Megan Bannen knocks it out of the park with her first novel, The Bird and the Blade. I read a LOT of fantasy and historical fiction - both for adults and YA - and absolutely LOVED this book. Bannen's writing reminds me of Brandon Sanderson's in its richness, well-developed characters, beautiful world, and sheer intelligence. I get so tired of trite writing with shallow characters (Chris Colfer's Land of Stories series drove me nuts - good bones, horrible flesh), and her writing is anything but trite. Her characters are perfectly imperfect, and I love them. (Except for Zhang, whom I love to hate. What a slime.) I root for Jinghua. I love Kahlaf the way she does. I want to shake them both at times. I cry with and for them. Most of all, I want MORE and can't wait for Bannen's next book!

4.5*I read this book from front to back in a day. The characters had me going because I felt so closely connected to them, and it's not every day I read a historical book set in the Mongolian Empire. The story felt fresh and the romance was just as compelling. Even the true nature of our main character was almost completely unknown to the reader until the last 100 pages. The story arcs of the characters left a lot of room for noticeable growth that the author took advantage of. The story was well paced and it never felt stagnate or boresom in any part of this book. I was very much enchanted and involved in this story. My only complaint is that is book ripped my heart out. I kind of saw it coming but I didn't want to believe it.

I cannot deny I have grown intolerant with the "latest " books to read these days. All of them seem to have the same female role plots who have to somehow outshine all of their male counterparts. I get it, girls are tough but can we please have a different, unpredictable way to tell a story with a leading female character? So, here I say, thank you to Megan Bannen for not only being unpredictable about the leading female character in the story The Bird and the Blade, but also in the way a story should be told. Trust me when I tell you this book is interesting and different from most YA published books. The only reason I gave it four stars in the end was because as a Christian, I could not even for a little like the religion involved, even if it is part of the history of the story it still bothers me. However, four stars are better than three and I will give an applause to the history, action, unpredictability, romance, and strong character roles in this amazing book The Bird and the Blade.

Would give 4 1/2 stars, if I could. Local KC girl writes a smashingly good epic YA novel! Megan Bannen has combined the history of the heirs of Genghis Khan with the opera Turandot and given it a modern spin with verve; much, much verve. No worries, I am quite the nodcock when it comes to opera besides the fact that I could not tell you anything about the Khan dynasty but I didn’t have to know the history to enjoy this book. I must admit, the modern text threw me at times but the story is a hypnotic one, structured in such a way that you must keep reading, you MUST know if Khalaf answers the three riddles, you just cannot help yourself. AND, I must tell you, you will need a tissue. This does not end with butterflies, rainbows and unicorns dancing in a field of daisies. It is well worth reading and ranks way above the run-of-the-mill, teenage angst-filled YA fiction that is out there. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a book with romance, adventure, humor and the added benefit of some history to tie it all together.

This book is really quite good. I was a bit confused at first because it used a few words I wasn't very familiar with (like Khan and khanate for instance, I can't think of the others off the top of my head) but it was intriguing enough right away for me to want to keep going. I caught on fast to the vocabulary (and it makes sense without the author dumbing it down for the reader.) And you immediately like the characters so you want to know more and to keep reading. It was a really good read and I will be recommending it to my friends and family.I don't give books 4 or 5 stars very often but I think this book deserves it. I would actually like to give it 4.5.

An alluring retelling of an ancient tale that unfolds gracefully like the blooming of a lotus flower. A Bird and the Blade is a refreshing escape from typical YA scenarios as the author takes you on a quest through historic Asia. The complexity of each character is expertly portrayed to give readers the weight and feel of what each has endured and the changes those hardships have wrought. Written in a series of masterful reveals, this book was difficult to put down. I especially enjoyed the present day feel of the writing and the interjection of humor that made the book very relatable. I cannot wait for Megan Bannen’s next book!!

The story takes place in Asia, loosely based on history after Genghis Khan's rule. the author weaves the current events with the backstory and weaves an interesting tale. the Story is told from the first person. there is suspense, a mystery and riddles to be solved. I highly recommend this book.

This book is well written and a great example of an old tale told from a different and detailed angle. Absolutely superior! Even includes research info at the end. I instantly was on the hunt for the author's other books. Apparently this is her first...sad for me that I'll have to wait. Kudos to the author on a great first book.
