From the Back Cover

The VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) World Demands Change-Agile Businesses Turbulent environments demand constant change, but the mindset, skills, and behaviors taught to business leaders are unhelpful and sometimes flatly misleading. What is more, many high-profile approaches to change do not help: they are based on untested belief systems, unreliable methods, and psychological myth. The Science of Organizational Chang e identifies dozens of myths, bad models, and unhelpful metaphors, replacing some with twenty-first century research and revealing gaps where research needs to be done. Paul Gibbons links the origins of theories about change to the history of ideas and suggests that the human sciences will provide real breakthroughs in our understanding of people in the twenty-first century. For example, change fundamentally entails risk, yet little is written for business people about how breakthroughs in the psychology of risk can help change leaders. Change fundamentally involves changing people’s minds, yet the most recent research shows that provision of facts may strengthen resistance. Gibbons’ explorations of the frontiers of twenty-first century behavioral science will help you build influence, improve communication, optimize decision making, and sustain change. In complex organizations and systems, there are no silver bullets. But you can shift away from techniques that are harmful or that science says do not work and toward techniques supported by solid evidence. Leading people through change: Tactics from 21st century human sciences Getting beyond flawed “pop psychology”–and failed “pop leadership” New ways to change behavior–without coercion (carrots and sticks) Preserving dignity and autonomy, avoiding coercion or paternalism–and succeeding A new science of changing hearts and minds Reconceiving resistance, handling social complexity, using facts, and leveraging metacognition Leading with science: The emergence of evidence-based management From “anti-scientific” management to experiment, hypothesis testing, and analytics RETHINK EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT CHANGE Discard metaphors such as “carrots and sticks,” “burning platforms,” the “soft side” of business, and “resistance,” all of which destroy effectiveness Think about the risk, the true costs, and the results of change programs in a completely new way Turn new insights from mindfulness, behavioral economics, complexity theory, and analytics into practical tools Discard pseudoscience, and pop psychology as guides for how people in business behave Make the shift towards greater accountability, scientific validity, and measurement Replace change management with change agility and change leadership To make change work, you need to base it on science, not intuition or myth. In this book, Paul Gibbons offers the first blueprint for change that integrates recent advances in neuroscience, mindfulness, behavioral economics, sociology, complexity theory, and analytics. Rigorously grounded in evidence, this multi-disciplinary approach fully reflects the realities of change in today’s complex organizations. Gibbons offers actionable guidance for every facet of your change initiative–from strategy and planning, through the tactics of changing hearts minds and behaviors, to creating change-agile organizations. You’ll gain a more mature understanding of how people and systems change. And you’ll learn to apply these insights–increasing resilience, agility, and innovation throughout your organization.

There are certain books that make you crave more, this is one of those. I have the kindle edition and I have 50+ notes and bookmarks and are in my third reading in certain chapters. This is a book for our complex world and at the same time it is another voice joining an already strong choir advocating a more humanistic & evidence based management. There are so many books about management and business that has a basis on pseudo science and actually lead people to adapt approaches that are actually harmful. This book is NOT one of them. Reading this will help you put a lot of things together to an systemic overview. This book actually addresses more than just organizational change - in my mind it is a little bit of shy of the mark, granted we could look at it more philosophically and say to live is to change but the point is that this book is so much more than just about change.

Dr Paul delivers change tactics, science based, that allows for implementing transformation in the real world. Tools up to date that enable the change agile sustainable organizattion through its holistic systemic change model which, properly interpreted and put in placed, drives strategic coherence. From change planing, risk management and change execution. Throughout the book you learn to lead change with science. Have a room on your bookshelf, lifetime, for this potential classic on change.

Paul Gibbons has made a valuable contribution to the store of knowledge on change strategy and strategic decision making. He deftly deals with the major issues facing the senior executive team today such as corporate agility, governance and risk, complexity, ambiguous environments and the new demands on leadership for the 21st century. By applying the latest findings from the science of decision making to his 25 years of practical in-the-trenches experience counseling executive teams, Gibbons has enabled anyone engaged in strategic decision making to raise their game.

Paul Gibbons has written the single most insightful book on organizational change. Flip directly to page 20 to find success rates of different types of change, which sets the tone for the this entire body of work. Inside, you'll find evidence-based ideas that leverage what we know about behavioral science and human biases to change behavior and move organizations forward. You'll laugh at the myth-busting and consultant-bashing while taking copious notes on everything else. The chapter on Governance and the Psychology of Risk is truly groundbreaking.

I recommend this book to anyone in management or consulting who deals with organization change, whether at a small or large scale. You will find a new perspective on, and a considerable amount of debunking of, old change "chestnuts." You will also find new and useful insights about the application of science and data to organization change and management. The book already has given me some useful ideas for a project I am working on for a new client.

When I purchased this book I was looking for advice on how to begin and lead change within an organization. Honestly, I expected another repetitious look at management theory. However what I actually got was so much more than what I had hoped for.The Science of Successful Organizational Change delivers on what the title promises; pulling from scientific perspectives to give a much wider view of what causes change within organizations to both succeed and fail. It also takes a very honest look at what success and failure really look like as well as what the costs of both are. While Gibbons pulls from several scientific disciplines by far the most intriguing part of the book for me was the portion where Gibbons forces his readers to take a very hard look at the psychology of risk and risk behaviors. He requires his readers to ask themselves if they are “doubling down” on a losing business scenario or displaying other destructive tendencies when it comes to risk. He walks his readers through what those behaviors are and offers easy to understand examples of what they look like in the real world. After finishing the book I felt better informed and more empowered because I was more self-aware of my own tendencies, both positive and negative, and felt as if Gibbons had given me a road map to successfully change myself so that I could bring more to the constantly fluctuating business landscape.

This is a book that exactly explains how to make your organisation change-able; how to deal with complexity, uncertainty and everything else that managers are afraid of when it comes to strategic decision making; how to create hunger for learning and adventure. I recommend this book to my fellow management consultants and executives.
