sale (though sales were rare).The discussion of Starry Night led me to enjoy the painting even more. That the Almond branch painting was done for his new godson adds a dimension to Vincent that I was happy to find. His multi-season paintings of the wheatfields are new to me, a wonderful surprise... I don’t believe I had seen them all before.I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in Van Gogh. It covers the penultimate year of his life and all of the art he created over that time. In addition, it provides some further information on what has happened to these pieces in the intervening years, including some “lost” pieces. There is also a history of St Paul’s hospital itself into the late 20th century. For potential art tourists, there is information on areas of interest around St Paul and St Remy and Arles. For information seekers, there are extensive footnotes and a lengthy bibliography.The reproductions of Van Gogh’s art work are beautiful. I read this on an iPad and the clarity and color are excellent.A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Starry Night: Van Gogh at the Asylum by Martin Bailey is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late August.Though the non-fiction narration itself is somewhat scattered, Bailey does very well to place you into a sensory headspace for Van Gogh's asylum visit for about one year and one week, learning the effect of his relationship with his brother, Theo, on his own sanity, the history of the asylum itself (before and after Van Gogh's death) alongside his day to day experiences and making art from the garden (like 'Irises,' which I had no idea of its origin), and Bailey's experiences while doing research.

Interesting read, well-researched and presented in a manner any art lover might enjoy. A bit slow at times with countless details as the focus generally remained on each piece van Gogh produced during his stay at the hospital. Some character development but none resulting in intimacy. Nice addition to the chronology in the life of one of our greatest artists of all-time.

Yoshifumi Miyazaki has written a nice and full overview of Japanese forest bathing. The book itself is beautiful from design to photography. The content is very good.

I have several books about forest bathing and while this is a good book, it's focus is on the Japanese customs and why it's significant to their culture. It's interesting, but I was hoping for a little more science - how Japan and other countries proved the positive aspects, what they're specific findings were and such. So, yes, it's a good read but more of a fluff book than research. It has beautiful photographs and is motivational to connect with nature, but if you're looking for research and science, look for a biphilia book. IMPORTANT TO KNOW: You'll find somewhat conflicting information in every book you read. It's a growing science, so lots of interpretation with the information. Regardless, it's a subject worth looking into.

I'm torn over how much I like this version of the Disney Character Encyclopedia. I bought my daughter the 2009 edition, but decided to get the updated one to use as an autograph book for our upcoming WDW trip.Pros:It includes a lot of the new characters, from Frozen, Planes, Up, and even The Pirate Fairy.I personally like the clean new style of the pages, particularly the solid band of color on the side with the character's names - it makes it very easy to flip through to the right page.They removed some of the more obscure characters that I just don't care about (does anyone even remember the names of the "Dinosaurs" characters?)The hardbound edition is nice, & the book jacket can help keep your book from getting dinged. The pages also seem a little thicker and nicer quality, but that may just be an age issue.Cons:My 12yo daughter much prefers the old style, with each character having a font that fits them or their movie style.The old edition had more fun facts about the characters, including things like their favorite colors, etc. The new version seems like a little bit drier read.I miss the 2-page spreads for main characters. Especially using this as an autograph book, that extra space was nice.Some people may be upset about the characters that were removed. There's no page for the Prince from Snow White or most of the Neverland Fairies, both of which are still available for autographs occasionally.I haven't actually weighed the books, but the new version seems a little heavier. This may not be a problem if you're just using it as a normal book at home, but lugging it around the parks may get cumbersome. (I plan to carry ours in a stroller.)Overall I like the book and if you don't have access to the older edition I'd definitely say it's worth getting. But honestly I wish they'd found a better compromise between the 2 editions. Ideally I'd combine them and make one that would work better for my purposes. Or better yet, if Disney had made this book with the intention of it being used for autographs and kept all of the older characters from the parks along with the new additions, I would love it.

This is one of our favorite books! Purchased for our daughter to use as an autograph book for our Disney trip. Each character has their own page which makes it easy for signatures, and the paper is quite thick. I would recommend however if you are using it as an autograph book to have characters sign with a Sharpie marker. Has most of the characters and all of the more popular ones, however we did meet some that did not have their own pages so we had to have them sign the inside covers. The characters are very familiar with these books and some will write on their "friends" pages or make funny comments/drawings on their own. For example, the wicked stepsisters drew mustaches and crazy hair on each other's pictures, Gaston crossed out portions that made him seem mean, etc. All in all a great book and super cute to have as a keepsake from our trip. Definitely recommend.

After seeing this recommended on Disney Tourist Blog, we used this as our autograph book for our recent Disney World trip and it was perfect. The characters are all familiar with it and most know right where their pages are. Anastasia even knew how to do a quick edit to her and Drizella's page to make it more flattering ;)It is bigger than a traditional autograph book, but not very thick or heavy. We just carried it in our backpack so it didn't bother us at all.There are no Disney Jr. characters, but I printed out pictures of Doc McStuffins, Sofia, Elena, etc and taped them in the back cover of the book so they each had their own spot.I know we will read and treasure this for years to come, versus a traditional autograph book that probably would have just ended up buried in a drawer somewhere.

I bought this to use as an autograph book in Disney World. It worked great for that purpose and was a nice size to fit in our backpack diaper bag. I noticed it was advertised to come with a poster and ours did not come with one. That wasn't a deal breaker or anything, just worth mentioning. The only complaint I had was that it did not have any Disney Jr characters at all. I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old, so Sophia, Jake, Doc Mcstuffins and Handy Manny are all favorites in our house. We just had those characters sign the inside cover of the book but it would have been nice for them to have pages as well. Our 4 year old was a bit disappointed that they didn't have their own pages. There's also no mention of The Country Bears in the book at all, so again those autographs just ended up on the inside cover. Overall, this was a fantastic autograph book, easy to carry around the parks and a favorite keepsake for my kids now that we're home.

Love this book! I took Undercover Tourist’s advice and bought this book for autographs to Disney. We wrapped it in a reusable shopping bag and left it under the stroller until needed. It was easy for the characters to sign and my daughter would get excited looking for them as they approached our table. I dated and wrote where (Tuskers, Crystal Palace, etc) the autograph came from so when we read it we reminisce on where we were when it got signed. Have read through several times since and it is a great memory keeper in that aspect. Love this purchase! So much better than a traditional autograph book!

After reading the reviews, we decided to get this book and use it as my daughter's autograph book at Disney. We went several years ago with our older children and used the standard book you can buy at the park, but it doesn't compare to this one. The Junior Encyclopedia entertains and educates. Add that character's autograph-the character and their story are now even more magical. The only downside to this book was the size and weight. We also needed an extra large ziploc bag to make sure it didn't get wet in the rain and/or water rides. Overall, this is a great value and will be used more than the standard autograph book.
