I teach classical singing, but I like to give my students Broadway songs to sweeten the mix with all that Italian music. The songs date from the middle of the 20th century when Broadway was more like Viennese operetta. It is useful for keeping students singing well and not belting. I have all of my students buy this book along with the 24 Italian songs and arias (the standard singing text book). They are happy and Iâ€™m happy.

First to knew is that this is Vol 1 of The Singers Musical Theatre Anothology. It is difficult to tell that by the picture. This one does include both the CD and the book accompaniment. I play piano but some of these would take me years to practice to be able to play so unless you are an excellent piano player I suggest you get the ones including the CD's as well. My only complaint is that some of the songs are in different orders from the book vs. the CD's but it is clearly listed in the book. I so enjoyed the show tunes in this book. I also purchased the accompaniment CD's and have had great fun pretending that I can really sing!

This book was recommenced by my daughter's voice teacher. It has been something she uses daily and will continue to use for a very long time. My daughter loves this book and it has given her many wonderful songs at her fingertips.

I've always wanted this book for the reason that it has "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" in it from Sweeney Todd (the play as well as the Tim Burton movie). But its a MUST HAVE for a sheet music junky like myself :)It's always great to have anthologies of sheet music at hand. I believe this comes in all voice parts :)

Martin Mitchinson's "The Darien Gap" is a wonderful book, a great collection of histories, mythologies, and personal adventures and reflections. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in traveling in Central America, as well as for anyone who loves good, and thoughtful travel writing.In a place that is infamous for kidnappings, Colombian Guerrillas, and thick jungles, Mitchinson performs the unthinkable act of remaining in the region for a year and a half to gather together Darien's many stories into a book that is a pleasure to read. In a series of wonderfully-crafted vignettes, Mitchinson writes with a very personal voice to bring Darien's jungle to the reader - from the 65 million years of ancient geological formation, to native histories, pirates, eccentrics, and ridiculous canal schemes that are part of Darien's past and present.

This is a marvellous read and a marvellous exploration. Author Martin Mitchinson takes us through a remote corner of the Panamanian rainforest on a journey that is paradoxically both leisurely and exhausting. At his side we undergo a full range of jungle miseries, both grim and entertaining, dipping pleasantly all the while into byways of history, geography and legend. Whether he was enduring perilous hours in a dugout canoe or trekking painfully across the continental divide, Mitchinson held me captivated. By turns I laughed out loud at encounters with endearing characters or was moved by rippling passages of poetry and philosophy. At its best, and in common with the best of books and journeys, The Darien Gap transforms one's vision of life and of the world. Highly recommended.

The Darien Gap beautifully weaves together the local politics, geological and colonial history with native folklore in a personal voice. Finally, a travel book not focused on some hero conquering a new land. Mitchinson brings honesty and humor at his own discomfort. He offers a well researched story of a patch of jungle that "is the only missing link in what would otherwise be 16000 miles of uninterupted highway from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego". The book is brilliant!

I really enjoyed this book. It is obvious that tim Mackintosh has a love for Yemen. Many of us will never have the pleasure of visiting this exotic country of old history and ruins.I took one point away because the print is so small I could hardly read.I do wish publishers would think of us over 40 crowd who have plenty of time to read, but our close up vision has started downhill. I'm not read for the heavy large print copies but I really appreciate the books with larger print than this one.

This is a book of poetry. MacKintosh has immersed himself so much in the culture that he has produced poetry as prose, in the highest genre of the Arab.I try to write critical reviews. To weigh the good and the bad. I can't think of anything bad to say about this book. Whether or not I get to see the place, Mackintosh makes it come alive with his vivid writing and incredible sense of Arabic history. He writes mythically, so that his stories- his or retold by others- remain with you for years. I wish I had the time to get to all the places he describes!But it's not just history that Mackintosh brings in. He has a wealth of understanding of linguistics, especially of the Arabic world. Throughout the text he indicates the historical links with his experiences, through the languages of the people. He even brings in literature and history from other lands in a smooth manner that fits completely with the narrative.I'm sitting here in a netcafe in Ta'izz, Yemen, having just reread the book in my travels this past week in the country. It's great to read a book about the country you're traveling in- to simultaneously see the places you want to visit, and read about the places you've just finished. After reading his account of the Rock Palace outside Sana'a, I realized I had to go visit it. I talked with an expat who gave me a lift, who said he met Tim once- a guy who truly became Yemeni. I think about him as I try out qat. I'm constantly looking at where he writes about and looking on the map to see where I am.There are four kinds of people who should read this book. Those planning a trip to Yemen. Those traveling or living in Yemen. Those who have been to Yemen. And those who never plan to do any of the three, but like good literature. It's a pleasure to read in itself.

Bought this as a gift for my husband. We are relatively new to Florida and aren't familiar with most of the species of fish here. This has helped him identify a lot of the things he catches off our dock and the illustrations and "similar to" references also help out quite a bit. This was a great find!

