From Publishers Weekly

In the current intellectual climate, where "political correctness" occupies an exalted position, the title of this stylish picture book could be considered a misnomer. For the featured art is hardly amateurish; it actually encompasses pre-Columbian examples from Mexico and Native America, as well as art from Papua New Guinea, West Africa, Indonesia and India. However, Barnard's ( Living with Kilims ) attitude, while a tad ingenuous, is filled with awe, and his enthusiasm for the subject is obvious. With Merrell he introduces the reader to a broad spectrum of work through a panoply of interior shots, each revealing how a homeowner has incorporated his or her collection of Moroccan rugs, Indonesian baskets, Veracruz figures and more into a domestic environment. To complement the photographs, Barnard provides relevant background information ranging from facts about floor rugs to the significance of regional sources. A charming and colorful Baedeker, this book serves as an intriguing introduction to a category of collecting just now gaining the recognition it so deserves. A classic book that is as good today as when it was published.

I’ve got to say it: This book speaks to me! It describes and showcases how we and many other people live – by mixing in different ‘Ethnic Styles from around the World’, the subtitle of this book.As more people travel and live abroad, they will acquire interesting treasures to curate in their homes or with ‘wish-they-had souvenirs’, from stores in the US, for those that are armchair travelers. In fact, I see some of the same objects in this book that we have in our home: many of the items in this book resemble ours, which are a mixture of items from Asia, the Middle East, and other places that resemble them (pages 20-21); a Chinese herb chest and an intricate, heavily-embroidered rug as a wall hanging (pages 24-25); an ikat cloth from Indonesia (pages 9, 38, 94); pottery from Bahrain (page 44); basketry from Bahrain (page 47); kilims from Iran (pages 51, 85); metalcraft from Kuwait (page 90); wooden carvings from Bali (page 93); furniture from India (page 101); molas from Panama (page 118); a metal-clad chest on covered wheels from Rajasthan (page 130); and colorful, embroidered Iraqi rugs (page 162).On the front dust cover flap, the book states that: “Folk art…adds an originality, a feeling of the hand-made, and a beguiling simplicity to the atmosphere of almost any living space.” To me, folk art is the collection of artifacts of places in which I have lived and travelled (which I find photographed in this book in different homes in different countries), and then I have re-curated them back in our home in the US.This book “explores all the decorative media of folk art – ceramics, masks, basketware, carvings, and textiles. It contains 253 illustrations, including 187 in color.”Note: If we hadn’t travelled and lived abroad, I still would have gravitated toward these types of items, bought them slowly here when I found them, and then placed them around our home. The US cookie-cutter, ‘Rooms to Go’ format would never be part of furnishing our home. The Introduction states that this book “celebrates an appreciation for the creative expression and talent of the men and women of the lands more often referred to as ‘less developed’, and its limits are not too rigidly circumscribed by the murky areas that surround the semantics of the titles ‘folk’, ‘tribal’, or ‘primitive’….In an age dominated by technology and an ever-accelerating pace of life, these sometimes imperfect and naïve arts provide a feast of creativity, a fount of inspiration and an escape into a world where reason and order are not always the benchmarks of expression. Within this book can be found a rich and colourful introduction to the arts of the world past and present, that is influencing yet again a whole new generation of travelers, collectors, artists, and designers.”Take time to page through this hard-cover 1991 book with 192 semi-glossy pages, all of which contain at least one color photo that is expertly staged. And be ready to say AHHHH!The author is Nicholas Barnard and the photographer is James Merrell. The book is published by Bullfinch Press/ Little, Brown and Company, Boston. This book has 6 Chapters. This book should be on the personal library shelves of all people who want to collect and curate their own interesting folk art collections in their homes.
