Interesting read that examines Catholic teaching as it relates to Bible. It also addressed how the Old Testament is fulfilled in the New Testament. While there are several books on the scriptural roots of Catholic teaching, this one is a very good introductory work because it is more accessible and easier to digest than some of the others.

As a convert to the Catholic faith many years ago, I often found myself questioning the "value" of the Old Testament. Growing up in a small town evangelical church, my experience was very similar to that of Sonja Corbitt - in fact, when I was confirmed in the Protestant church as a young teen, I was presented with a "youth bible" that only included the New Testament and some feeble wording from church elders along the lines of "All you really need now is Jesus and love." It was as if the Old Testament had been handily and summarily buttoned up and dismissed as a few great stories about some important church characters until Jesus arrived on the scene to take the spotlight! Given that context, you can only imagine how amazing and eye-opening a book like "Fulfilled" can be to someone like me. Before this book, I felt like I was walking into the movie theater halfway through the movie and trying to figure out the plot line before it ended. "Fulfilled" fills in the blanks for Catholics and non-Catholics. Every chapter is rich with history, illustrations and scripture that suddenly begins to nudge that missing "plot" right into the place it deserves to be. Sonja Corbitt writes with a clear, entertaining and easy-to-understand style that draws you in and lifts you up. She pulls in her own search for truth and her passionate journey along the way for her conversion to become a Catholic, and she leaves you wanting to turn each page and race along with her on that journey - anxious to find out how it all finally comes together as the fulfillment of the promise in the New Testament. I can't wait to share this book with my family and my friends and will be buying several more copies as gifts to share! After years of wondering how the pieces really "fit together" in the Bible - Sonja Corbitt solves the mystery. Reading "Fulfilled" has truly opened my eyes to the beautiful tapestry that God has woven between these two great books of the bible. Most readers take me as a straightforward writer in search of laughs and truths, and so every reader (fur as I know) has attempted somewhat confusedly to read Whirlaway literally, but Doctor Kelly Daniels, who assigned the novel to two of his writing classes at Augustana College, is the first to recognize the hidden structure, the mirror-entendre, as it were. It’s presumptous to have to explain your own work, so I thought I’d let the Doctor do it for me [spoilers ahead]:“Oh, I believe I built up my "reading" of Whirlaway to a degree I'll never be able to fulfill. Basically, here's how I interpret the story. Eddie Plum, Jangler, and Sofia are inventions of the author of the book, Whirlaway, a self-help murder novel being written in a maximum security forensic hospital. The dog is also an invention, along with the Island and its residents and the sexy racetrack woman whose name I forget. Shelly is the inmate and the author. He invented Eddie as a more attractive first-person stand in. Shelly's story is essentially true, the abuse, serial-killer love, the brother, and, sadly, the murdered TJ women. He is locked up for multiple murders. The book is about healing, and the act of it is an act of healing. The crucial moment comes when Shelly, in the guise of Plum, revisits the sites and instances of his murders, but in his re-imagining, he does not kill them. No, he sees them as real humans, and just lets them go. In this way, it's a happy ending, even though Shelly will never get out. He will, perhaps, manage to get transferred to an easier place to do his time, and that's about as much as we can hope for… I wonder if an explicit comparison to Fight Club might attract a new audience, or at least give readers a hint about how to read it.”

Poe Ballantine has a gift for making the reader care about his characters—people that we may never have the opportunity to know— flawed characters, yet by learning about them through Eddie Plum’s perspective, the reader can appreciate the depth of his subject and the people in his life. I found myself caring about Eddie in a way that would not have been possible if I read about him in a newspaper article. The same holds true for the other characters like Shelly, Donny, Sophia, Sweets, and even Dr. Jangler. That is because Poe Ballantine is a brilliant writer— one with empathy, humor, and the ability to tell a story jumping right into the hard stuff. He is not shy about showing the characters’ vulnerabilities while at the same time having the writer’s gift of creating intriguing sentences and story lines. This is illustrated in the way his chapter titles correlate with the story that unfolds in each chapter. Bravo Mr. Ballantine — can’t wait for your next book.