The Freshwater Fish of Florida Field Guide provides an easy format to find and identify fish in a waterproof format. It also contains a fine listing of invasive exotic fish species found in Florida waters. Knowing these invasive species is valuble due to the fact that they are sometimes the only fish you see in the Florida's fresh water streams, lakes, rivers, ponds and in the waters of the Everglades. Easier to use than Peterson's Guide for Florida, it has excellent drawings of the various fish species. Very good beginners book which grows with you as you learn more about the topic as you use it to identify the many fish you see in Florida. Easy to use in the field.

This is by far the easiest and most enjoyable field guide to use. The illustrations are wonderful and the layout is extremely well thought out - you can flip the pages and see the large illustrations go by until you find what you are looking for. I like that the range is limited to the relatively small area of Florida. Very, very nicely done.

I'm trying to alternate between fun audiobooks and ones that I feel I should read rather than having any desire to do so. Plato's Republic was in that second group. I honestly expected to hate it. But it's one of the fundamental classics. So on the list it goes to listen to while I commute. And I loved it. It may have been that it was a full cast audio but it honestly did feel like being with a group. Maybe a quarter of the way in I realized what it reminded me of: when you are at a very mellow party in college and people start discussing things that are really "deep, man." And there's that one person who is way too into it and dominates the conversation. So that tickled me most of the book. The other thing that was really engaging was how much of the ideas in this book can be seen in the modern world. In that way it made it feel like an anthropological study and it kept making me say, "neat," even when I disagreed with whatever point was being made. Overall I would recommend this audiobook version because it made it come alive.

Whew, that was an intense read! I gave five stars because after careful consideration I realized that Alan Blooms interpretive essay really helped me to understand the The Republic to a different degree. The first ten books are the shoes, the interpretive essay is the shoe lace and it ties all of it up very neatly. To read something over 2,000 years old thatâ€™s been translated from Ancient Greek is a task in itself, I commend this translations interpreter he did a stellar job. This book is Heavy and not a book you can just pick up and expect to read in a weekend, its not littered with images that create a perfect picture for you to burn thru, itâ€™s page after page after page of thought, so it slows you down, a lot. Each page forces you to think about what youâ€™re reading, sometimes you have ZERO Idea and thatâ€™s ok, thatâ€™s where Bloomâ€™s Interpretive Essay comes in. To pick up this book and commit to finishing it is a Challenge I highly recommend, youâ€™ll walk away a better person with a sense of accomplishment and more thoughtful mind. Iâ€™ve read over 200 books and I think itâ€™s safe to say that this was the most challenging book Iâ€™ve ever put my mind too, if your looking for a challenge then youâ€™ve found it. While the book was written in 380 BCE it is, perhaps, more relevant today than at any time in its history. You would almost think that Plato had pulled a Dr. Who and transported himself to 2018 before sitting down to write. It couldnâ€™t be more tailored to the political, social, and economic environment in which we currently find ourselves.Plato/Socrates use elenctic (i.e. Socratic) questioning to explore human happiness and the specific virtue of justice. Socrates believed: â€œby curing people of the hubris of thinking they know when they do notâ€¦makes them happier and more virtuous than anything else.â€Socrates and his friends pursue this journey by defining the ideal city â€“ Kallipolisâ€”and its rulers and constitution, the idea being that truth is often easier to discern on a large scale (i.e. a city) that can then be applied on a smaller scale (i.e. the individual).The debate focuses on the four virtues of an ideal cityâ€”wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. And results in the conclusion that the human soul is made up of three partsâ€”the appetitive, spirited, and rationalâ€”and that virtue, ultimately proven to be the source of happiness exists when the three are in balance and harmony.Socrates ultimately defines five political/economic modelsâ€”philosopher/king, timocracy, oligopoly, democracy, and tyranny. And he ranks them, from good to bad, in the order listed, essentially arguing that they form an inverse ladder in which one inevitably deteriorates into the latter.That means, in essence, that oligopoly inevitably deteriorates into democracy, which he clearly doesnâ€™t not hold in very high esteem. Freedom, by his logic, is unsustainable. In the simplest terms, the unfettered pursuit of freedom by everyone ultimately leads to conflict and that, in turn, inevitably leads to a race for power defined by manipulation, deception, and injustice.As a result, democracy inevitably leads to tyranny as the ruling class preysâ€”quite deceitfullyâ€”on the fears of the masses that they, the masses, are being sidelined and their interests ignored. Sound familiar?The elenctic, commonly known as the Socratic method, has been largely stripped from our political and academic discourse. People are sure of what they know and donâ€™t want to know anything else. The thirst for victory has, as a result, crushed the thirst for knowledge.There are many reasons for this. Technology, which gave rise to the echo chamber, has certainly contributed. Impatience has also played a big role. Elenctic takes time and our collective attention spans have dwindled to near nothing. Education, I believe Plato would say, however, is probably the real culprit. Oppression, sheltering, and victimization have replaced Platoâ€™s definition of the ideal education: physical training, musical training (including prose and speech), mathematics, and dialectic.On the surface, critics will find no shortage of targets in the logic. More than anything else, however, both the argument and any criticism that might be drawn, reflect the imprecision of language itself and the difficultly this presents for philosophers willing to tackle the biggest and most relevant issues of life.That, however, simply reinforces Platoâ€™s encouragement to ask more questions, listen more attentively with an open mind, and never assume you know the real answer. Which is why his ultimate encouragement it seems to me is not to admire things that are beautiful or just, but to truly understand what beauty and justice are. Sadly, I can think of no leader today who is doing anything even remotely close to that.Read it. It will make you a better leader, citizen, parent, friend, and person.

