Most of the wrecks were left untouched for nearly 25 years since people feared setting off the thousands of sunken bombs. Many of the shipwrecks in the scuba diving paradise have full cargo holds full of fighter aircraft, tanks, bulldozers, railroad cars, motorcycles, torpedoes, mines, bombs, boxes of munitions, radios, thousands of various weapons, human remains, and other artifacts. More than 3,000 people were thought to have been killed and some divers swear that the wrecks in Truk Lagoon are haunted.

Nice general guide to the lagoon. There is so much detail to be covered that a book this size can't cover it all but this book does a nice job of covering the dives in broad strokes

It gives good general descriptions of dive sites on Truk and has been informative on diving and other subjects

For anyone truly interested in Lincoln and the times he lived in, this is invaluable. I am thoroughly enjoying reading his correspondence, some of which is funny, clever and always very much too the point.It is wonderful portrait of our 16th president and it is in his own words. Interesting to note that poliically speaking there is nothing really new under the sun. Same politics -similar accusations - different time - some new and different problems, BUT, it is still all politics. Abraham Lincoln was an intelligent gifted man and was meant for the Presidency at that time in our history. Best 99 cents I have ever spent.

If you like reading about Lincoln this may be your read. Be warned, much of what is here is political dissertation of the time and as such is very dry. On the other hand his wartime telegrams give insight into a man who wanted to be very much involved in the actions of his troops. I espeically enjoyed his dispatchs to General McClellan. His letters and speechs make clear his real feeling on blacks, slavery and the Emancipation Proclamation. All evidence of the real Lincoln.

Being from the great state of Illinois I've always admired and read with delight anything on "Abe." While we don't normally think micro managing is the best leadership style, I believe that this time in our history a micromanager was required and he was an expert at it! He understood the importance of communication and used the telegraph to pull it off.

I had posted an earlier review, commenting on the lack of a Table of Contents making this book hard to navigate and, lo and behold, the publisher went and added a Table of Contents.Imagine having all of the writings of this incredible statesman in one place--and for ninety-nine cents! It's amazing. The availability of this kind of content is one of the things that makes the Kindle worth having.Many, many thanks to the publisher for putting these writings together!

Many of the examples are nice, text placement, text size, fonts, colors, etc. Overall, it's a nice addition to my library and I consult it on occasion when I need to.

I love this book. I have been a GIS user for 10 years and really only came upon this book last year. It really helped me to improve my maps through thorough explanation of methods of map development and great examples. It didn't take me long to get through the book, but the information was valuable: clear and concise. It gave me changes I could implement the very next day at work- and I did. I wish I had found this book 10 years ago.

Got a nice new version and am really enjoying it. Got it for class, but it is a book I might use in my career as well.

This GIS cartography book comes with lots of pictures and the font is easy to read. No issues regarding shipping from the seller.

This book will be mostly pretty basic for anyone who is trained as a designer since it relies on standard design methodologies to display map information (as it should!). I thought that this book was very well illustrated and well written and I enjoyed having it on-hand for a work project.

Colin Fletcher is a self-described "compulsive walker." It is not unusual for him to pick up a map, drive to an area that intrigues him, and then start walking. It should come as no surprise then that a detour from U.S. 66 to visit the Grand Canyon on a June morning in 1963 inspired Fletcher to walk the length of the Canyon below the rim. In The Man Who Walked Through Time Fletcher recounts his amazing journey. For two months Fletcher struggled against heat and cold, lack of water and dwindling supplies. The terrain was, at times, nearly impassible, yet despite the physical hardships, Fletcher came away from his experience with a new awareness of how humans fit into the vast scheme of things. He writes, for example, of meeting a rattlesnake on Beaver Sand Bar: "Now I am no rattlesnake aficionado. The first rattler I met scared me purple, and killing it seemed a human duty.... Yet by the end of that California summer I no longer felt an unreasoning fear of rattlers.... Instead, I accepted them as organisms with a niche in the web of life. Accepted them, that is, as fellow creatures." The Man Who Walked Through Time is a remarkable account of a journey both physical and spiritual. I am generally bored with nature writing and travel accounts, but in this case when the nature writing is wrapped with the story of the incredible adventure of hiking the Grand Canyon, it comes alive and draws me in. The book is structured as a detailed narrative of the trip with a lot of introspection about his reactions along the way. As he settles into the rhythms of backpacking and the Canyon, his musings get more profound but never overwhelming and always nicely grounded in the gritty details of the journey and the surroundings. There are similarities with "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," but this book doesn't jump around in time and it never turns into a philosophy lecture, which is my biggest complaint about "Zen."I also admire the writing. The author is not at the Annie Dillard level of wordsmithing, but I think his writing is much better than the average travel adventure writer can manage and the author is equally comfortable with mundane physical details and grand abstractions.I rarely read books more than once, but I've read this through closely twice in two or three years and I hope to at least dip into it again. I'm definitely more motivated to revisit the Grand Canyon, which I've visited twice but only superficially.Although Amazon calls this "unknown binding," I got a hardback when I ordered from a third-party seller. It would probably be a good idea to check with your seller before ordering. The full title includes a subtitle about "photographs by the author." The later paperback editions do not have photos and they do have updates about development threats to the Grand Canyon and the effects of damming the river. I read a paperback edition first and later bought the old hardback version. I had a hard time visualizing the landscape, and I found it comforting that the photos were reasonably close to what I had envisioned. The hardback has a larger foldout map that is much easier to read than the map in the paperback.