Man in a mental hospital for the criminally insane, gets out on a flier, and while on the lamb, he begins to dig deeply into the past of his old friend Shelley Hubbard, who he suspects is a serial killer. At this point the novel dives into Southern California Gothic; locations, dates, freeway off ramps, punk rock bars, (but not the music). The usual signifiers, and free from his drug induced haze, Eddie Plum's perceptions begin to heighten. Some premises from the narrative are left, and other, new ones added. Reality is suspended, our perceptions are not reality, after all, and the artists truism, “I paint what I see”, doesn't explain Picasso. There is no introspection here, a private eye focused on a cubist painting.If the vision is primal we still need to delineate our experience in time and space. Don't worry there is nothing here you don't already know. For instance we know that some people are vicious, cruel, and manipulative, and that others suffer for their short handed treatment. Shelly is a victim, a guy who collects records, but who doesn't really like the music, a sort of Spike Jones of vintage record dealers; selling odd one offs and groups that translate through the cultural trade warp between America and everywhere else. He keeps his crazy brother in the basement, albeit most homes in CA are built on a slab. Lives are ruined, love never comes to fruition, and not even a small portion of our human potential ever grows into anything meaningful. And that's okay...Author does a superb job of painting characters with a few simple brush strokes and capturing the state of mind of a place, like the Island. While Plum's percepts shine, they are neither PopArt, nor OpArt, but maybe GothArt, and the intellectual depth charges keep roiling the surface. There are pop music references, too many maybe. The ending just opens the story up, and there are more stories and you want to hear some of them. That would be the hope.

Poe Ballentine is one of the best nonfiction, essay writers alive and perhaps of recent times, along with EB White. However, his past novels have been sometimes too long, uninspiring and without much point. With Whirlaway, Ballentine has played to his strengths and produced a brilliantly written book. In this story, he sticks with the first person that has served him so well in his nonfiction - in the excellent style of Charles Bukowski. The characters are original and the plot buzzes along at a good pace. The writing is tight, beautiful and funny - it is such a pleasure to read an author hitting his full creative stride. An example on page 54: "So I made a quick prayer to the Mexican God who is more forgiving than the American One and went to find my truck. Maybe when I get back on my feet I would become a better man."

I have never given a book a bad review before and have always hated reading negative reviews with nonconstructive criticism. That being said it will be hard to be positive about this one as I feel like I have been taken. I am one of those guys that when I get into a hobby I read every book I can and although much of the reading is redundant I always learn something new. I did not learn anything from this book it is hands down the worse book purchase ever. With all the pointless pictures it took me about 45 minutes to read.This book does not give you the information you need to make jerky, the author goes on about selecting knives and butchering animals things you don't need to really know which would be fine but he seems to stop half way every process leaving you without the understanding.This book is filled with pictures one or two on every page. The problem is over half are pictures measuring the ingredients and piles of meat without any illustration that actually teaches you anything. I think one picture of using a measuring cup or showing what a pile of meat looks like would suffice but there are an average of about 1.5 per page. If I wanted to see a picture of a Bradley smoker I could see it on their website and I am not sure why they would not talk about different smokers on the market. The author uses a full page to show you what the outside of a Bradley looks like and does not show you how to use a smoker or load the jerky etc. This is kind of like a kids picture book and the information could have easily be fit into a 5 page pamphlet without the pictures, they are clearly used to up the page count not to teach you how to make jerky. There are web pages with better information you can print out.Again I hate to be negative but this guy took my ten dollars and I can find no redeeming qualities to this incomplete and scattered picture book, it is anything but complete.

