The Goodbye Book, by Todd Parr

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—This picture book shows young children that even when goodbyes bring sadness and unfamiliar emotions, those feelings will ease with the help of time, remembrance, and support. The Goodbye Book addresses the range of emotions someone might feel after a loss, including anger, sadness, lack of joy, and denial, as well as the desire to stop eating or sleeping. Parr explains that even when a person starts to feel better, there could be moments of grief or confusion, but at the end of the day, another person will always be available to provide love and comfort. The colorful illustrations, in an naive, childlike style and outlined in black, feature a goldfish that experiences the emotions discussed throughout the book. Young readers can infer what the goldfish is feeling by looking at the picture, and the imaginative representation gives the book a soothing tone. The Goodbye Book never specifies what the exact scenario is, making it an appropriate choice whether a child is dealing with death or another difficult situation. VERDICT An honest but gentle look at the grief that comes with saying goodbye. An essential purchase for all early childhood collections.—Liz Anderson, D.C. Public Library

Review

Eliot Schrefer, Special for USA TODAY November 29, 2015The Goodbye BookWritten and illustrated by Todd ParrLittle, Brown Books for Young Readers, 32 pp., ages 3-6***½ out of four starsTodd Parr, author of It's Okay to Be Different, has carved out a niche for himself as "the feelings man" of picture books, and it's not hard to see why. In glossy, color-saturated pages, we're introduced to a small fish who's lost its companion. As the fish goes through many reactions to the loss, the text is directed straight at the reader, giving permission for all sorts of feelings: "You might be very sad. / You might be very mad." The art is simple and naïve, as though Parr loaded up Paint on his computer and started clicking away. With its accessible style and kindhearted text, The Goodbye Book will serve kids as a sympathetic friend during trying times.Kansas CITY Star: Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein...Well I've found another to add to the list: Todd Parr.

This was great for exploring feelings arising from the loss of a pet for our 3.5 year old. Very simple sentences for little ones to understand. It doesn't mention what happens to your loved one or where they go, so it is great regardless of individual family beliefs.

Such a wonderful book on a really hard topic. This book was perfect for putting into words everything we wanted to talk to our kids about when our family experienced a huge loss. And, it didn't get super heavy or dark to add to the confusion or sadness that the kids were already feeling, like some other picture books dealing with grief might do. I think it even helps grown-ups feel a little better. I'd really recommend this book.

Illustrations were very cute. The background colors on each page were different and distracting/bright. The words were geared towards children about 6+.I did not care for the "be brave", "move on", and "remember the happy times" dismissive attitude that is so unfortunately common when it comes to grief and even more so when it comes to children's grief. Some pages were great and then those pages basically telling a kid to be happy, wrecked it for me.I have a lot of experience with grief and the grieving of all ages. When it comes to grief, also the importance of healthy grief and teaching children how to grieve, we need to let them know that it's perfectly ok and healthy to feel and express all of their feelings, not just tell them to remember the good times when they feel sad and move on.

If you have had someone leave your life this book might make grownups cry. My toddlers liked reading this book after a death in our family. Helpful book and good stepping point to talk about different ways to grieve. Made me love Todd Parr even more. I would buy this for others for sure.

This is an exceptional book for any young child or child with social/emotional/cognitive delays, who is dealing with loss. In our case it was a family member. What I like about this book most, is that it addresses more than simply sadness, but also anger and other emotions, that are typically felt with a loss that so many books for kids do not. Also, it is told via the perspective of a lonely fish. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Our Au Pair moved back home and our great-grandmother passed away during the same time. Its a simple story that allowed my children to better understand how to express their feelings, i have 3yr old twins and they love this book.

Wonderful book on explaining loss to small children. I have a four year old who loves to read this book and all of the Todd Parr books. Wonderful material for goodnight stories, not scary or confusing at all! I am a psychologist, and I recommend this to all therapists and parents!

I'm a child therapist. A good book on goodbye is a must. I love Todd parr series. They're simple, colorful, and insightful.