I found this book an interesting read about a fantastic journey by foot. What I did not like was the pains the author took to try and somehow entwine the hike with deep inner thoughts of mans existence. Way too much navel gazing for me. It reeked of similar works popular in the sixties whereby a good story had to be examined in a mind altering way which was likely very trendy in its day but seems over done now.

This is a very interesting tale of a walk through the Grand Canyon in 1963. The perspective is dated in many ways, but much of it is timeless. The hiking challenges were very interesting to me as well as his disruption of the surroundings. He lost me a little in the spiritual talk of being one with the beaver etc., but that was still interesting keeping in mind the perspective.

I discovered Fletcher in 1975 when I worked in a backpacking shop as a high school kid. I read "The New Complete Walker". It was so good that I tracked down "The Man Who Walked Through Time". The book had a huge impact on me.Fletchers writing about his solo travels is unpolluted by ego, fluff or anything else that's worthless. He brings the small but essential experiences into sharp focus with his careful descriptions. A literary critic might have a different view, but as a guy who loves to haul a pack around in lonely and beautiful places, I cant say enough about Fletchers writing.One of the aspects of this book I dearly love, is that its from a time before the big companies infected the culture of backpacking with the neurotic focus on equipment. Today, too many people focus on gear rather than the experience. Reading backpacking magazines like Outdoor...is sickening to me...its nothing but a ad rag. All hype, fashion and status. Fletcher shares what its like to simply go explore wild places on your own - with no consideration of statistics, competition or...obsession with hyped up equipment. Backpacking is a form of travel that should be inexpensive and in reach of nearly everyone...rather than the over-priced, materialistic BS that Outside and other magazines have turned it into.This is a great book - worth the price and time to read it.

One of the best journey and backpacking books of all time. I bought this years ago and it was so good that it changed my wilderness travel life. I just bought another copy so that I can loan it out more.

If you love the outdoors you will love the adventure we wish we could all go on if we were brave enough. C. Fletchers descriptions of what the Grand Canyon revealed to him on his 2 month journey are vivid enough to make you feel you are there with him.

I only wish Colin Fletcher had written more books! This one was excellent.

The book is a solid read - covering the landscape for health related issues and concerns for men - ranging from obesity and heart disease, to prostate, testicular and penile cancer and other critical male health concerns. The book is illustrated occasionally, and the writing style is far more approachable than a medical journal. However, the book also bears the burden of trying to cover a broad set of topics in both a secular and scientific way - and doesn't quite make it for either. Probably a bit too detailed and heavy for the typical reader, and probably getting too dated and too general for the person looking for research on a specific topic. Worth the read, at used values, if you have a strong interest in the topic.