I'm so glad I added this book to my essential oils library. When I read that it was recommended by Robert Tisserand, I knew it would be a good one. Be aware that it is small in size....but really packed with information. As you can see in my photo, it is the size of my hand, but it's about an inch thick, so chunky. :)The author starts off with some basic information: what are essential oils; what oils can do; how are they produced; some good safety information; safety for pregnancy, babies, and children; some scientific information about how oils work in the body, and how to blend. She discusses carrier oils; how to make a mousse; how to give a massage; how to use oils in the bath, in inhalers, and in a compress.She then discusses 88 different essential oils. Each one has info how they can support the spirit, how they can ease the mind, and on how they can heal the body. Safety info on each oil. Then she includes 2 recipes to use each oil. (Each recipe includes only oils she discusses in the book...so you actually get more than 2 recipes that use each oil....they just may be on another page with a different oil....but can be located in the index). She uses low, safe dilutions.The oils are categorized by "Muscle Treats", "Skin Enhancers", "Easy Breathers", "Warming Stimulants", "Immune Boosters", "Hormone Harmonizers", "Nerve Relievers", "Digestive Soothers", and "Uplifting Aromas". So you can look up specific oils in the index, or you can just go to the section you need help with and browse the oils in that area.I might not recommend it for your very first book (I might recommend The Complete Aromatherapy and Essential Oils Handbook for Everyday Wellness by Purchon and Cantele for a first book), but I am very glad to have this on my bookshelf. This is a real review. I didn't get anything for it. I just really liked the book. :)

This is a beautiful, well-researched book. (Although it has 288 pages, it is small in size, so don't be alarmed when you get the package.) The book is divided into two parts:Part One: The Power of Essential Oils -- covers what they are and how they're produced, safe usage of them, basics on how to blend them, and how to use them (including massage, baths, inhalations, vaporizers, compresses). Part One takes up about 1/4 of the book.Part Two: A Guide to the Oils -- this section covers each oil in a little more detail. The oils are not arranged alphabetically as you'd expect, but are sorted into categories such as Muscle Treats (those best for muscles), Skin Enhancers (best for your skin), Easy Breathers, Warming Stimulants...ending with Uplifting Aromas. Each of these categories contains the profiles of 5 to 13 essential oils. For instance, the Warming Stimulants section contains info on these oils: cinnamon leaf, West Indian bay, cubeb seed, black pepper, and clove bud. Part Two takes up most of the book.Then on each oil profile page, there are these small sections:1) a summary of how the oil is extracted, where it is produced, and notes about the scent2) Safety First -- any safety concerns for that oil3) Supporting the Spirit -- "this oil encourages creativity" or "this oil renews energy levels"4) Easing the Mind -- "to calm irritability, use 4 drops of this oil in a warm bath"5) Healing the Body -- "to clear sinusitis, try an inhalation of 2 drops laurel and 2 drops lemon"This book easily gets five stars for being an excellent resource for those new to working with essential oils. However, if you have years of experience working with essential oils and already create your own healing blends, I don't think this is the book for you. It's beautifully laid out, has a table of contents and an index so you can find what you're looking for -- it just doesn't offer any new/detailed information. One thing I would have liked to have seen is a list of therapeutic properties for the oils (e.g., lavender has analgesic, antidepressant, antiseptic, and antiviral properties).I LOVE her Skin Mousse recipe in this book! It's perfect for sensitive skin.

What a handy resource to have! First of all, the size is small, but it's a well made small book. The pages are heavy weight & the cover is laminated. The font size is small, too, but it did not effect my ability to read it. I do have to wear readers to read anything these days as it stands! There are lots of photo images which I love! The page layouts are very attractive. You do have to open the book very wide in order to fully read everything. I am afraid that over continued use, this could effect the spine and the gluing. I did take a picture of the inside of the book so it can be seen. The information in the book is wonderful! There's an index which is very useful, too. There is also a Table of Contents so you can easily find the Essential Oil that you are looking for directly. The sections are color coded. If you are looking for information on using Essential Oils to help with breathing, then you go to the section called Easy Breathers. Then within that section, each 2 page layout is about a different Essential Oil and how to use it to help with breathing. Within each section, they are not in alphabetical order, which if they were, it might be more helpful. For each oil, there is safety information, recipes for blends using that oil, basic information on the plant it is derived from, and how to use it for spirit, mind, & body uses. I consider myself a beginner with Essential Oils and I find this guide book to be very thorough and helpful!
