About the Author

My name is Eric Kaufman. I hold a 50 ton master's license with the United States Coast Guard, served in the US Navy on a submarine, and am a PADI Divemaster. As a family we left San Diego in the fall of 2012 to start our adventure. As a father of two little girls I don't find the time to go surfing as much as I'd like to, but in general I like to do most anything on, in, or below the water. I'm big into fitness and nutrition which helps counteract my love of beer and food. After Mexico we're planning on heading into the South Pacific where if I learn enough and haven't gotten booed by too many sailors from making this book, I might just try to make another. My wife Charlotte and our two daughters Cora and Lyra put up with all my nonsense onboard our Hans Christian 36', Rebel Heart. Our youngest daughter Lyra was in fact born in Mexico. First off--I wanted to like this book. I follow the couple on their blog and they seem lovely. That said we sail down to Mexico every year and reading this book set my teeth on edge. Some of the advice is lovely: make and effort to meet the locals, use the language etc. But honestly, they just don't have enough experience to write this. Right from the outset there are errors: the advice to shop in Turtle Bay because there is nothing else on the Baja for example. The author must have missed the lively town of San Carlos in Bahia Magdalena. Even if he didn't stop there a bit of research might have kept that bad advice out of the book. I don't want to pick apart the book--but it is a fount of half-information and assumptions about a country the author clearly enjoys, and wants other people to enjoy, but is extremely presumptuous in writing about with such limited research and experience.

Purchasing and reading this book was a HUGE waste of my money and my time! I don't recommend it!

edit: this review was originally written last yearI'm attempting to be kind with this review.Ummmm.. "Lightweight" is the nicest word I can think of when describing this "guide to sailing".Is this a cruising guide? Is the a guide to newbie sailors? Is this a guide to traveling in Mexico? Is it just an essay by a relatively green sailor?Content is severely lacking. Imo, this would have been better condensed into an article or three in some random vendor giveaway.(Why does a novice sailing less than a year in an area of Mexico where gringos seem to outnumber the locals want/need to write such garbage..err, I mean "lightweight" reading material? Was this strictly a vanity project?)bottom line: If you are searching for an updated cruising guide to mexico, keep looking. This isn't it.

Was this guy ever in Mexico? I can't tell from reading this tripe.

I rarely take time to write a bad review but felt the need to warns others against the purchase of this complete waste of time. The author claims to be a cruising sailor. Not! His accomplishment thus far is sailing to the Sea of Cotez, Mexico form Southern California. He has little experiences to share and the writing is at a 3rd grade level. In the detailed description, "The Unauthorized Guide to Sailing in Mexico will give you valuable information and ideas on how to make the most out of your time." There is no information of any value and the author made the most of his time by baking in the hot sun subjecting he wife and two small children to extreme dessert temperatures with no air conditioning. This book is nothing more than a pathetic attempt by a wanabe cruiser to put a few dollars in the sailing kitty. Spend you money elsewhere.UPDATE: Since this review the writer was rescued and the boat scuttled. There are many "hater" reviews. Please note this was written prior to that event. The review stands. It is a badly written article.

I have had an opportunity to read the book and found it to be more of an opinion than factual from the author. There is nothing in this book that would be helpful as a guide to anyone, especially people that were heading out to cruise in Mexico. Possibly if the title were changed to "My Experiences in Mexico" it would be more appropriate.

The authors took their one year old and three year old on a planned 3000 miles trans-Pacific trip that failed and they risked the loves of their children.

Great little book that contains tidbits of information that one might only gain after having lived in Mexico and its various ports OR making the types of mistakes that this book could actually help you avoid. Having lived in Mexico myself and possessing a fairly good handle on the Mexican culture and language, I still felt this book offered good perspective and insight. It will be a great addition to my sailboat's library...ONCE I find the sailboat!