This is an excellent medical reference book for men. The information is very well organized into three separate parts: 1) what makes men different, 2) what makes men healthy, and 3) men's main diseases, how to prevent them, test for them, and treat them. The book is quite long at 470 pages. But, it reads easily. And, it makes for an excellent medical reference to go back to when you want specific scientific information on various men's health topics.The best part about the book is that it is based on extensive medical studies. The advice provided is the result of statistically significant conclusions derived from these studies. Thus, the objectivity, integrity, and intelligence derived from this book is so much greater than from any of the medical authors positioning themselves as the current diet or health care guru.The book confirms the value of EFV. The ultimately healthy lifestyle consists of a lot of Exercise with a diet that includes lots of Fruits and Vegetables. These three factors (exercise, fruits, vegetables) appear to be universal protectors against all age related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Similarly, the high risk factors regardless of the health risk considered seemed to be always the same, including: smoking, obesity, lack of exercise, lots of saturated fats and trans fats in the diet.The book has a ton of information besides the self-evident basics mentioned above. There are lots of tables, graphs, and summaries that make the information easy to retrieve. These include info on BMI, PSA test levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, recommended frequencies of screening tests, recommended dosage and toxic levels of vitamins and minerals, Glycemic index, life expectancy charts, and lots more interesting stuff.With the medical knowledge derived from this book, you will be in a far better position to take care of your health and initiate a mutually productive dialogue with your general practitioners and specialists. The World is getting increasingly complex. Technology and science evolve rapidly. Nowhere does this increasing complexity have a greater impact than on healthcare. This book will help you understand your health, risk factors, relevant testing, and cures to be considered.As we age, we will invariably be faced with some challenging options and decisions. This book is a great road map to help us out along the way. If you are well informed, it takes a lot of anxiety out of the equation. That takes care of a major health risk already [stress and anxiety]. This book is good for you!Along the same line of excellent health related information, I also strongly recommend another great book from Harvard Health Publications: "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy" by Walter C. Excellent book in real-world language. I needed it for a college class (got an A!) and plan to read it cover-to-cover. Well written, valuable information.

I've never written a review of a book based on the quality of its of printing before, but here I am compelled to. It looks it a 1942 first edition was scanned at low resolution and then printed with a clapped-out inkjet. Every letter on every page has a little flaky shadow below it. Weird thing is on the imprint page is says "Manufactured in the USA" - sigh.I suppose it shouldn't stop one from buying the book as it's obviously not going to be read like a novel, but it wasn't cheap so the quality can't be ignored. Shame on Simon & Schuster for putting this in customers' hands.Edition info: I ordered this in October 2010 and it is the edition copyright 2002.

I am young (almost 20), but I still find this book to be incredibly useful and informative. It is a very well written book, Takei takes you through his full and very interesting life, which included being held in an internment camp during WW2. I highly recommend this book to all Star Trek fans.He is an excellent writer and has led a very interesting life.

Mr. Takei's life as described inthis book has been truly interesting and inspiring. I appreciate his humor, candor, and unflinching willingness to call things as he sees them.

I am a huge star trek fan and reading this was worth it. Reading about the internment was very interesting.

(This Review is for the Audio Version of the Book). Mr. Takai does an excellent job of narrating his own autobiography injecting a personal note into the book. He is a clear speaker easy to understand even in the noisiest of (car) environments. The first tape covers George's life "before Star Trek" talking mostly about his life in the "camps" during WWII. I especially found this interesting as I knew little of what this was about. The second tape talks about George's Star Trek life. The people he met and how he felt about them. His take on William Shatner is especially interesting! A very enjoyable set of tapes. 3 hours.

Not bad little book. Best parts are where he explains how egotistical Shatner was to work with. Very quick read.

George Takei, amazingly without bitterness, gives us a first hand account of his family being sent to a war relocation center (translation: concentration camp) and then having to overcome prejudice after WW2: his rise to stardom gave me new respect for a Star Trek icon.

I absolutely fell in love with the first of these books, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit! I feel like I can picture everything in my mind, the author wrote this beautifully!! It’s truly one of my favorite books to read. Originally I had gotten it for daughter but I feel one should never be “too old” to read a book from any age and genre. I read it at her request but I never wanted it to end! The second book I enjoyed as well, it was so interesting! So intriguing the story. The third I enjoyed but not as much, I felt like it lost its innocent luster and had more an awaking of reality appeal. It was very good don’t get me wrong, just different.

Good book, it was interesting and convenient to have all 3 stories in one book. The first story, "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit," is the best written of the 3. I was curious as to the author's further experiences, but didn't feel the last two stories were quite in the same league as the first one.

This was a WONDERFUL reading experience. Each of the three titles were written in the voice of a girl/ young woman of the age at the time of the story, and the story was riveting. Highly recommmended.

I could not put the book down. I would like to read more of her stories.