Platoâ€™s Republic (Greek: Î Î¿Î»Î¹Ï„ÎµÎ¯Î±, Politeia; Latin: Res Publica) was written in 380 BC and this version was translated by Benjamin Jowett in 1871. It is a fiction book in the format of a discussion between Socrates and others. It aims to debate and conclusively determine the meaning of Justice. Socrates, the main character, was a Greek philosopher and the mentor of Plato. His philosophy is the basis and origin of the western philosophy. As a high schooler who often debates similar ideals and questions, I found this book to be very eye-opening and fascinating. Socrates doctrine proves itself true even in this day in age. That just goes to show, when it comes to ideals and behavior, humans havenâ€™t changed very much. Republic is very well written and even after thousands of years it still captures its audience with its provoking revelations and relatable content. If you often find yourself debating similar questions then you might just find your answers here, but if you dislike philosophy or are set in your ways you probably will not find this book to be interesting. For me, this book was an enjoyable challenge and I definitely would read it again.

This Kindle edition is not as advertised and entirely useless. First and foremost, it is absolutely not an annotated edition; there is not a single note anywhere in the text. For that matter, there are no Stephanus numbersâ€”the universal page numbers for all editions of Platoâ€”so you will never be able to either cite this edition or find anything referred to by other writers. I'm not even sure that this is the Reeves/Grube translation, as there is no publication information whatsoever. Avoid this like the Athenian plague.

Even though many, but not all, of these trick may be online, who wants to search all over for them? The book is an easy, fun read. And it cost less than my morning coffee and bagel!Cons: Not all the tricks are â€œwinnersâ€. I already knew some of the computer tricks and to spoof my phone number. Some of these you could probably figure out on your own eventually, but for the price I would rather just learn them here.Overall, totally worth the read!

only OK, this is a nice collection of yarns, but nothing to blow me away. Plenty of typos though. Hey I'm not the greatest at catching my spelling mistakes either, but when you pay for a book you are hoping for some editting.

Some not-so-called known tricks, mostly explained in a petty readable form. However, there were some sixty errors of grammar, usage, spelling - which began in almost the very first line of the book which got me to start counting in the first place - which is really quite inexcusable in such a small volume. Not the best book of this type out there but not the worst. I work in criminal investigations so most of this I was familiar with but there was a few new ones.

I found the book to contain useful information, but it had many typographical errors. That's why I gave it 3 stars.

Not much information here and what there is readily available from a variety of free sources. This "book" is really much more an advertisement for other products from the author.

This one had a neat page by page. I got what the author was talking about all the time. I've seen other crime techniques but this one did numbers on me. I really enjoyed understanding how private investigating works.

With the reviews here and at this price point I had low expectations... It easily surpassed them. A fun lazy afternoon read.

Before I read this book I felt a bit lost in all the diverse and sometimes conflicting information available on this topic. While I'm more than willing to draw on conventional medical approaches if that's what it takes eventually to conceive, I want to go in knowing that I have already tried everything possible through diet, supplements, stress management, and elimination of toxins to maximize fertility, to maximize the effectiveness of conventional medical treatments, and to ensure a heathy pregnancy and baby. Dr. Maizes puts all this information in one place, providing clear explanations, tons of practical advice, and many links to other helpful resources along the way. She writes with compassion, enthusiasm, and, most importantly, expert authority. She analyzes the available scientific research critically and draws on vast clinical experience, both her own and that of her community of practitioners. While the focus is very much on approaches to health that are usually ignored in conventional medicine, she also does a great job of explaining what the conventional approaches to infertility are and how to go about deciding when and how to use them. I really enjoyed the chapter on Traditional Chinese Medicine; it's a topic I knew little about and had kind of dismissed until now. The ones on Ayurveda and spirituality were a bit beyond my personal comfort zone, but I think it was good for me to be challenged in this respect.I think every woman (and man -- yes, there's a lot of stuff in here for the gentlemen as well) should buy this book if you're planning a pregnancy, whether or not you've experienced difficulty conceiving. This is an incredible and comprehensive book which is written with both expertise and compassion. I highly suggest that every woman who is preparing to conceive a child and/or who struggles with infertility purchase this book. Comprehensive guide for those planning a pregnancy. Good for those already pregnant as well. Lots of things to think about and Dr. Maizes covers them all. Highly recommend.

Planning for pregnancy was never something i had thought about. However I am very glad my wife bought us this book. Many parts were helpful to me to prepare for the pregnancy.