I bought this for my son but I started reading and am about 1/2 way through it. I have a general working knowledge in a few programming languages so as to not be a novice or beginner, but I am new to C++. I would consider this book to be almost an intermediate type of book. While it does deliver beginner and basic fundamentals it is rather messy in its approach. Some code examples are not clearly defined when showing what the author is attempting to point out. I find I must study the code just to understand the point the author is attempting to show. I feel it could have been much better done to show clearly what was trying to be taught at times. Granted I do find this language quite a bit less friendly than the others I have used, so there may be a bit of a larger learning curve than I am willing to admit to. However I have gone to other sites via Google search and actually learned some of the basic program structure there that should have been included in this book, I feel. I would not discourage anyone from buying this book but just be aware that unless you have a little skill in programming already you may struggle a bit with the not so clear examples.

Laid out exceptionally well. Easy to follow instructions. The only issue I have with this version is the fact that it's a little outdated.

I have spent way too much money on way too many books on C++ in a desperate effort to learn this "mother of all high-level languages", and this has turned out to be the most down-to-earth and user-friendly one yet. Mind you, I'm only about 30 pages in, but everything I've read so far has been the best of the best in terms of writing style and clarity. This is looking to be that book I wish I'd had when I was first trying to learn C++.

An excellent book. Covers some of the history of how C++ evolved from C. Good sample programs showing how various commands are used.

On pg. 6 it references a web link where errata and frequently asked questions can be addressed. I went to the site but did not find the title.I was able to fill out an email form and did alert the writer of this.Now, I seem to not be able to contact anyone to get any assistance as mentioned in the book. There is NO www.stephendavis.com as printedin the book (page 6). This is not a good indication that there is what is printed in the book. Based on that, I would be cautious in recommending the book. Caveat Emptor.I recently ordered "The C++ Programming Language" by Bjarne Stroustrup and hoping I will not need the Dummies book, I am not clearif it is supported or not.

Hard to see and copy the examples (small type) to confirm results. No random number generator information.

I purchased the book after 20 years in the saddle riding equitation and training hunters. I hadn't had a good riding lesson in years... One where I was challenged, received good information, or was told anything I didn't already know. At less than the cost of just one riding lesson, this book is going to put bad instructors out of business left and right!For advanced riders who are ready to train on their own and just want to know what the expert has to say about training and showing this book answers questions you didn't even know you had, and it is filled with photos and diagrams. The section on judging was incredible, after reading it over I'm even thinking about studying some more and experimenting next summer along those lines. Every rider should have a copy of this book! Especially the newly formed "natural horsemanship" crowd, as there is not a speck of cruelty in this book, rather, guidance on forming a better bond with your horse through the logical and kind methods of classical training.

Love the ideas I'm getting. I need simple instruction for me and my OTTB, and this book really helps. I'm not a horse trainer, and I still don't know how to get a horse to move a certain way. The book helps a lot, good diagrams and photos.

I had previously used Anna Jane's book on Judging Hunter Seat Equitation and loved it - this book surpasses that one! The photographs are excellent, descriptive, and complete the narrative. The line drawings are an excellent way to assist students in understanding what we are trying to convey. The explanations of correct execution of the tests are superb. I also coach an interscholastic riding team and testing is required, so I have begun using these explanations to enhance the weekly work. I have recommended this book to other trainers and my riding students and will continue to share it with others.

Anna Jane's updated "Guide to Hunter Seat" builds on her previous two books. Her systematic approach begins with the basics and smoothly transitions through the steps to become a more proficient rider. The judging section is not just for judges, it helps prepare the rider for the ring by exploring performance and skills through the judge's eyes. There are many valuable topics related to solving problems with both the rider and horse. All of this is supported by an array of illustrations and spectacular color images demonstrating the proper movements. This is an excellent guide for riders at any level and provides the tools to successfully train and compete.

Beautiful illustrations really add to the helpful text. Nice explanations for how the horse benefits from techniques that we've all been taught.

Bought this book as a visual to accompany my ongoing equitation lessons. What a wonderful addition to the library. The best part about this book are the pictures and diagrams. It wasn't until I was able to see where and what each limb was supposed to be doing in a diagram that my instructors words finally clicked. Highly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling with coordination of hands, feet, legs, head, eyes, etc.

This books does show you the basics, but it goes much deeper than that, with photos to illustrate along the way. This book is extremely informative, but it isn't difficult to read. Once I had read this, I was excited to go out and try what I learned on my horse. I really like that it had both a training section, and the judging section. I feel like it gave me a full picture on what goals I should be setting.I think a good way to gauge whether you will like this book would be to check out the author's website. She has a few articles she's written on there, so read them and if you like what you see, buy this book!

I received the hardcover books today (prime shipping). I also picked up the problem book. As a basis for comparison, I used the 1966 edition that I also own. I picked up the new set as FLP set are among some of my most favorite physics books and I wanted to own it in a relatively error free version. I read the FLP long ago and now wanted to read it again using the new edition.Here is my assessment of the quality of printing of the new Millennium edition putting is side by side with the 1966 edition.The binding is quite nice and the books are good looking. The pages are not glossy at all but the quality of paper is not great. The print however is not good at all. The letters are 'thin' and rickety and harder to read compared to the original red edition that has nice thick bold black letters printed. They are readable if direct light is shining on them, however, they do cause eye strain and require effort to read. All FLPs (old and new editions) have a lot of room on the right margin and this is nothing new. However, the left margin for the Millennium edition is too close to the spine making it awkward to read. The pictures are however, nicely done and so are the math, the formulas, and the equations. In short, the printing of the Millennium edition does not do justice to the excellent content. My advice for People who are contemplating purchasing the new millennium edition is to skip it and try to acquire one of the older versions in good condition and deal with the errata online. I have not decided yet whether to keep mine or send it back. I love FLP but the printing quality of the Millennium edition does leave a bad taste in mouth. I completed my last Physics class in 1964, and I still go back to these lectures from time to time simply because they're a joy to read.OK, I'll admit I spent 35 years developing system software and I have a life long love of math and science, but I think these lectures are accessible to anyone who wants to actually understand what physics is all about. Dr. Feynman is able to present the concepts in a way that gets past the "here's the formula, memorize it" approach that many introductory presentations have been reduced to. If you persist, you will be rewarded with an understanding of how all those odd sounding bits fit together and at least some idea of how it all works.Taking on these three volumes is a daunting task, but if you truly want to grasp this material, you won't find a shorter or easier path to getting there. You can read all kinds of popularizations relating to the voodoo of quantum mechanics, the time twisting of relativity, and the unfathomability of the smallest and the largest scales of the universe, but if you want to glimpse the reality behind the magic you need to recognize that a lot of very, very smart people have spent the past few hundred years sorting it out. The fact that all this can be made comprehensible to us mere mortals at all is a major accomplishment.

Of course the substantive content is beyond reproach, but it remains a challenging read, regardless of one's educational background.However, if you are reading the Feynman Lectures with Kindle for the iPad, be aware you will be disappointed in the formatting -- when inline mathematical expressions are rendered, these formulas are not properly displayed. Speaking with the editor of the Feynman Lectures, he informs me that Amazon has not updated the Kindle software for the iPad to support the newer mobi standard (or Amazon delivers the old .mobi version to iPads instead of the newer .mobi standard?). He informs me that publishers generally are complaining to Amazon about this problem for some time.

The following comments are general to the entire Feynman Lectures on Physics set : Volumes 1, 2 & 3Prosody, philosophy and physics. Autodidacts and self-starters will be pleased.The layout is well-crafted, the language is timeless (not archaic, despite being written a half-century ago), and the development (exposition) of the content is arranged to accommodate "cover-to-cover" study, intermittent consumption, or to serve as reference. In fact, some Lectures (chapters) point to previous Lectures "for review" - helpful if you want to start from the middle.Though pre-exposure to- (or familiarity with- ) Calculus (particularly integral), Vector analysis, Probability, and other mathematical disciplines, operations/transformations/functions/series (Lorentz, Fourier, Number Theories, etc.) may help "feel out" the proofs more intuitively, each is presented with its corresponding Physical principle, as the need arises.In fact, this reviewer finds the coverage of mathematics (which contains many proofs) to be as lucid and well-reasoned as the Physics content!For putting together a working knowledge of Physics, in the pursuit of other interests, this reviewer continues to be excited by the lessons in these books.No doubt they will be admired by many other audiences, too.Then of course, no thing is for everyone. It gets deep quickly, and may be more thorough than some folks need or want. It's an overview in some sense, but the methodology is intense and takes a LOT OF MATH. Be sure you know what you're buying before you get into it!Happy reads
